Restreamer vs OBS for Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube

OBS loops a local file with Media Source; Restream Upload & Stream offers hosted scheduled playback with limits. Learn how datarhei Restreamer differs and which workflow fits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a local, prerecorded video you want to loop through a computer you control, OBS is the most direct option: add the file as a Media Source and turn on Loop. If you want a hosted service to schedule and play a prerecorded event while your computer is off, Restream’s Upload & Stream is the closer fit, but it is a paid feature with limits. “Restreamer” can also mean datarhei Restreamer, a separate self-hosted product whose cited YouTube guide explains how to publish a stream but does not document looping.

First, distinguish Restream from Restreamer

OBS Studio is local streaming software: your computer plays the video and runs the encoder that sends the stream to YouTube. Restream’s Upload & Stream is a hosted prerecorded-event service with upload and scheduling features. datarhei Restreamer is a separate, self-hosted streaming-server product. The similar names do not mean the products have the same workflow or capabilities.

Option Where playback and streaming run What the cited documentation says about looping Best fit
OBS Studio Your computer runs the video source and encoder. Media Source can repeat a file; Loop is off by default. VLC Video is a separate source for playlists and has a Loop Playlist setting. Local playback, scene control, and a workflow where you can keep the computer and network running.
datarhei Restreamer A self-hosted streaming server publishes to YouTube. The cited YouTube setup guide does not describe a loop control. That omission does not establish that looping is impossible. A self-hosted publication workflow, after confirming that the current product supports your required source and playback behavior.
Restream Upload & Stream Restream hosts prerecorded playback and scheduling. The paid feature can loop a video up to 10 times, with a maximum resulting stream duration of 40 hours. Playlists do not automatically loop; the documented workaround is to duplicate entries, up to 40 videos. Hosted, scheduled prerecorded events when you do not want to run a local encoder computer.

Restream’s loop limits come from its help article dated March 11, 2026; its Upload & Stream overview is dated July 25, 2026. Plan eligibility, limits, and storage can change, so check the current service details before building a workflow around them: Restream’s loop instructions and Upload & Stream overview.

Choose based on who must keep the stream running

  • Choose OBS if the file is on your computer, you want to control the scene locally, and you can leave the computer, encoder, and internet connection operating for the stream.
  • Consider Restream Upload & Stream if you want to upload and schedule a prerecorded event for hosted playback, and its current plan and loop limits suit the event.
  • Consider datarhei Restreamer if you specifically want a self-hosted streaming server. Its cited YouTube guide is not evidence of a looping feature; verify the current source and playback controls before relying on it.

There is no cited independent performance study establishing which of OBS and datarhei Restreamer is faster, more reliable, or cheaper for this use case. The practical distinction established here is the workflow: local encoding in OBS, hosted prerecorded events in Restream, and self-hosted publication in datarhei Restreamer.

Loop a prerecorded file with OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that should contain the prerecorded video and any other elements you want on screen.
  2. Add the video. In the scene’s Sources, select the add control, choose Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the local video file.
  3. Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS documents this setting as off by default, so the file otherwise stops at its end. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  4. For a playlist, use the distinct VLC source. OBS’s VLC Video source is separate from Media Source, requires VLC to be installed, and has its own Loop Playlist setting. Add the playlist there rather than assuming the single-file Media Source setting controls a playlist.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder setup. Keep the stream key private. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this setup.
  6. Preview, then start streaming. Check the Live Control Room preview to confirm the right scene and video are reaching YouTube, then start the stream from OBS. Monitor both playback and the connection during the event.

OBS lists supported Media Source formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. That list is not a guarantee that every file will play correctly on every machine; test the exact file and setup before relying on it for a long event.

What datarhei Restreamer’s YouTube guide covers

The cited datarhei Restreamer YouTube guide describes selecting Publication Service, choosing a publication service, entering a valid YouTube streaming ID, saving, and starting the stream. It says a connected YouTube Live bitrate appears in the Restreamer window. The guide was last updated approximately in 2023, so treat it as a dated workflow reference and check current product documentation for present-day controls.

The guide advises ending the stream on YouTube first after an event: interrupting it in Restreamer may prevent YouTube from saving the live stream to its DVR archive. It does not document a looping control. If looping is a requirement, confirm that behavior in current datarhei documentation or with the product before scheduling a stream.

What Restream Upload & Stream can loop

Restream describes uploading a video or using a recording, then scheduling it as a prerecorded event. Its service can play while you are away from your computer. The paid looping feature applies to a video: it permits up to 10 plays and limits the resulting stream to 40 hours, according to Restream’s March 11, 2026 help article.

Do not assume a playlist repeats indefinitely. Restream says playlists do not currently loop automatically; its documented workaround is to duplicate videos in the playlist, up to 40 entries. Check current plan eligibility, storage, and limits in Restream before uploading or scheduling an event.

YouTube access, connection, and content checks

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says first-time livestream access may take up to 24 hours to enable. A channel must be verified and must not have livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. These are YouTube conditions, not features or guarantees of OBS, datarhei Restreamer, or Restream. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

Leave network capacity and monitor the event

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is platform guidance, not a benchmark for either product. YouTube also warns that network disruption can break a stream, and recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring it. Use a stable connection; if you can connect the streaming computer by Ethernet, a wired connection is an option, but the cited guidance does not prescribe a cable category. More details are in YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check rights and monetization separately

Looping a video does not by itself establish whether a channel can monetize it. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and says highly repetitive or mass-produced content with little creative, educational, or other value may be ineligible. Copyright and permission to use the video are separate questions: make sure you have the rights needed for the footage, music, and other material. A loop is not automatically prohibited or automatically monetizable. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an event lasting 12 hours or more will be archived the same way; check YouTube’s current encoder and archiving guidance.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The OBS video stops at the end. Media Source’s Loop setting is off; OBS documents Off as the default. Open the source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, check the VLC Video source’s separate Loop Playlist setting.
VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source options. VLC is not installed. Install VLC, then check the source options again. VLC is required for this OBS source.
YouTube does not show the expected stream. The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, or the stream may not be active. Check the URL and key against the selected YouTube stream in Live Control Room; preview before starting the event. Keep the key private.
The stream disconnects or playback becomes unstable. Network disruption or insufficient upload capacity can interrupt delivery. Test and monitor the connection, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. A wired connection may help where available, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
A Restream playlist does not repeat. Restream says playlist looping is not automatic. Use the documented workaround of duplicating entries, up to 40 videos, or choose a different playback method. Confirm current limits first.
A YouTube archive is missing after a datarhei Restreamer event. The cited guide warns that interrupting the stream in Restreamer may prevent YouTube from saving the live stream to DVR. For the workflow in that guide, end the stream on YouTube first. The guide is dated, so verify current behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
