For more consistent short AI videos, treat each generation as one directed shot: anchor the look with a suitable reference image when continuity matters, describe one plausible action and the camera behavior, then refine the result in small steps. Text-to-video is useful when you need freedom to invent a scene; image-to-video is usually the better starting point when a particular subject, composition, lighting, or style should carry through.
Choose text-to-video or image-to-video
Text-to-video starts with a written description. It suits scenes you are inventing from scratch, including flexible B-roll and backgrounds. It can also be useful for complex motion sequences because the generation is not bound to a specific starting image, according to Runway’s text-to-video guide.

Image-to-video starts with an image you supply. That image gives the model a visual anchor for the subject, framing, lighting, and style, while the prompt can concentrate on what should move. Choose this approach for a recurring character or product, or whenever the opening composition matters. A reference communicates a target appearance; it does not guarantee identical outputs across generations.
- Choose text-to-video when you do not have a required starting image and want to explore a scene or motion freely.
- Choose image-to-video when a specific appearance or composition should guide the shot.
Build a prompt around one shot
Describe what the viewer should see and how it should move. For text-to-video, a useful pattern is: subject and setting, one subject action, relevant environmental motion, camera behavior, and—only if it matters—style or lighting. For image-to-video, let the image establish the visible details and use the prompt mainly to direct movement and camera work. Keep the requested action physically plausible for the selected clip duration. Runway’s Gen-4 documentation describes 5- and 10-second generations for that model and advises treating a generation as a scene; those durations are model-specific, not a general limit for AI video tools. - Start with the essential action. Generate a simple version with one main movement and the intended camera behavior.
- Check the specific miss. Identify whether the problem is the subject’s action, camera motion, a visual detail, or the overall style.
- Change one element. Revise only the part that failed, then generate again. This makes it easier to see which prompt change helped.
- Keep useful wording stable. For a sequence of related shots, reuse the same concise style and lighting language while adapting the action to each shot.
Runway recommends adding prompt elements incrementally rather than changing the whole description at once. Generative results vary, so iteration improves direction but cannot promise a specific result. Its Gen-4 guide also advises positive phrasing; negative instructions can lead to unpredictable or opposite outcomes. Instead of writing “no camera movement,” say “locked camera,” and describe any movement that is allowed.

Use references to anchor recurring subjects and style
For a consistent character, product, or visual treatment, begin with clear source media and keep the subject framed consistently. Runway’s reference media guidelines recommend clear, well-lit face references and complementary style references. A small set of references with a shared palette, lighting, and mood is more coherent than images that point toward conflicting aesthetics.
Inspect the reference for motion cues before generating. Blur, directional lines, dust, or a mid-action pose may suggest a movement different from the one in your prompt. A more neutral starting image—or an edit that removes the conflicting cue—can make the intended motion clearer. If a person is identifiable, secure appropriate permission to depict them and follow the service’s current rules; Runway places responsibility for reference-media rights and permissions on the submitter.

Diagnose common continuity problems

Extend a sequence by joining short clips
When a single generation is too short, create a sequence of shots and join them in an editor. Runway describes reusing a generation’s final frame as the image input for the next image-to-video clip. Because that frame is shared between the two generations, remove the repeated frame during editing. Review the join for changes in subject appearance, framing, lighting, and motion; a shared frame can help connect shots but does not ensure a seamless transition.

Check rights and availability before publishing
Runway says that, as between the user and Runway, users retain ownership and rights to content uploaded to and generated on its service, and that outputs may be used in contexts including monetized short-form video and product advertising. Runway also says its attribution is not formally required. These are Runway’s statements about its service; they do not resolve rights in third-party source material, local law, or a publishing platform’s policies. Review the current Runway usage-rights terms and obtain permission for material or likenesses you do not control.
