Residential proxies route a web automation client’s traffic through residential IP addresses. For an authorized workflow, choose a location the target permits, decide whether each request needs a new address or a continuing session, and configure authentication and protocol to match your client. A proxy does not grant permission to automate a site or bypass its controls.
What residential proxies do—and what they do not do
A proxy sits between an automation client and a destination website, forwarding the client’s requests through an IP address supplied by a proxy network. A residential proxy uses an address associated with a residential connection. The practical configuration questions are which location to use, whether requests share an IP, how the client authenticates, and which network protocol it supports.

IPRoyal lists web scraping, ad verification, market research, testing, SEO research, and data aggregation as potential applications of its residential proxy service. These are vendor-described use cases, not evidence that any particular website allows automated access. A proxy changes the network route; it does not authorize collection, remove contractual obligations, or guarantee access.

Check permission before configuring a proxy
Before sending automated requests, check the target site’s terms, robots.txt, API rules, rate limits, and applicable law. IPRoyal’s Acceptable Use Policy prohibits circumventing access controls, robots.txt directives, API limitations, technical rate limits, and other contractual or technical restrictions. It also restricts unauthorized access to protected content, excessive requests that disrupt a service, and surveillance of identifiable people. The policy is IPRoyal’s provider rule, not a complete statement of law in every jurisdiction; review the current policy and the target’s rules.
#1 Best Overall
IPRoyal’s domain-access documentation describes site-specific identity checks, additional conditions, and sites it says remain inaccessible. Treat those as provider-specific access conditions, not as instructions to work around them.
Choose the settings that fit the workflow
Location targeting
Select only a location needed for a permitted task. IPRoyal documents country and region selection, with city or state choices where available. Availability varies by the provider’s offering; confirm the options in its current interface rather than assuming every location can be selected.
Rotating or sticky sessions
In IPRoyal’s configuration, Randomize IP changes the IP on each request. Sticky IP keeps an IP for a selected period. Per-request rotation can fit independent requests that do not rely on a persistent address; a sticky session can fit a legitimate workflow that needs continuity across related requests. This is a workflow-based choice, not a claim that either mode performs better or avoids blocks.
IPRoyal documents sticky-session TTL values from 1 second to 7 days. That setting is a requested session duration, not a guarantee that a particular address will remain available for the whole period: the provider notes that residential pool participants can leave.
Authentication and credential handling
IPRoyal documents username-and-password authentication and IP whitelisting. Follow the provider’s current instructions and use the method that fits your deployment. Keep proxy credentials out of source code, client-side applications, and public logs; store them with appropriate access controls and rotate them if exposed.
Protocol and client compatibility
IPRoyal documents HTTP/HTTPS and SOCKS5, and says its residential proxies support TCP connections. Check which protocol and connection types your automation tool supports, then configure the proxy endpoint accordingly. Do not assume a client supports every proxy protocol just because the provider offers it.
Usage model and monitoring
IPRoyal describes both subscription and pay-as-you-go purchasing models. Its dashboard documentation includes usage statistics by period and website, plus downloadable reports. Compare those controls against your expected traffic and the need to attribute usage to particular workflows. No current price is stated here; check the provider’s live pricing before choosing a plan.

Set up an IPRoyal residential proxy workflow
The following is a provider-specific setup outline based on IPRoyal’s documentation, not an independently tested recommendation. Exact dashboard labels and available options may change.
- Confirm authorization. Review the destination’s terms, robots.txt, API rules, and rate limits, as well as applicable law and the provider’s current acceptable-use policy.
- Select a residential product and purchase model. Choose the provider option that fits the authorized workload, then verify current pricing and terms before purchase.
- Set the location. Choose the required country or region; select city or state only if available and necessary for the permitted task.
- Choose session behavior. Use per-request rotation for independent requests that do not require a persistent address, or a sticky session where the authorized workflow requires continuity.
- Set a sticky TTL if using a sticky session. IPRoyal’s guide documents a 1-second-to-7-day range. Allow for the possibility that an address becomes unavailable before the selected interval ends.
- Configure authentication and protocol. Apply the provider’s current username/password or IP-whitelisting instructions and select a protocol supported by the automation client.
- Test the configuration. IPRoyal describes using its proxy tester to check configuration, connectivity, and speed. Treat that as the provider’s own diagnostic tool, not an independent performance assessment.
- Monitor usage. Review dashboard traffic statistics and reports, including usage by website, and adjust settings if the workload or authorization changes.
Configure a browser automation client safely
There is no single universal proxy configuration command: the exact endpoint, port, credentials, and protocol come from the provider, while the setting or API varies by automation library. Enter the provider’s current connection details in the client’s documented proxy configuration, keep secrets in environment variables or a secret manager, and test against a destination you are authorized to access. Do not interpret a successful connection as permission to automate a site.

For website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It is a screenshot service, not a residential proxy, so it is an alternative when the task is capturing a page rather than configuring a general proxy workflow. Its capture can remove cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

The client cannot connect to the proxy
Check that the endpoint, port, credentials, and selected protocol match the provider’s current instructions and the client’s supported settings. Confirm the client can make the relevant TCP connection. Use the provider’s tester as a configuration check if appropriate.
Authentication fails
Recheck the username and password or IP whitelist configuration against the provider instructions. Ensure secrets were not copied with extra spaces, changed, or exposed and subsequently rotated.
The IP or location changes unexpectedly
Verify whether the workflow is using per-request rotation or a sticky session and whether the intended TTL was selected. A sticky TTL does not guarantee a residential address will remain available for its full duration.
A destination refuses access
Do not respond by trying to evade a restriction. Check the target’s terms and permitted access paths, including whether an official API or authorization is required. Provider-specific domain restrictions may also apply.
Traffic is higher than expected
Use available dashboard statistics or reports to identify the period and website associated with the traffic. Check for unintended retries or repeated requests in your own workflow, and respect the destination’s rate limits.
Reliability and cost considerations
Residential addresses come from a pool whose participants may leave; session settings therefore should not be treated as an availability guarantee. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish independent comparative figures for speed, uptime, success rates, or block avoidance, so those should not be inferred from a provider feature list or a configuration test.
Estimate usage from the actual authorized workflow, monitor provider-reported traffic, and review the current purchasing terms before committing. IPRoyal documents pay-as-you-go and subscription options, but pricing and feature availability can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does using a residential proxy make web scraping legal?
No. A proxy does not provide authorization. Check the target site’s rules and applicable law before automating access.
Quick Recap
Is a sticky IP guaranteed to last for the selected TTL?
No. IPRoyal documents a sticky-session duration setting, but notes that pool participants can leave, so the address may not remain available for the full interval.
