If a Restream pre-recorded video is not appearing or playing on YouTube, first check the event’s schedule and YouTube destination, then validate the video file, confirm YouTube live-streaming eligibility and channel access, and finally test a stream directly on YouTube. The right fix depends on whether the event never started, is missing from YouTube, or is playing with a black screen, buffering, or no sound.
Start by identifying what is failing
Before changing settings, note the event status in Restream, the exact error text (including “Sending Data”), whether the event or stream appears in YouTube Studio, and whether a direct YouTube test works. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which check affects the result.
- No event or stream appears: check the schedule, selected destination, channel access, and YouTube live eligibility first.
- The stream appears but shows a black screen, buffers, or has no sound: inspect the source file and compare its video and audio settings with the compatibility guidance below.
Check the Restream event and YouTube destination
- Open the pre-recorded event in Restream. Confirm it is the event you intended to run and that its scheduled time is correct.
- Check that the intended YouTube channel is selected as a destination. Restream’s event setup flow lets you select an uploaded or existing video, enter event details, choose destinations, and create the event.
- Check the event status around its scheduled start time. Restream documents scheduled pre-recorded events as airing automatically. Do not assume that every YouTube event needs a separate manual “Go Live” click in YouTube.
- If you created the event in the YouTube mobile app, check whether it is mobile-only. Restream warns that attempts to start mobile-only events through Restream fail; create an event that can be started through the intended Restream workflow instead.
Validate the uploaded video file
Required settings for Restream pre-recorded video
- Container: MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV.
- Video encoding: H.264.
- Audio encoding: AAC.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds.
If the file uses an unsupported format, Restream’s guidance is to convert it to MP4. Check the actual file’s encoding and keyframe interval; a filename ending in “.mp4” by itself does not establish that its video and audio streams use the required codecs.
Recommendations to check if the file meets the requirements but still plays badly
- Restream recommends Full HD (1080p) and 30 or 60 FPS. These are recommendations, not a requirement to use 1080p for every video.
- Restream recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It notes that a variable-bitrate (VBR) source may need re-encoding.
- Bitrate depends on the destination platform and the resolution and frame rate; do not select a single target bitrate without accounting for those settings.
- Restream recommends adding 15–20 seconds of padding at both the beginning and end of a pre-recorded video so destination platforms have time to process the stream.
Confirm YouTube live access and channel permissions
- If the channel has never streamed live before, Restream says YouTube requires phone verification and may take 24 hours to enable live streaming. Check YouTube Studio to see whether live streaming is enabled before troubleshooting the file as the cause.
- The Google account connected to Restream should own the YouTube channel. Restream says a manager or editor role alone is not sufficient for this connection.
- Check whether the YouTube event appears in Studio and whether YouTube reports an eligibility, account, or event issue. A scheduled Restream event and YouTube’s permission to stream are separate checks.
If Restream is stuck on “Sending Data” or YouTube cannot see the stream
- Confirm that YouTube live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the connected account has the required channel ownership.
- Check the stream settings against YouTube’s compatibility guidance below.
- If access is in order but the connection still fails, remove and reconnect the YouTube channel in Restream. As part of this reconnection sequence, Restream advises resetting the stream key in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as private: do not post or share it.
- Try going live directly through YouTube, independently of Restream. If the direct test also fails, Restream advises contacting YouTube support; if it succeeds, that result helps narrow the issue to the Restream event or its connection.
Restream’s guidance notes that some destinations, such as TikTok or Instagram, may require a manual start on the platform. It does not identify YouTube as one of those examples for this pre-recorded-event flow, so do not assume that a manual YouTube start is always required.

YouTube stream settings to compare
These are the YouTube input recommendations in Restream’s connection guidance. Choose a bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate rather than treating the full range as one target.
| Setting | Restream’s YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Resolution | 240p–2160p |
| Bitrate | 3,000–40,000 Kbps, depending on resolution and FPS |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 FPS |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; 4 seconds maximum |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps for stereo; 384 Kbps for 5.1 |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 KHz for stereo; 48 KHz for 5.1 |
The pre-recorded-video requirements and the YouTube connection recommendations serve different checks: the former specify AAC audio and a 2-second keyframe interval for the source file, while the YouTube guidance also lists MP3 audio as an acceptable input and allows a keyframe interval up to 4 seconds. For a Restream pre-recorded upload, start with the stricter file requirements above.

Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | Check next |
|---|---|
| The scheduled video never starts | Verify the event’s scheduled time, selected YouTube destination, channel eligibility, and whether it was created in the YouTube mobile app. |
| Restream says “Sending Data,” or the stream is not visible on YouTube | Check live access and channel ownership, reconnect the YouTube channel and reset the key if needed, then try a direct YouTube test. |
| YouTube shows a stream, but the picture is black or playback buffers | Inspect the file’s video encoding, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval; compare those values with the recommendations. |
| The video plays without sound | Confirm that the source contains an audio track and that its codec and sample rate match the applicable file and YouTube settings. |
| The direct YouTube test also fails | Resolve the YouTube account, eligibility, event, or stream-setting issue first; Restream advises contacting YouTube support if the direct test fails too. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option from troubleshooting a Restream event: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI works for customers in India. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
