Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: Streamlabs is the more direct fit when you want to produce and encode a broadcast on your own device and send it to YouTube. Restream is a cloud routing service that can receive an encoder feed and forward it to YouTube and other connected destinations; it also advertises prerecorded-video streaming on eligible plans. They can be used together, but neither source establishes guaranteed, uninterrupted 24/7 operation. The right choice depends on whether your channel is genuinely live or playing prerecorded video, where the stream should run, and how many destinations you need.
What “always-on” means changes the answer
Before choosing a service, decide what your stream actually needs to keep doing. A live camera, a computer-generated scene or data feed, and a loop of uploaded video are different workloads. A local broadcast workflow needs a device and connection to keep producing and sending the stream; a cloud workflow can move some of that work off your computer.

- Live source or locally produced show: Streamlabs can provide a creator interface and software-encoder workflow on a supported device. Restream can sit between an encoder and YouTube if you want cloud distribution or multiple destinations.
- Prerecorded loop: Restream advertises prerecorded-video streaming for continuous channels, with access and limits tied to plan. The Streamlabs product page reviewed for this comparison does not substantiate an equivalent always-on prerecorded-loop feature.
- Only YouTube, with no local computer left running: Neither a local Streamlabs desktop workflow nor simply routing an encoder feed through Restream should be treated as proof that your stream will keep running after its source stops. For uploaded-video looping hosted in the cloud, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
How the workflows compare
| Question | Streamlabs-centered workflow | Restream-centered or combined workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Provides software and creator workflows for producing or encoding a broadcast. Streamlabs lists Desktop, OBS plugin, Mobile, Console and Talk Studio for YouTube. | Can receive a software encoder feed and route it to connected channels. It also advertises prerecorded-video streaming. |
| Where the work runs | A desktop workflow requires a local app and computer. Other Streamlabs offerings have their own device and workflow requirements; their uptime behavior should not be assumed to be identical. | An encoder workflow still needs a source sending the feed to Restream. Prerecorded streaming is advertised as a cloud capability; verify its current plan limits. |
| One YouTube destination | Can send a broadcast directly to YouTube. | Can route a broadcast to YouTube, adding another service to the path. |
| Multiple destinations | Streamlabs describes multistreaming among premium features and workflows. Availability depends on the chosen product and plan. | Active destination count depends on plan. Restream’s February 9, 2026 plan-features article lists Free: 2; Standard: 3; Professional: 5; Business: 8; Enterprise: 25+. These volatile limits should be checked against current plan details before purchase. |
| Prerecorded video loop | An always-on prerecorded loop is not substantiated by the Streamlabs YouTube product page reviewed here. | Advertised for continuous video channels, with prerecorded streaming identified as a higher-plan feature. |
| Failure and recovery | No uptime service-level agreement or guaranteed recovery was established in the official materials reviewed. | Restream says its server may be restarted for maintenance when a stream runs continuously beyond 24 hours. No guaranteed recovery SLA was established. |
| Best conditional fit | A creator who needs a local production interface and primarily targets YouTube. | A creator who needs cloud routing, multiple destinations or eligible-plan prerecorded streaming. |
These are different roles, not a like-for-like reliability contest. You can use Streamlabs to produce a broadcast and Restream to distribute its encoder feed, but that combination adds a service without removing the need for a live source.
What YouTube’s duration and archive rules mean
Restream’s YouTube guide says YouTube has no stream-duration limit, but that YouTube archives only broadcasts under 12 hours. The 12-hour figure is an archive condition reported by Restream, not a maximum live duration. A 24/7 publisher should plan how to handle recordings and replays rather than expect one uninterrupted broadcast archive to be retained.

Neither this duration guidance nor a service’s ability to accept a stream establishes uninterrupted operation. Restream cautions that maintenance may restart its server after continuous streaming beyond 24 hours. That is a possibility, not a prediction that every long stream will stop. The official materials reviewed do not establish an uptime guarantee or automatic-recovery guarantee for Restream or Streamlabs.
Choose the setup that matches your source
Use Streamlabs when you need to produce a live show locally
Streamlabs lists Desktop, OBS plugin, Mobile, Console and Talk Studio as YouTube options. Choose the product that fits your device and production workflow, then confirm its current operating-system support, plan access and multistream availability. For a desktop broadcast, the computer and network connection have to remain available while they are producing and sending the stream.
YouTube supports streaming through either software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder; dedicated hardware is optional, not a general requirement for an always-on stream. First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours after enabling it. Check YouTube’s current instructions at YouTube’s encoder streaming help.

Use Restream when routing or prerecorded playback is central
For an encoder workflow, send the encoder feed to Restream and connect the YouTube destination in Restream. Restream’s YouTube setup guide says the channel must have live streaming enabled and be connected by its owner; first-time enabling requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait. Its article recommends H.264, two-second keyframes (four seconds maximum), constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 FPS and its stated audio guidance. These are recommendations from that guide, not a custom setting guarantee for every source or connection. See Restream’s YouTube setup instructions.
Restream’s general software-encoder guide recommends at least 10 Mbps upload speed and 25 Mbps or higher for Full HD. Those are Restream’s guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain a continuous broadcast. Test the actual upload path and leave headroom for network variation. The same guide says its RTMP stream key remains static unless reset; if you replace a stream card, you may need to update the key in your encoder. See Restream’s software encoder guide.
If prerecorded streaming or a specific number of destinations is essential, verify access, plan limits and current pricing before committing. Restream’s plan-feature article, dated February 9, 2026, lists the active-channel counts above and identifies prerecorded streaming and teammates among features unlocked on higher plans; these details can change. Check Restream’s current premium-feature information.

Keeping an always-on channel practical
- Make a source and recovery plan: Decide what will produce the stream and who can respond if the source, network or service stops. Do not interpret “continuous” as an uptime promise.
- Separate live duration from replay retention: For broadcasts longer than 12 hours, plan around YouTube’s archive condition as described in Restream’s guide. If saved segments matter, manage recordings separately.
- Protect the stream key: Treat it as a credential. If you reset it or change the stream setup, update the encoder or service that uses it.
- Check rights and YouTube policies: Being prerecorded does not make a video eligible to rebroadcast. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for repetitive or reused content before building a channel around loops.
- Recheck paid features: Destination counts, product availability and premium access can change. Confirm the exact plan supports your destinations and prerecorded workflow before buying.
Common problems and what to check
The stream does not start on YouTube
Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, that any first-time activation and phone-verification steps are complete, and that the connected YouTube account belongs to the channel owner. If activation was just enabled, YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours.
The encoder cannot connect to Restream
Check that the encoder is using the current Restream RTMP server details and stream key. Restream says its key normally remains static unless reset; if you replaced the stream card or reset the key, update the encoder configuration.
The stream is unstable or drops frames
Check the encoder’s output against the available upload bandwidth and review Restream’s upload guidance for the chosen resolution. A speed recommendation is not a guarantee: competing network traffic, Wi-Fi variation and the source device can affect a sustained broadcast.

A long stream restarts or has no single replay
Restream warns of possible server maintenance restarts beyond 24 hours of continuous streaming. Separately, the YouTube archive condition reported by Restream applies to broadcasts under 12 hours. Plan for interruptions and manage recordings as separate segments where needed.
A prerecorded stream feature is unavailable
Check the current Restream plan and feature page; prerecorded video streaming is described as a higher-plan feature. Do not assume every account or destination has the same access.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a loop of uploaded videos on YouTube rather than a live camera or locally produced show, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
