To make a website work well on phones, build it to adapt to the space and input people actually use—not to a short list of phone and tablet sizes. These seven practices help pages reflow at narrow widths, stay readable when magnified, and remain usable with touch, keyboard, and assistive technology.
1. Set the viewport to the device width
Without a viewport declaration, some mobile browsers lay out a page on a wider virtual canvas and then shrink it to fit. That can make text tiny and prevent narrow-screen media queries from behaving as intended. Add this to the document’s <head>:

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
The width=device-width setting aligns the layout viewport with the device width. initial-scale=1 is common, though MDN notes it is usually unnecessary when the width is set; if you see unwanted initial shrinking, investigate overflow rather than treating the scale setting as its cure. Do not disable zoom with maximum-scale or user-scalable=no, which can make pages harder to access. See MDN’s viewport meta tag guidance and web.dev’s viewport overview.

2. Let layouts and media flex
Fixed-width layouts can force horizontal scrolling on a phone or leave excessive empty space on a wide display. Use flexible grids, relative sizing, and intrinsic or minimum/maximum sizing so components can use the available space without assuming one exact width. For an image that should shrink within its container without becoming larger than its intrinsic size, a common rule is:

Flexible sizing also helps accommodate viewport widths you did not anticipate. MDN’s responsive design overview covers flexible layouts and media.
3. Start narrow and add breakpoints when content needs them
Begin with the narrow layout, then widen the viewport until the content would benefit from a different arrangement. Add a breakpoint when text, navigation, or columns become cramped, difficult to scan, or too spread out—not simply because a particular phone or tablet model exists. Device categories change, and a screen’s size does not tell you whether its user has touch, a keyboard, or a pointer.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
Not every component needs a media query. Flexible grids and relative or constrained sizing can handle many widths on their own; use a media query when the content calls for a meaningful structural change. MDN explains both approaches in its responsive design guidance.
4. Choose image sizes for the layout and avoid unnecessary downloads
Responsive image techniques can let the browser select an appropriate candidate for the rendered size or display resolution. This is different from merely shrinking a desktop-sized image with CSS: choosing among candidates can avoid sending a larger asset when a smaller one is suitable. For images loaded through CSS, mobile-first styling can also avoid downloading large desktop-specific images in some cases; that technique does not apply to images loaded in HTML.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
For below-the-fold images, lazy loading can defer downloads until images are in or near the viewport, which may avoid fetching images a visitor never reaches. Whether these choices improve perceived speed or data use on a particular site depends on its assets, layout, and visitors; measure rather than promise a specific gain. See MDN’s responsive images guide.
5. Keep text readable and preserve reflow and zoom
People should be able to enlarge a page without losing content or needing to scroll horizontally to read ordinary text. Responsive layouts support phone users and people with low vision who magnify content. Avoid fixed dimensions or clipped containers that make text disappear as it grows.

W3C WAI describes a common way for reading-oriented pages to meet WCAG’s reflow criterion: fit content into a single column at a 320 CSS-pixel viewport and require only vertical scrolling to read. That is a reference for reflow, not a rule that every kind of content must become one column; some content may legitimately need two-dimensional presentation. Read W3C WAI’s explanation of WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.10.

Do not assume a small screen always means touch or a large screen always means mouse. Use semantic buttons and links, visible form labels, meaningful accessible names, and a logical keyboard focus order. When CSS Grid or Flexbox changes visual order, verify that keyboard and screen-reader users encounter items in a sensible document order too.

- Keep controls labeled, including form fields and icon-only actions.
- Do not lock content to one screen orientation unless that orientation is essential.
- Where practical, let users cancel or undo touch interactions.
These checks reflect the practical considerations in web.dev’s mobile accessibility guidance.
7. Test widths, orientations, and interaction—not just device presets
Resize the browser continuously rather than checking only a few named device sizes. Test orientation changes and relevant touch, pointer, and keyboard interactions. Look for failures that a screenshot alone can miss:
- Horizontal page overflow or content cut off at the edges.
- Text that is difficult to read or controls that overlap when enlarged.
- Navigation that becomes awkward to reach or use.
- Focus order that no longer matches the visual flow.
- Images or other media that overflow or fail to fit their container.
Lighthouse audits can help identify a missing viewport configuration or content overflowing the viewport, as described in web.dev’s viewport guidance. Treat automated findings as diagnostics: they cannot tell you on their own whether a person can complete the page’s key tasks comfortably. Pair them with checks of the real interaction flow.
