The clearest documented differences are in Resident Evil 2 (2019)—including tougher zombies, altered pacing and progression—and Resident Evil 3 (2020), where a familiar dodge mechanic works differently. The right comparison is game by game: decide whether you value the original’s design and context, the remake’s revised approach, or both.
What counts as a Resident Evil remake?
Capcom’s timeline identifies the 2002 Resident Evil as a remake of the 1996 game, Resident Evil 2 as a remake of the January 1998 release, and Resident Evil 3 as a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (September 1999). Capcom describes Resident Evil 4 (2023) as based on the 2005 game. Capcom’s series timeline establishes those pairings.

“Remake” does not mean the same thing for every entry. For Resident Evil 2, Capcom used the term “reimagining” and said the 2019 release was built from the ground up for contemporary platforms, rather than simply polishing the older game’s visuals. Capcom’s 2022 announcement calls it a reimagining; its 2019 release announcement describes the ground-up build.

How to compare an original and its remake
Use the same questions for each pair, but don’t assume every remake changes every category. Capcom’s official comparisons give concrete examples for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, not an exhaustive audit of the series.
#1 Best Overall
- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
- Presentation: How characters, enemies and locations are depicted, and how the camera and audiovisual presentation shape the experience.
- Controls and combat: Whether movement, aiming or defensive actions work differently, and how enemy resilience affects ammunition and healing decisions.
- Level and encounter design: Whether routes, room layouts, encounter placement or the timing of visits to locations have changed.
- Story and characterization: Whether scenes, dialogue, character portrayals or supporting characters’ fates differ.
- Content and progression: Whether items, clues, unlocks or other content are found or accessed differently.
- Access and edition: Which version, platform and edition you are comparing; a bundle or store listing may include content not present in another edition.
Resident Evil 2: 1998 original vs. 2019 remake
Capcom’s February 1, 2021 retrospective documents changes in combat, pacing, character presentation and item discovery. These examples show why the 2019 game is more than a visual refresh, but they are not a complete inventory of every difference.
Combat and resource pressure
Capcom describes the remake’s zombies as unusually tough: even a head shot does not always bring one down. That changes how a player weighs clearing a corridor against conserving ammunition and leaving a threat behind. A familiar location can therefore create a different practical problem even when the broad setting is recognizable.
Rank #2
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Locations and pacing
Gun Shop Kendo appears earlier in the original; in the remake, the player reaches it around the middle of the game, and the location itself was substantially changed. The shift affects both when the player encounters the setting and how the remake uses it.
Ada’s presentation and equipment
Ada’s look in the remake leans toward a spy presentation. She also receives an EMF Visualizer, which detects and projects electromagnetic fields and can remotely control some electronics. This changes the tools associated with her sections, not just her appearance.
Rank #3
- CLASSIC RESIDENT EVIL GAMEPLAY -- Overcome chilling encounters in a relentless fight for survival that ratchets up the intensity through nail-biting exploration and gripping puzzle-solving.
- EXPLORE RACCOON CITY FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- Get even closer to the action with an over-the-shoulder camera and updated control scheme, drawing you into every bloodcurdling encounter.
- SURVIVE TOGETHER IN THE MULTIPLAYER MODE -- Bring up to four friends into the carnage with Resident Evil Resistance, a multiplayer survival horror experience included in the Resident Evil 3 package. Available as a PlayStation 4 title compatible on all PlayStation 5 devices. Includes code necessary for redemption, requires additional download not on disc.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Finding the Rebecca Chambers photo
The photograph is obtained differently. In the original, the player had to examine a desk in the S.T.A.R.S. office repeatedly; Capcom’s retrospective says the remake changes the method. It is a small but useful example of how progression and discovery can diverge even when an item is familiar.
Capcom’s retrospective says the remake can be enjoyed without having played the original. That makes the 2019 game a valid entry point, while the original remains the direct way to experience the 1998 design in its own context. Capcom’s RE2 comparison covers these examples.
Rank #4
- Return to the series origins - Discover the truth behind what led to the horrors at the Mansion in Resident Evil in this fan-favorite and popular prequel title to the series.
- Completely enhanced visuals - New high-resolution textures have been created from scratch, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, while still preserving the classic appearance of the original release.
- Fan-favorite Resident Evil characters - Rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and wanted criminal Billy Coen combine skills and buddy up to survive the undead and infected nightmares that await them.
- All original difficulty levels plus new Very Easy Mode for novice players
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis vs. Resident Evil 3 (2020)
The most clearly documented mechanical comparison is the dodge. Capcom says the original Resident Evil 3 was the first series entry to introduce a dodge mechanic, and that it returned in the remake. But the remake’s timing is described as surprisingly tight, and its execution differs enough to challenge players who already know the original. Returning players should not assume their old timing will carry over unchanged.

Parasites introduced in the remake and continuity details such as Big E posters are further examples. These illustrate changes to story and characterization as well as mechanics; they should not be read as an exhaustive list of everything altered.
Best Value
Capcom’s RE3 comparison discusses these examples. The available detail supports a pair-specific account, not a claim that every remake alters characters or story in the same way.
What can be said about the first-game and RE4 remakes?
Capcom’s timeline confirms the broad pairings: the 2002 first-game remake follows the 1996 Resident Evil, and the 2023 Resident Evil 4 is based on the 2005 game. The official material cited here does not provide the same feature-by-feature original-versus-remake comparison available for RE2 and RE3. It would therefore be misleading to present detailed claims about their specific mechanics, pacing or story changes as established by these sources.
Which version should you play?
Choose based on the experience you want, rather than an assumed series-wide ranking.
- Choose a remake if you want the revised interpretation and its changed mechanics, presentation or progression. Capcom says the RE2 remake stands on its own for newcomers.
- Choose an original if you want to experience the release that the remake reinterprets, including its original design choices.
- Play both if you want to see how a particular pair differs. The strongest documented comparisons here are RE2 and RE3; don’t assume the same pattern applies to the other entries.
