Which Resident Evil game should you play first on Switch 2?
Choose based on what you want from your first game, not on a rule that every entry must be played in release order. Nintendo Japan presents Resident Evil Requiem as a suitable starting point for newcomers, while the two Ethan Winters games have a clear story sequence: Resident Evil 7 biohazard, then Resident Evil Village. Nintendo says the games can be enjoyed regardless of which is played first, so choosing Requiem does not require you to buy or finish earlier entries.

The main practical difference is the experience each option emphasizes. Requiem alternates between Grace Ashcroft’s horror-focused sections and Leon S. Kennedy’s action-focused sections. That contrast gives a new player both styles in one game. If what matters most is following Ethan’s personal story from its beginning, choose the two-game sequence instead.

| Resident Evil Requiem | A newcomer who wants one game | Its story stands independently; it has multiple difficulty settings; Nintendo Japan recommends it to series newcomers. It shifts between Grace’s horror-focused sections and Leon’s action-focused sections. | Your region’s rating, languages, and download size. |
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition, then Resident Evil Village Gold Edition | A player who wants Ethan Winters’ story in sequence | Resident Evil 7 starts Ethan’s story, and Village takes place a few years later. When to choose Resident Evil Requiem
Pick Requiem if you want the cleanest single-game entry point on Switch 2. Its independent story means you can begin without first catching up on earlier entries, and Nintendo Japan specifically recommends it to people new to the series. Multiple difficulty settings give you an adjustment to consider if you are uncertain about the challenge, though the available official information does not specify the exact settings or how each changes the game.
One game, two emphases
The game alternates between Grace Ashcroft’s horror-focused sections and Leon S. Kennedy’s action-focused sections. That is useful if you do not yet know which side of the series you prefer: the choice is not between committing to an all-horror or all-action entry, but between two approaches within one game. Do not treat that contrast as a promise that every section will have the same balance or pacing.
This combination also makes Requiem an easy recommendation when you are choosing a first game for someone whose preference is not yet clear. It includes both of the distinct emphases Nintendo identifies, rather than asking you to choose between them before you have tried the series. That is a practical reason to consider it as a one-game introduction, not proof that its sections will appeal equally to every player.

What you need to check in your region
Before buying or downloading, open the local Nintendo store listing for the Switch 2 version. Store details can differ by region, and Nintendo Australia and Nintendo Brazil list different download sizes. Check the listed age rating and content information as well; ratings are jurisdiction-specific, so one country’s listing is not a substitute for your local classification.
Should you play Resident Evil 7 before Village?
If your goal is to follow Ethan Winters’ story, play Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition first and Resident Evil Village Gold Edition second. Nintendo’s store material identifies Resident Evil 7 as the beginning of Ethan’s story, and says Village takes place a few years after its events.
This sequence preserves the stated chronology. It is a preference for story continuity, not a requirement for understanding Requiem: Nintendo Japan says the games can be enjoyed regardless of which is played first and describes Requiem as an independent story. If your Switch 2 library or budget means you are choosing only one title for now, use your priority—Ethan’s sequence or a standalone starting point—to decide.

The distinction matters when you are deciding whether to buy both Ethan games immediately. If chronology is the reason you are interested, the order is clear: begin with Resident Evil 7 and continue with Village. If you mainly want a first taste of the series and are not committed to Ethan’s storyline, the official guidance does not require you to work through those earlier games before Requiem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm what the Gold Editions include
The Switch 2 versions are Gold Editions with additional content, and the Generation Pack also lists add-on content for the first two games. Do not assume that every storefront uses the same presentation of included content. Read the edition details on the store page for your region before purchasing, particularly if you already own a game or add-on separately.
Think of “Gold Edition” and the bundle as separate purchase checks: first confirm that you are looking at the intended Switch 2 edition, then read the local listing’s contents. The official product information establishes that these editions include additional content, but the details presented for the Generation Pack specifically refer to add-on content for the first two games. If a particular add-on matters to you, verify its inclusion by name on the store page rather than assuming every package has identical contents.
When the Generation Pack makes sense
The Generation Pack is the straightforward option if you want Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition, Village Gold Edition, and Requiem together. Its listed scope also includes specified add-on content for the first two games. That gives you the choice to start with Requiem or follow Ethan’s order without buying the games one at a time.
Check your existing library before selecting the bundle. If you already own one of the games or its add-on content, compare the bundle contents against what you have so you do not pay for something twice. The official listing establishes what the package contains, but does not establish whether it is the best-value option in every region or at every moment; check the current local store price and purchase terms yourself.
There is no universal cost comparison to make here: prices, formats, and current offers vary by territory and were not established in the official product information cited here. Compare the live regional price of the bundle with the individual games you actually want, taking account of any games or add-ons already in your library. If you only want one entry, do not assume a three-game package is automatically the right buy just because it contains more titles.

Switch 2 details to check before you buy
Download size and storage
Nintendo Australia lists Resident Evil Requiem at 28.5 GB. Nintendo Brazil’s listing reports 28.7 GB, so neither figure should be treated as a universal download size. Use the store page for your region to plan available console or card storage.
For a digital purchase, storage is a real part of the decision, particularly if you are choosing the Generation Pack or several games rather than just one. The figures above are for Requiem on the respective regional listings; they do not state the combined install size for all three games. Check each product listing and make sure you have enough available space before beginning a download.
Languages and play modes
Nintendo Australia lists 12 supported languages for Requiem: Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, English, and Polish. It also lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play, with one local player. Verify the language listing in your own region if a specific language matters to you.

Its support for TV, tabletop, and handheld modes does mean you can choose among those Switch 2 play styles. If you are buying for someone who needs a particular language or wants to play in a particular mode, confirm those details on the relevant regional listing before checkout.
Rating and content notice
The Australian store listing identifies high-impact horror violence, blood and gore, and in-game purchases. That is content information for the Australian listing, not a universal age rating. Check the classification and content descriptors issued for your jurisdiction before buying for yourself or another player.
Release and update information
Resident Evil Requiem has a listed release date of 27 February 2026 on Nintendo Australia’s store page. Nintendo Japan’s article for launch day, 27 February 2026, reported version 1.1.0 as the Day 1 update and instructed players to apply it. That is a dated launch note, not a claim about the latest version today; check the game’s update screen for current update information.

If you are installing the game around launch or setting up a new console, do not confuse that Day 1 version number with a guarantee that version 1.1.0 is still current. Follow the game’s update prompt or check its update screen. The relevant practical point in Nintendo Japan’s launch notice is to apply the available update, while the current version can change over time.
Optional themed hardware
Nintendo Japan also confirms a themed Requiem Pro Controller edition. It is an optional accessory, not a requirement for playing the game. Treat it as a separate preference and purchase decision rather than part of the minimum setup; the official guidance about the game’s entry point does not depend on owning themed hardware.
Can you play older Switch Resident Evil games on Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible Nintendo Switch games, but some games may not be supported or fully compatible. Its general compatibility guidance does not establish the result for every specific Resident Evil edition. If you are buying specifically for Switch 2, select the Switch 2 listing. If you already own an older Switch copy and plan to rely on it, check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for that exact edition before assuming it will work as expected.
That distinction is useful if you already have a Switch library: general backward-compatibility guidance is not the same as a verified compatibility result for a particular game or edition. Look up the exact older title you own in Nintendo’s current compatibility information. If you do not want to depend on that check, purchase the product page explicitly marked for Switch 2 instead.
