Capcom has announced Switch 2 versions of all three remakes. Their announced digital release date is October 16, 2026; as of October 13, they are upcoming, not yet available on that date. Capcom France has also announced boxed editions for January 29, 2027.

Which Resident Evil remake should you play first?
Choose based on the characters and point in the story that appeal to you, rather than treating the three games as a required checklist. The official plot summaries establish a useful path: Resident Evil 2 introduces the Raccoon City disaster and Leon; Resident Evil 3 follows Jill during the Raccoon City Incident; and Resident Evil 4 takes Leon to a new mission six years later.
- Best default for a newcomer: Resident Evil 2. It is the clearest entry into the outbreak setting and the start of Leon’s story in this trio.
- Choose Resident Evil 3 first if Jill is the main attraction. Its premise centers on Jill Valentine and Nemesis in the Raccoon City Incident.
- Choose Resident Evil 4 first if the later rescue mission appeals most. It follows Leon six years after the incident, in a European village.
That recommendation is an editorial reading of the published story setups, not an official ranking from Capcom or Nintendo. The announced games do not come with a required play order in the information available here.

A quick way to make the choice is to ask which premise you want to spend time with first. If the outbreak itself and two characters caught in it sound most compelling, pick RE2. If you want Jill’s perspective and the threat of Nemesis, pick RE3. If you would rather begin with Leon on a rescue mission far from Raccoon City, pick RE4. None of those preferences makes the other games a wrong choice; they simply point to different entry points in this group.
How the three games differ
| Game | Story and characters | Why it might be your pick |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 | Rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield are caught in a biological disaster in Raccoon City. | You want the outbreak as your starting point, or want to begin Leon’s story before his later mission. |
| Resident Evil 3 | Jill Valentine, a S.T.A.R.S. survivor, faces the beginning and end of the Raccoon City Incident while Nemesis pursues her. | You are most interested in Jill, Nemesis, or another perspective on the same city incident. |
| Resident Evil 4 | Six years after the Raccoon City Incident, Leon is sent to rescue the U.S. president’s daughter in a European village. | You prefer the later Leon story and its rescue premise over starting with the Raccoon City outbreak. |
The core contrast is between two stories tied to the Raccoon City Incident and a later story that moves Leon to a different setting and objective. RE2 pairs Leon with Claire as they are caught in the city’s biological disaster. RE3 shifts the focus to Jill and Nemesis, with the official description framing her story around the beginning and end of the incident. RE4 then gives Leon a mission six years later: finding the U.S. president’s daughter in a European village.
That makes the trio useful to compare by protagonist, setting, and point in the story—not by unverified claims about which one is longest, scariest, or most action-heavy. The official Switch 2 descriptions establish those story differences, but they do not provide comparative play-time figures or a verified gameplay ranking.

Should you play Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 first?
For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2. Both games are tied to the Raccoon City Incident, but the official summaries give them different central characters: Resident Evil 2 introduces Leon and Claire amid the city’s biological disaster, while Resident Evil 3 puts Jill and Nemesis at the center. Playing Resident Evil 2 first gives you the outbreak context before you follow Jill’s side of the incident.
If your interest is specifically Jill’s story, starting with Resident Evil 3 is also reasonable. The available summaries establish the shared setting but do not prescribe a mandatory sequence between these two games. You do not need to treat the recommendation as a rule that overrides the character you most want to follow.

There is an important limit to what a simple numbered order can say here: the cited story setups do not give a scene-by-scene chronology between RE2 and RE3. They place both within the Raccoon City Incident and establish the characters and broad premises, but they do not justify claims about exactly when every event happens relative to every other one. Treat RE2 then RE3 as a practical newcomer route for context, not as a precise timeline guide.
Can you start with Resident Evil 4?
Yes, if its premise is the one you want to play. Resident Evil 4 is set six years after the Raccoon City Incident and follows Leon on a mission to rescue the U.S. president’s daughter. It has a different setting and immediate objective from the two Raccoon City games, so it can be the most appealing first choice even if you have not played the other two.
There is a story reason to play Resident Evil 2 before it: both feature Leon, and Resident Evil 2 is where his story begins in this group. That makes RE2 then RE4 a sensible sequence if Leon’s progression matters to you. The official summaries alone do not establish how much prior knowledge RE4 assumes, so this is a continuity recommendation rather than a claim that RE4 cannot be understood on its own.
Think of RE4 as the option for someone drawn to the later chapter rather than the outbreak’s beginning. Its six-year gap, European village setting, and rescue objective make it distinct from the two Raccoon City premises. If those are what prompted your interest in this trilogy, there is no story-based reason in the announced summaries that says you must postpone it; just understand that playing RE2 first gives you the earlier Leon setup.
What order should you play all three in?
If you want to play the whole announced trio and prioritize the story setups, a practical order is:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Resident Evil 2 for the Raccoon City outbreak and Leon and Claire’s introduction.
- Resident Evil 3 for Jill’s perspective on the Raccoon City Incident and Nemesis’s pursuit.
- Resident Evil 4 for Leon’s mission six years after the incident.
This order is a recommendation based on the official premises and stated chronology, not a publisher-mandated sequence. The official summaries do not specify the precise event-by-event chronology between Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, so the suggested order should not be read as a claim about every scene’s timing.

