Restreamer SRT vs. RTMP: Which Should You Use for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Use RTMP or RTMPS for Restreamer’s YouTube-facing connection; SRT may fit a separate source-to-Restreamer leg, but do not assume YouTube accepts it directly.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the connection that sends your stream to YouTube, use RTMP or RTMPS—prefer RTMPS when the current YouTube stream settings and your Restreamer version support it. YouTube’s encoder guidance documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest, while the reviewed guidance does not document SRT as a general YouTube ingest protocol. Restreamer’s lower stated SRT publication latency describes its own publication path; it does not establish that YouTube receives SRT directly.

SRT can still be useful on a separate leg, such as from an SRT-capable source into Restreamer. The key is to choose a protocol for each part of the chain, rather than assuming that selecting SRT anywhere means the final YouTube connection uses SRT.

Which protocol should carry the stream into YouTube?

Configure Restreamer’s YouTube-facing Publication Service with the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow the protocol and destination details displayed for that stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection with TLS/SSL. The reviewed YouTube and Restreamer documentation does not establish that the current YouTube Publication Service sends SRT directly to YouTube; unless your current installations explicitly offer and document that option, use RTMP/RTMPS for the final hop.

What SRT and RTMP mean in a Restreamer workflow

Think of a 24/7 setup as a chain: a source sends video to Restreamer, then Restreamer publishes it to YouTube. The protocols on those two legs need not be the same.

  • SRT: A possible choice for an SRT-capable source-to-Restreamer leg, or for a destination that accepts SRT. Restreamer documents its SRT listener over UDP, with default port 6000. Optional token and passphrase settings are available.
  • RTMP/RTMPS: The documented YouTube-facing choice. RTMPS is RTMP protected with TLS/SSL; use it when YouTube provides an RTMPS destination and the Restreamer version in use supports it.

Do not substitute Restreamer’s internal listening ports for the destination URL and key supplied by YouTube. Restreamer documents default internal ports of 1935 for RTMP and 1936 for RTMPS; YouTube’s actual outbound destination details come from Live Control Room and may differ.

How the options compare

Question SRT RTMP/RTMPS
Documented YouTube ingest The reviewed YouTube encoder guidance does not document SRT as a general ingest protocol. Do not assume direct support. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encryption. YouTube encoder settings
Restreamer’s stated publication latency Under one second, according to Restreamer’s documentation; this is not a guaranteed end-to-end YouTube result. Restreamer publication services 1–2 seconds, according to Restreamer’s documentation; this is not a guaranteed end-to-end YouTube result. Restreamer publication services
Restreamer server setup UDP; default port 6000. Docker must map the port as UDP. Optional token and passphrase. Restreamer SRT documentation Default internal ports: 1935 for RTMP and 1936 for RTMPS; optional token. These are Restreamer defaults, not a replacement for YouTube’s destination details. Restreamer RTMP documentation
Encryption Restreamer offers an optional passphrase setting for SRT. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube encoder settings
Best fit in this workflow Use where the source or receiving destination supports SRT and that leg benefits from it. Use for the YouTube-facing connection when offered by the current stream configuration; prefer RTMPS when supported.

Set up Restreamer to publish to YouTube

  1. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Retrieve the stream URL and key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the address and credential that let an encoder send its feed. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. YouTube live streaming setup
  2. Add a YouTube Publication Service in Restreamer. Enter the destination details from YouTube, save the valid streaming ID/key, and start the publication using the steps for your current Restreamer version. Restreamer YouTube publication guide
  3. Choose the protocol YouTube provides. Prefer the RTMPS URL when it is available and supported. If the encoder reports a connection error, check that the destination uses the intended rtmps URL and verify the server URL and port against YouTube’s current settings. YouTube encoder settings
  4. If your source feeds Restreamer over SRT, configure that leg separately. Expose the SRT listener over UDP; Restreamer’s documented default is port 6000. In Docker, map it as UDP, not TCP. Configure an optional token or passphrase if appropriate for your setup. Restreamer SRT documentation Restreamer Quick Start
  5. Set a resolution and bitrate that fit your output and connection. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265. For 1080p at 60 fps, the recommendations are 6 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular source, network, or encoder will perform reliably. YouTube encoder settings
  6. Leave upload headroom and test the real outbound connection. YouTube recommends 20% headroom. If you use primary and backup encoders, include the combined upload needs of both streams as well as that headroom. Test with similar audio and motion to the intended program, then monitor stream health. YouTube encoder settings YouTube network tips
  7. Plan for failures rather than assuming a protocol prevents them. Restreamer documents process reconnect controls and its Quick Start shows Docker restart behavior. These can aid recovery, but they do not prove end-to-end uptime: the source, host, power, internet connection, or YouTube ingest may fail. Test backup-encoder failover where applicable and monitor the stream. Restreamer processing documentation Restreamer Quick Start YouTube network tips

Can YouTube keep a 24/7 stream as an archive?

Do not rely on one continuous YouTube live event as a complete, indefinite archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full program matters, record locally or plan managed event intervals, then confirm archive behavior for your actual configuration. YouTube live stream archive guidance

Common connection and reliability problems

  • YouTube does not connect when Restreamer is set to SRT: The YouTube-facing protocol may not match the documented ingest options. Use the destination URL and key from Live Control Room and select the offered RTMP/RTMPS path unless current versions explicitly document another option.
  • An RTMPS connection fails: Verify the exact URL and port shown for the YouTube stream, confirm the address uses rtmps when RTMPS is selected, and check that the Restreamer version supports the chosen destination protocol. Do not replace YouTube’s destination port with Restreamer’s internal default.
  • An SRT source cannot reach Restreamer: Check that UDP is permitted through the host firewall and any network rules, that port 6000 or your configured SRT port is exposed, and that Docker maps the port with /udp. Confirm optional token and passphrase values match at both ends.
  • The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check actual upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, test the intended bitrate and motion, and monitor stream health. Reconnect settings help with some process interruptions but cannot fix every source, host, network, or ingest failure.
  • The live broadcast is missing from the archive: If the event ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured. Keep a local recording when a complete copy is important.
