Resident Evil Requiem is the strongest pick for scares, while the hardest game depends on what kind of challenge you mean and which difficulty setting you play. This editorial ranking separates fear from gameplay difficulty rather than pretending there is one official, measured order. It covers the mainline games and major remakes through Resident Evil Requiem, using standard difficulty and an experienced-but-not-expert player as the baseline; individual settings, controls and familiarity can shift the difficulty order.
How to read these rankings
Capcom says the series began in 1996 and describes its core as fear, solving mysteries and survival. The company reported more than 170 million units sold as of March 31, 2025; that is a dated series-wide figure, not a current sales total. Capcom’s 2025 Online Integrated Report gives the company’s framing and figure.

The scare ranking weighs sustained atmosphere, vulnerability, pursuit pressure, body horror, sudden shocks and the effect of perspective. The difficulty ranking instead considers combat demands, ammunition and healing scarcity, puzzles, checkpoints and save pressure. These are editorial criteria, not Capcom categories. The lists focus on mainline entries and their substantial remakes, rather than every spin-off or port; they are not an official Capcom ranking.
Resident Evil games ranked by scare level
- Resident Evil Requiem — The leading scare pick in this ranking. GamesRadar+ describes it as the scariest entry yet and gives it 10/10 in its horror-game roundup, an outlet’s editorial rating rather than a standardized measurement. GamesRadar+’s horror-games list was accessed October 7, 2026.
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — Its first-person perspective keeps threats physically close and helps sustain a sense of vulnerability. GamesRadar+ specifically highlights the uncomfortably close feel of its horror. Capcom lists Resident Evil 7 among the games with a VR version, which can intensify immersion for players using that version; VR is a presentation option, not a different ranking category. Capcom’s player guide, published October 18, 2024, also lists VR versions of Resident Evil 4 and Village.
- Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) — Tight spaces, pursuit pressure and a strong sense of vulnerability make it a high-scare entry. GamesRadar+ rates it 9/10 on its subjective scare scale. GameSpot also places both versions of Resident Evil 2 first in its best-games list and notes that the 2019 remake retains the series’ scares. GameSpot’s best Resident Evil games list.
- Resident Evil (2002 remake) — Its confined mansion, deliberate pacing and limited resources create classic survival-horror tension. It relies more on atmosphere and anticipation than on constant pursuit or a first-person viewpoint.
- Resident Evil Village — Its horror varies across distinct areas and encounters, so the scare level is less uniform than in Resident Evil 7. Capcom identifies a VR version, but the availability of a VR version does not itself establish that it is scarier than other entries.
- Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake) — Nemesis’s pursuit drives the fear, but the more action-forward pacing can make it feel less persistently oppressive than Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 7.
- Resident Evil 4 (2005 original and 2023 remake) — Both versions build tension through dangerous encounters and limited resources, but their action emphasis usually makes them less consistently frightening than the strongest survival-horror entries above. Capcom lists a VR version of Resident Evil 4; this is a format distinction, not evidence for a higher baseline scare rank.
- Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 — Their co-op and action focus shifts the emphasis toward combat and set pieces. They can still deliver startling moments, but are less centered on prolonged vulnerability and dread.
This is not the same as a review-score ranking. Metacritic’s cited Resident Evil list is ordered by Metascore and applies its own rules for platforms, remakes and exclusions; it does not measure scare level or difficulty. Metacritic’s Resident Evil ranking explains its list scope.

Resident Evil games ranked by difficulty
There is no standardized franchise-wide difficulty ranking in the cited sources. The order below is a practical editorial comparison for standard difficulty, assuming familiarity with survival-horror conventions but not expert mastery. A higher difficulty setting, unfamiliar controls or first-time play can change the experience substantially.
- Resident Evil (2002 remake) — Resource scarcity, limited inventory, puzzles and the need to manage routes make it a demanding overall survival-horror test, especially for a first-time player. The challenge is as much planning and restraint as combat precision.
- Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) — Ammunition management, dangerous enemies and pursuit pressure make mistakes costly. Combat and navigation both demand care, though its checkpoint and difficulty options mean the experience can vary considerably.
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — Close-range encounters and scarce supplies put pressure on aim and resource use. The first-person perspective can also make threats harder to track for players unfamiliar with it.
- Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) — Its combat asks for accurate aiming, crowd control and tactical use of resources. Players who are less comfortable with action-game combat may find it more demanding than the older survival-focused entries.
- Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake) — Pursuit encounters and combat can be intense, but its more action-forward structure makes the overall challenge less consistently dependent on exploration and resource planning.
- Resident Evil Village — Its mix of combat, exploration and distinct encounter types creates uneven difficulty rather than one sustained kind of pressure. Player familiarity with action controls and the selected mode matter greatly.
- Resident Evil 4 (2005 original) — The older control and combat conventions can add friction for newcomers, while experienced players may find its resource and encounter demands manageable.
- Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 — Their action-centered combat can be demanding, particularly when played solo or on higher settings, but the overall challenge is less focused on scarce-resource survival than in the entries above.
- Resident Evil Requiem — It belongs in the scare discussion, but the cited material does not establish a comparable difficulty position across the franchise. Its difficulty should be judged by its selectable mode and play experience rather than inferred from its scare rating.
Which Resident Evil game should you choose?
- For the strongest current scare recommendation: Resident Evil Requiem, with the qualification that GamesRadar+’s 10/10 is an editorial rating, not a universal scale.
- For close, sustained first-person horror: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
- For a modern balance of scares and survival challenge: Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake).
- For classic survival-horror resource and puzzle pressure: Resident Evil (2002 remake).
- For action with meaningful combat demands: Resident Evil 4, especially the 2023 remake.
Capcom’s guide is explicitly intended to help players choose a first or next game and identifies Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7 and Village as having VR versions. Check the relevant edition and platform before choosing, since a ranking cannot establish current store availability or platform compatibility.
