HTTP 200: Why a Successful Response Can Still Leave a Page Blank

A 200 status confirms a successful HTTP response—not a complete page. Learn how to inspect rendered content, diagnose JavaScript failures, and handle missing routes.

HTTP 200 confirms that a server returned a successful response; it does not confirm that a browser displayed a complete page or that Google successfully rendered its content. Those are separate checks. A page may return 200 while its JavaScript fails, its content never appears, or its client-side app displays an error. To diagnose it, inspect both the HTTP response and the page after rendering.

What HTTP 200 tells you—and what it does not

The 200 status code describes the server’s response to an HTTP request. It is not a visual check, a guarantee that the response contains meaningful content, or proof that JavaScript ran successfully. A browser can receive a successful response and still show a blank, incomplete, or error view.

For Google Search, crawling, rendering, and indexing are distinct stages. Google Search Central explains that Googlebot queues pages with a 200 status for rendering unless a robots meta tag or header tells Google not to index them. The page can remain in that queue for a few seconds or longer. When resources permit, Google uses headless Chromium to render the page and execute JavaScript; the rendered HTML is then used for indexing. Google’s JavaScript SEO documentation describes this process. It is specific to Google Search, not a guarantee about every browser or crawler.

Why a page can return 200 but appear blank or incomplete

JavaScript supplies the page content

Some sites send an app shell: the initial HTML contains little or none of the page’s actual content, which is added only after JavaScript executes. If a required script does not run, or a needed resource cannot load, the content may never appear. A 200 response for the initial document does not prove that the later rendering step succeeded.

The application shows an error without an HTTP error status

A single-page app may handle a missing route inside the browser and still return 200 from the server. That can leave users looking at an application-level error while crawlers see a successful HTTP response. Google may treat a blank or error page that returns 200 as a soft 404—a page that appears to be missing even though its status says otherwise. Google’s soft 404 guidance explains the issue.

How to check what actually rendered

  1. Check the response. Confirm the requested URL’s HTTP status and inspect the response body or initial HTML. This establishes what the server sent, not what JavaScript later produced.
  2. Compare initial HTML with the rendered page. In a browser, inspect the page after scripts have run and verify that the expected text and interface are present. For Google Search, use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to test the specific URL and inspect its rendered output.
  3. Look for failed scripts and resources. Check the browser’s developer console for JavaScript exceptions and its network panel for missing, blocked, slow, or failed requests. Google’s URL Inspection and Rich Results Test can expose rendered-page details, resource information, and JavaScript console output or exceptions. See Google’s JavaScript SEO troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Check whether the rendered page is genuinely an error. If it is blank or nearly blank, shows a prominent error, or depends on critical resources that fail to load, investigate those causes before treating the 200 as evidence that the route works.

How to handle a missing client-side route

If the route does not exist, make its response reflect that instead of returning a successful status with an error view. Google documents two approaches for client-side errors: route the user to a URL that returns a 404, or add a robots noindex tag to the error page. A server response with the appropriate 404 status is the clearer signal that the requested resource is missing; a noindex tag is an alternative for preventing the error view from being indexed. See Google’s guidance on JavaScript-generated error pages.

If the route should exist, do not mask the problem with a not-found response. Check whether the content appears in rendered output and whether the scripts or other resources it requires load successfully.

When to render content on the server

Server-side rendering or pre-rendering can put useful page content in the initial response rather than making it depend entirely on client-side JavaScript. Google recommends these approaches as ways to make sites faster for users and crawlers, and notes that not all bots can execute JavaScript. Consider them when important content needs to be available earlier, when the intended crawlers may not run scripts, or when client-side rendering is unreliable.

The trade-off is implementation and maintenance: server-side or pre-rendered output must stay aligned with client-side behavior and hydration, while a client-rendered app depends on scripts executing successfully before its content is available. Choose based on the audience’s rendering capabilities, the need for useful initial HTML, performance, and the effort required to keep both rendering paths correct.
