For a focused two-player campaign, choose Resident Evil 5. For a more sprawling, unpredictable action game with four connected story threads, choose Resident Evil 6. Both games support campaign co-op, including couch and online play in the documented versions, but the best fit depends on how much variety—and chaos—you want from a session with a friend.

Choose Resident Evil 5 for a focused co-op campaign
Resident Evil 5 is the straightforward recommendation if the main goal is to play a campaign together. The co-op is central to the decision: Capcom’s console manuals document cooperative play, including split-screen and online modes.
On Steam for PC, local split-screen is available too. Capcom announced the feature in its February 27, 2023 update, which also removed Games for Windows Live support. That update matters because older PC guides may say the Steam version does not have local split-screen; check the guide’s date and the edition you plan to play.

Choose Resident Evil 6 for more story variety and action
Resident Evil 6 is the better fit if you and your partner want a broader, more chaotic action game rather than a single focused campaign structure. Steam describes four interwoven story threads and two-player co-op, with one important exception: Ada Wong’s campaign is for one player.
Capcom’s official manual documents offline split-screen, and its online co-op instructions cover online play. PC Gamer writer Robert Zak, in an article updated March 4, 2026, offered a positive personal take after playing with a human partner: “Resident Evil 6 turns into one of the most enjoyable co-op games I’ve played in recent memory.” That is one reviewer’s experience, not a consensus verdict.
