To reset a Canon camera’s main battery, turn the camera off, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, then reinstall it and test the camera. Canon recommends this general troubleshooting step for a camera that is not working properly. A backup/date-time battery is different: removing it can clear camera settings, so do not do that for a routine battery reseat. Battery compatibility, charging steps, and backup-cell access depend on the exact camera model.
How to reseat a Canon camera battery safely
- Turn the camera off. Remove the main battery according to the handling instructions in your camera’s manual.
- Wait 30 seconds. Canon USA Support specifies this interval before reinserting the battery in its general troubleshooting guidance: Batteries may need to be recharged or replaced.
- Reinstall the battery and turn on the camera. If it starts normally, check whether the original issue returns.
- If the camera still fails, charge the battery using the charger and procedure specified for your model, then retry. Do not assume a battery or charger that fits another Canon camera is compatible.
This is a low-impact reseat, not a factory reset. Canon says removing a camera’s backup/date-time battery as well can cause a full reset and clear settings, including the date and time. Not every Canon camera has a user-removable backup battery; consult the exact model’s manual for whether it exists and how it is accessed.

If the camera will not turn on
Start with the main-battery reseat, then charge the battery with the correct equipment for your camera. If there is still no power, test only with a battery whose compatibility is confirmed by the camera manual. A depleted or failing battery, a charger issue, or a camera fault can produce similar symptoms; a reseat alone cannot distinguish them.
Canon’s general guidance is that an error persisting after recharge may mean the battery needs replacement or the camera needs a service evaluation. Follow the troubleshooting section for your model, and seek service if its recommended steps do not resolve the problem.

If the battery will not charge
Charging behavior and indicator meanings differ by camera, battery family, and charger. Check the manual for your exact model before trying a charging procedure. Canon’s EOS guides illustrate why: the EOS R7 lists LP-E6P, LP-E6NH, LP-E6N, and LP-E6 battery packs, while the EOS R50 specifies LP-E17. These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable or universal Canon recommendations.
- Check compatibility: use the battery types listed for your camera. For example, Canon specifies the genuine LP-E6P for the EOS R5 Mark II.
- Read the charger indicator in context: on the EOS R7, a rapidly blinking orange lamp indicates a protection stop that may involve a battery or charger problem or failed communication. The guide says to unplug, reseat the battery, wait a few minutes, and reconnect.
- Consider temperature: the EOS R7 guide notes that a hot or cold battery may not charge until it adjusts to ambient temperature. This advice is specific to that model’s guidance; consult your own manual for its instructions.
- Stop if the problem persists: repeated protection indicators or charging failure call for model-specific troubleshooting or service rather than repeated resets.
See Canon’s official troubleshooting guides for the EOS R7, EOS R50, and EOS R5 Mark II. Their examples should not be used to infer compatibility for another Canon camera.

If the camera keeps asking for the date and time
Set the date and time in the camera menu using the instructions for your model. A recurring prompt can indicate that the date/time backup power has run down; it does not by itself mean the main battery needs resetting. Canon’s date-and-time support page says that, for the camera behavior covered there, settings may be retained for about three weeks after the main pack is removed, and the built-in date/time battery may take about four hours to charge with a charged main pack inserted or the specified AC adapter kit connected while the camera is off. Those figures come from Canon’s page last updated in 2014 and should not be generalized to every Canon model.
If the prompt returns after resetting the date and time, consult your model’s manual or Canon service guidance. Do not open the camera or remove a backup battery unless the manual explicitly describes a user-accessible procedure. Canon’s references include Setting or Changing the Date and Time and Canon India’s Setting the Date and Time; menu paths and procedures can vary by model and region.

What a battery reset does—and does not do
Removing and reinstalling the main battery briefly interrupts its connection to the camera; it is a sensible first check for an unresponsive or erratic camera. It does not guarantee a fix for a depleted battery, incompatible pack, charging fault, or camera malfunction. Removing a backup/date-time battery is a separate, more consequential action because it can clear settings, and its availability and access are model-dependent.
