In eligible regions, the expanded YouTube Partner Program (YPP) can unlock fan-funding and Shopping features at a lower threshold; Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and YouTube Premium revenue require the higher threshold. Meeting either threshold makes a channel eligible for review—it does not guarantee acceptance or payment.
What you need to qualify for YouTube monetization
YouTube has two main YPP qualification levels. The lower expanded-YPP level offers earlier access to certain features; the higher level is required for ad and YouTube Premium revenue. These thresholds are current as of October 2026 and may change. Check YouTube Studio’s Earn tab and YouTube’s YPP overview for your channel’s status and the latest requirements.

Expanded YPP is available only in eligible countries and regions. YouTube’s expanded YPP information explains the regional availability and feature details. The lower threshold does not replace the higher one for ad or Premium revenue.

- Long-form route: build qualified public watch hours over a rolling 12-month period. YouTube does not count Shorts Feed watch time toward the 4,000-hour threshold.
- Shorts route: build qualified public Shorts views over a rolling 90-day period. The 10-million threshold is for the higher ad/Premium level; 3 million is the expanded-YPP alternative where available.
The routes are alternatives, not requirements you must meet together. Use the Earn tab in YouTube Studio rather than estimating from public channel totals: it tracks the progress YouTube counts toward your channel’s thresholds.

Which views and watch hours count?
Only eligible public activity contributes to the relevant thresholds. A high view count or a large total watch-time figure on a channel does not necessarily equal qualified YPP progress.
Qualified public watch hours
- Watch time from private, unlisted or deleted videos does not count.
- Watch time from ad campaigns does not count.
- Shorts watch time in the Shorts Feed does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form route.
- Livestream watch time is excluded if the stream is unlisted, deleted or not converted to video on demand.
Qualified Shorts views
- Public Shorts views in the Shorts Feed can count toward the Shorts threshold.
- Views of private, unlisted or deleted Shorts do not count.
- Views from ad campaigns and views of image posts in the Shorts Feed do not count toward the threshold.
These exclusions apply to qualification, not necessarily to every other YouTube metric. YouTube’s YPP overview and monetization feature guidance describe the current counting rules.
How to apply and what YouTube reviews
- Check your progress: In YouTube Studio, open Earn to see your channel’s current eligibility progress and available options.
- Meet the threshold and account requirements: Your channel must comply with YouTube’s channel monetization policies, be based in a YPP-available country or region, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, have 2-Step Verification enabled and have access to advanced features. You must link one active AdSense for YouTube account or be ready to set one up through Studio.
- Apply through Studio when invited: Follow the application steps shown in Earn and accept the applicable terms or monetization modules for the features you want to use.
- Wait for channel review: YouTube reviews the channel against its policies. Reaching the numerical threshold does not ensure approval. Feature eligibility can also differ, so approval for one earning feature should not be treated as automatic access to every other one.
Reviewers may assess the channel as a whole, including its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the share of watch time associated with different content, metadata and About section. YouTube expects original, authentic content; merely meeting the view and subscriber counts is not enough.

What YouTube monetization features pay for
YPP includes several distinct earning features. Availability can depend on geography, age, content and policy eligibility, as well as acceptance of the relevant terms.
- Watch Page ads: ads shown or streamed on eligible public videos watched on YouTube’s Watch Page.
- Shorts Feed ads: eligible revenue sharing from ads shown between videos in the Shorts Feed. You must accept the Shorts Monetization Module; Shorts views from before you accept it are not eligible for sharing under that module.
- YouTube Premium: revenue associated with eligible Premium members watching your content.
- Channel memberships: recurring support from viewers in exchange for channel-specific benefits, where available.
- Super Chat and Super Stickers: paid features viewers can use during eligible live chats.
- Super Thanks: a paid way for viewers to show appreciation on eligible content.
- Shopping: eligible creators may promote their own store and, where available, products from other brands through YouTube’s Shopping affiliate program.

How YouTube’s revenue shares work
YouTube publishes different revenue-share terms for different features. The percentages below use different bases and should not be compared as if each were the same share of gross ad revenue. Your accepted partner terms in YouTube Studio govern your agreement.

These are YouTube’s published terms as of October 2026, not a promise of a particular payout. YouTube says there is no guarantee about how much a creator will earn or whether they will be paid. Finalized earnings appear in AdSense for YouTube and can be affected by adjustments, invalid traffic, claims or disputes, withholding and local tax obligations. YPP review is about policy compliance and the channel’s content, not only its size. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic. Borrowed material needs significant transformation; mass-produced, generic, repetitive or manipulative output can put monetization at risk. The channel monetization policies explain the expectations.
- Reused or lightly altered material: adding minimal edits, captions or compilations to someone else’s work may not amount to significant transformation.
- Repetitive or mass-produced uploads: templates or near-identical videos produced at scale may fail the originality and authenticity review.
- Policy violations: YouTube may remove monetization even if the channel still meets subscriber and view thresholds.
- Extended inactivity: YouTube reserves the right to remove monetization from channels with no uploads or posts for six months or more.
A channel outside the higher YPP threshold may still display ads, but it is not thereby entitled to an ad-revenue share. Seeing an ad on your video is not proof that you are earning from it.
What to do if your channel streams 24/7
Livestreams can contribute to the public watch-hour route only when they are public and converted to video on demand; unlisted, deleted or non-archived livestreams are excluded from that threshold. Regardless of format, the content must meet YouTube’s monetization policies. A continuously running stream is not a shortcut around originality, copyright or YPP review.

YouTube announced updated YPP terms and activity requirements that begin February 1, 2027. These are future changes, not requirements in effect as of October 2026. YouTube says creators must accept applicable updated terms by January 31, 2027 to continue fully earning through the associated features.
Under the announcement, YouTube will consider a channel active if it meets at least one of these measures: 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, two long-form video uploads every 90 days, or five Shorts uploads every 90 days. The announcement also discusses changes to YouTube Premium Lite revenue. Review the YPP changes announcement and your Studio notices as the effective date approaches.

No. YouTube reviews the channel for policy compliance, and individual earning features may have separate eligibility rules.
