Resolving the “Driver Unavailable” Error on Windows 10 and Windows 11

“Driver Unavailable” means Windows could not match a working driver to your printer. Here is the step-by-step order to follow in Windows 10 and 11, from checking your system details to rolling back a recent driver update.

When a printer shows “Driver Unavailable” or “No Driver Available” in Windows, the fastest reliable route is to let Windows try its own driver first, then install the manufacturer’s driver for your exact model and Windows version if Windows cannot find one. Removing and re-adding the printer comes next, and rolling back a driver is worth trying only if the problem began right after a driver update. The steps below cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What the message does and does not tell you

“Driver Unavailable” describes a state, not a cause. It means Windows could not find a working driver to match the printer it detected. Microsoft Support lists several situations that can lead to driver compatibility problems:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Windows was upgraded to a newer version.
  • A Windows update was installed.
  • A driver was used that was not designed for your version of Windows.

Microsoft Support states: “Printer driver compatibility issues can occur after upgrading Windows, installing updates, or using a driver that isn’t designed for your Windows version.” Any one of these may apply to your PC, and none of them is guaranteed to apply. Different printer models and Windows configurations show this message, so identify your model, Windows version, and connection before choosing a fix. No single cause covers every manufacturer, and none of the steps below is guaranteed to work for every printer.

Before you start: record four details

Gather these details before you select or download anything. A driver that matches only the printer name can still fail if it is built for a different Windows version or processor type.

  • Windows edition and version. Open Start > Settings > System > About. Note the edition (for example, Home or Pro) and the version listed there.
  • System type. On the same About page, check whether the PC is 64-bit or 32-bit operating system.
  • Exact printer model. Read it from the label on the printer or from its control panel or settings screen. A series name such as “2700 series” may cover several models, so the full model number matters.
  • Connection type. Note whether the printer connects by USB, over the network, or wirelessly. The steps differ slightly for each.

Step 1: Let Windows look for a driver

Windows Update and the Printers & scanners settings are the first place to check, because Windows can often install a suitable driver without any download from you.

Step 2: Download the exact driver from the manufacturer

When Windows cannot find a suitable driver, the manufacturer’s official support site is the safest source. Use this sequence:

Amazon Basics USB-A to USB-B 2.0 Cable for Printer or External Hard Drive, Gold-Plated Connectors, 10 Foot, Black
  • IN THE BOX: (1) 10-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to protect against noise, minimizing interference for a clear signal
  1. Open the printer manufacturer’s official support website from a search result you can verify as the company’s own domain.
  2. Search for the exact model number recorded earlier.
  3. Select the driver that matches your Windows version and whether your system is 32-bit or 64-bit. Choose a newer driver over an older one where both are offered.
  4. Run the installer and follow its prompts. Restart the PC if the installer asks you to.
  5. Try printing a test page.

Avoid third-party driver download utilities. Driver tools of that kind are not part of Microsoft’s guidance, and the official manufacturer download is the source that matches your exact model.

Step 3: Remove the printer and add it again

If the manufacturer driver is installed but the printer still shows the error, the printer entry itself may be out of date. Microsoft notes that reinstalling refreshes driver files and settings.

  4. Return to Printers & scanners and select Add a printer or scanner.

  6. Print a test page.

Step 4: Roll back a recent driver update only if the timing fits

Use this step only if the message appeared directly after a driver update. If the problem began months ago, or you have never changed the driver, skip it. Rolling back an unrelated driver does not solve the error.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Printers or Print queues, depending on which group lists your printer.
  3. Open the printer’s Properties.
  4. Select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver.
  5. Restart the PC and test printing.

If the Roll Back Driver option is unavailable, Windows has no previous driver stored for that device, and this step does not apply.

Power-cycle the printer and PC

Microsoft recommends this sequence when a driver change does not take effect:

  1. Turn off the printer and wait 10 seconds.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Turn the printer back on.
  4. Try printing again.

When the cable matters

A cable matters only for a USB-connected printer, and only to confirm that the physical connection is sound. A cable does not install or repair a driver, so it is not a fix for “Driver Unavailable.” If your printer is USB-connected, check that the cable is seated at both ends and try a different USB port on the PC. Manufacturer installation guides, such as the SATO Printer Driver Installation Manual, describe USB as one installation path, but they do not present a cable as a remedy for this message. If the printer is network or wireless, the cable step does not apply.

What to avoid

  • Third-party driver utilities. Use Windows or the manufacturer’s official site instead.
  • Manually deleting driver packages from the driver store. Microsoft Q&A guidance warns that this can cause unpredictable behavior. Removing a printer entry through Printers & scanners, as in Step 3, is the supported way to clear it.
  • Assuming a forum fix applies to your printer. A community example from the HP Support Community involved a Windows 11 S Mode configuration, which is specific to that case. Check that any fix matches your model, Windows edition, and system type.

Where this leaves you

Work through the steps in order: Windows driver update, then the manufacturer’s driver for your exact model and Windows version, then removal and re-adding, with rollback only where the timing fits. If the printer still shows “Driver Unavailable” after all of these, record the exact model, Windows edition and version, system type, and connection type, and contact the printer manufacturer’s support team with those details.
