To change a picture’s dimensions on a Mac, open it in Preview, choose Tools > Adjust Size, and enter a width and height or select a preset. Leave Scale proportionally selected to keep the image’s shape. If you want to crop or reframe the picture instead, use Photos’ crop controls.
Change a picture’s width and height in Preview

Open the image in Preview. In Preview, choose File > Open and select the picture, or double-click the image in Finder or on the desktop. See Apple’s Preview getting-started guide for opening files.

Enter the desired width and height, choose a size from Fit into, or enter a percentage. Apple’s Preview image resizing guide documents these options.

Keep Scale proportionally selected if you want to preserve the image’s original proportions. Changing one dimension then updates the other. When you choose a fit preset, the resulting width or height may be smaller than the preset’s maximum so the picture keeps its shape.
Click OK to apply the change, then save the image. If you need to keep the original unchanged, use File > Duplicate before resizing and save the copy.

Resize several pictures at once
Preview can apply one size adjustment to multiple images displayed in the same window:

Open the pictures together in one Preview window.

Select the images you want in the sidebar.

Choose Tools > Adjust Size and set the dimensions or fit preset.

Apple documents this batch workflow in its Preview image resizing guide. Check the resulting dimensions before saving if the images have different original proportions; proportional scaling can give them different final widths or heights.
Make the image file take up less space
A smaller picture on screen and a smaller image file are different outcomes. To reduce file size through Preview, choose Tools > Adjust Size, select Resample image, and enter a smaller Resolution value. Preview shows the new size at the bottom of the dialog. Apple says this can reduce disk usage or make an image quicker to download; see its instructions for reducing image file size.

This control is not the same as changing how large a picture appears on a screen. If you need specific pixel dimensions, set width and height instead. If you lower resolution, inspect the result at its intended use size because reducing image data can affect detail.
Crop or change the picture’s shape in Photos
Use cropping when you want to remove edges, reframe a subject, or fit a particular aspect ratio—not when you need an exact pixel width and height. In Photos, open the picture, click Edit, then choose Crop. Adjust the crop area or choose a ratio; Apple gives square, 4:5, and 16:9 as examples. For a quick choice: use Preview’s Adjust Size for dimensions, Preview’s Resample image and Resolution controls when reducing file size, Preview’s sidebar selection for a batch, and Photos’ Crop controls for composition or aspect ratio.
