RE6’s Steam listing says “Partial Controller Support”, so neither that label nor a fix documented for one game guarantees compatibility or a performance improvement on every PC.
Identify the game and the kind of problem first
Before changing settings or files, note which game is affected, where it was purchased, your Windows version, controller model and connection method, and your display setup. Separate the symptom into input (for example, a controller not recognized), display, or a slowdown during a menu, loading, or alt-tab transition. A remedy documented for RE5 should not be assumed to apply to RE6.
- Input: Check the game-specific controller information below before changing remapping software or configuration files.
- Display or performance: Begin with the game’s own video settings. There is no documented universally optimal preset for modern PCs in the cited references.
- Brief transition slowdown: For RE6, compare the timing with the community-reported behavior described below; it is not a general benchmark.
Fix controller layout and detection issues
Resident Evil 5: change the button layout in-game
Capcom’s FAQ for the Steam version of RE5 gives the menu path Options > Controller Settings for changing button layouts. Select a layout there, then test it during gameplay to confirm the buttons behave as expected. The FAQ documents layout changes; it does not establish a general fix for every controller-detection problem. Capcom’s RE5 Steam controller FAQ is the official reference.
Resident Evil 6: treat controller support as partial
Steam labels RE6 “Partial Controller Support” and identifies Xbox controllers on its RE6 store listing. This is not a promise that every controller, wireless or wired connection, or remapping configuration will work. If input fails, verify the controller model and connection method, check the game’s available controller settings, and consult current game-specific guidance rather than assuming RE5’s menu path or a community fix applies.

PCGamingWiki also documents controller remapping for both titles: see its community-maintained pages for RE5 and RE6. These pages can help identify options, but they are not Capcom guarantees.
Check video settings before adding a fix
For a display problem or a performance concern, inspect the game’s in-game video settings first. PCGamingWiki records video settings for both games on the RE5 and RE6 pages. The available evidence does not establish one best setting combination for all current PCs, displays, or game builds, so change settings in response to a specific symptom and check the result in the affected game.

RE6 transition slowdowns
PCGamingWiki reports that RE6 can produce a brief heavy CPU load during some menu, alt-tab, and loading transitions, lasting about five seconds. This is a community-reference observation, not a universal benchmark or proof that every short slowdown has the same cause. If the slowdown is brief and occurs at one of those transitions, note when it happens before treating it as sustained poor performance. The RE6 PCGamingWiki page records the observation and related display options.
When to consider community fixes

- RE6: PCGamingWiki lists display-related fix options. Check the current instructions on the RE6 page and confirm they apply to your build and symptom before making changes.
Do not install a tool simply because its name appears in a troubleshooting list. Confirm that its instructions match your game and version, and keep track of changes so you can reverse them if the result is worse. The references do not establish a single fix sequence that works across all combinations of store build, Windows version, controller, and display.