If you are buying one game at a time, you can make the same choice by priority: RE2 first for a broad starting point, RE3 first for Jill, or RE4 first for the later Leon mission. If you already know you want to play all three, the suggested route connects the outbreak-era stories before moving to Leon’s later assignment. It is a useful way to organize the stories, not a requirement imposed by the Switch 2 releases.
Switch 2 release dates and editions
Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal announcement on September 10, 2026, confirmed the three remakes for Nintendo Switch 2 and announced digital releases for October 16, 2026. That date is three days after October 13, 2026, so the games should be described as upcoming as of that date. Capcom France’s announcement gives January 29, 2027, as the planned date for boxed editions. These are announced dates, not confirmation that a game is already available in a particular country’s store or at a particular retailer.
| Game | Switch 2 edition name in cited listings | Announced format timing |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 | Deluxe Edition, in the Nintendo UK listing | Digital October 16, 2026; boxed editions planned for January 29, 2027 |
| Resident Evil 3 | Listed without a comparable Deluxe or Gold subtitle in the cited Switch 2 materials | Digital October 16, 2026; boxed editions planned for January 29, 2027 |
| Resident Evil 4 | Gold Edition, identified in Capcom’s announcement | Digital October 16, 2026; boxed editions planned for January 29, 2027 |
The edition names come from different official materials, and the RE2 listing cited is specifically Nintendo UK. They do not establish that all territories use the same names, contents, or formats. Check the listing for your region before choosing an edition, particularly if a subtitle or included content matters to your purchase. No price, retailer stock, or territory-wide availability is established by the announcement details above.
If you prefer a digital purchase, the announced date is October 16, 2026. If you prefer a boxed copy, the announced plan is later: January 29, 2027. Those two dates are useful for deciding whether to wait for a physical release, but they do not tell you what either format will cost or whether a specific local retailer will have it. The official date announcements should not be treated as a live inventory or pricing check.

There is also a difference between an edition label and a confirmed feature comparison. The cited materials identify RE2 as Deluxe Edition in Nintendo UK’s listing and RE4 as Gold Edition in Capcom’s announcement, while the cited Switch 2 material lists RE3 without a comparable Deluxe or Gold subtitle. That naming alone does not establish what each version includes, whether editions are named the same way in every market, or which is the best value. Verify the local product page and its contents before purchasing.

The official descriptions support a comparison of protagonists, story setups, setting, and release information. They do not establish which Switch 2 version performs best, which game is scariest, how long each takes to finish, or which is most action-heavy. Those are different questions that require evidence about the Switch 2 versions themselves; story summaries are not a sound basis for presenting them as verified facts.
For the same reason, there is no supported price comparison here, no retailer stock confirmation, and no verified review score or performance measure to use as a tie-breaker. A sensible choice from the information announced so far is therefore a story choice: the outbreak and Leon and Claire in RE2, Jill and Nemesis in RE3, or Leon’s later rescue mission in RE4. For a newcomer without a strong character preference, RE2 remains the most straightforward starting point.
Capcom announced the digital release date and its France announcement supplied the planned boxed date, while Nintendo UK’s listing supplies the RE2 Deluxe Edition name. Those details answer the basics of what is coming and when, but regional listings can differ. Before making a purchase, check your country’s store for the current date, edition name, format, price, and included content. That is especially important if you are choosing based on a particular edition label rather than the story premise.

Which Resident Evil remake should a newcomer play first on Switch 2?

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Should I play Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3 first?
Start with Resident Evil 2 if you want the outbreak context and the introduction of Leon and Claire. Choose Resident Evil 3 first if Jill Valentine and Nemesis are your main draw. The published summaries do not prescribe a mandatory order or give a precise scene-by-scene chronology between them.
Can I play Resident Evil 4 before Resident Evil 2?
Yes. Resident Evil 4 follows Leon six years after the Raccoon City Incident and centers on a rescue mission in a European village. Playing RE2 first provides Leon’s earlier story in this group, but the official summaries do not say RE4 requires prior knowledge.
When do the Resident Evil remakes arrive on Switch 2?
Capcom announced a digital release date of October 16, 2026. Capcom France announced January 29, 2027, as the planned date for boxed editions. Check your local store for territory-specific availability and current status.
How much do the Switch 2 versions cost, and what do the editions include?
The cited announcements and listings do not establish prices or a full comparison of edition contents. They identify RE2 as Deluxe Edition in Nintendo UK’s listing and RE4 as Gold Edition in Capcom’s announcement; RE3 is listed without a comparable Deluxe or Gold subtitle in the cited Switch 2 materials. Check the product listing for your region before buying.
Which Switch 2 version is the scariest, longest, or best-performing?
The official story descriptions do not establish which game is scariest or longest, or how the Switch 2 versions perform. Those comparisons require evidence beyond the announced premises and release details.
The Bottom Line
For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2: it introduces the Raccoon City outbreak and Leon’s story. Pick Resident Evil 3 first for Jill and Nemesis, or Resident Evil 4 for Leon’s later rescue mission. The announced Switch 2 digital date is October 16, 2026, with boxed editions planned for January 29, 2027; check your regional listing for current availability, edition contents, and price.
