That requires repository-context retrieval; collecting completion statistics is a separate activity that helps you evaluate results. To tell whether repository-aware completion helps, measure suggestion use and task correctness separately.
What repository-aware code completion does
A conventional completion system can draw on the code around your cursor. Repository-aware systems may also retrieve relevant material from other files—such as function definitions, symbols, modules, or similar snippets—and supply it as context. That can help a model follow project-specific abstractions and conventions, but the system has to select useful context rather than simply send everything. More retrieval can add indexing and latency constraints.

Research systems illustrate different ways of selecting context. REPOFUSE describes combining analogy context with rationale context, while ContextModule discusses similar snippets, important symbol definitions, and code based on user behavior. These are research designs, not proof that every commercial assistant works the same way. The distinction matters: a repository’s statistics do not, by themselves, give a completion model access to repository code.
How repository context is provided
GitHub Copilot in repository context
GitHub documents semantic indexing for repository-context features and says an up-to-date index helps Copilot answer questions and complete tasks in repository context. For local or non-GitHub repositories in VS Code, GitHub says workspace data is uploaded to GitHub to make it searchable. That indexing path is limited to GitHub.com; organizations on Business or Enterprise need the relevant policy enabled. GitHub also documents content-exclusion controls for Business and Enterprise. Check the current repository indexing and context documentation and your organization’s policy before enabling it; do not assume workspace data stays local.

Sourcegraph describes Cody context sources that include keyword search, Sourcegraph Search, and code-graph analysis. Its autocomplete documentation describes single- and multi-line suggestions informed by code context, along with supported editor extensions and enterprise configuration. These are vendor descriptions of features, not independent comparisons showing which assistant retrieves context best. Consult the current Cody context documentation and autocomplete documentation for availability and setup details.
Decide what “better” means before measuring
Different measures answer different questions. Acceptance can show whether suggestions are being used; it does not establish that accepted code is correct, follows project conventions, or makes developers more productive. Define the outcome and the counting rule before comparing tools or configurations.

- Suggestion acceptance: Count suggestions shown and accepted, and state exactly what qualifies as an acceptance.
- Implementation quality: Check task-specific correctness with tests, code review, or other relevant validation.
- Time to complete: Record task time under consistent conditions; do not infer time savings from acceptance rates alone.
- Convention fit: Review whether generated code uses the repository’s established interfaces and patterns.
- Responsiveness: Measure latency consistently, such as from the same typing event to suggestion availability.
Use usage dashboards carefully
GitHub documents code-completion acceptance rate as the percentage of suggestions accepted, with reporting at enterprise or organization scope and repository-level or individual-user granularities. The documented acceptance activity can also include applying a chat response or copying a code block, not only accepting inline completion. If the question is specifically whether inline suggestions are useful, select a metric that isolates inline activity where available and state the provider’s definition. See GitHub’s usage metrics definitions before interpreting a dashboard figure.
Run a small, repeatable comparison
- Choose a fixed set of representative tasks in the same repository.
- Keep the editor, language, task instructions, and relevant configuration consistent across runs.
- For each run, record suggestions shown and accepted using a declared rule, plus task-level correctness.
- If latency matters, time the same interval from prompt or typing event to suggestion availability.
- Compare results by task and metric; avoid combining acceptance, correctness, and productivity into one unsupported claim.
What published figures can—and cannot—show
REPOFUSE authors reported a 40.90% to 59.75% increase in exact-match accuracy against existing models on CrossCodeEval for their method, and a 26.8% inference-speed enhancement in their evaluation. These are paper-specific results on the reported method and benchmark, not expected gains for an arbitrary repository or a guarantee of improved developer productivity. Sourcegraph’s autocomplete documentation reports an improvement of more than 4% in average completion acceptance rate and a 350 ms reduction in P75 latency. Those are vendor-reported product figures; the latency comparison context is not fully specified in the documentation excerpt, so neither figure should be treated as an independent, generally applicable benchmark. Choose a setup by the questions that matter to your team
- Context coverage: Determine whether the tool uses only the active file or can retrieve repository search results, symbols, related snippets, or code-graph information.
- Responsiveness: Test whether retrieval delays suggestions on your actual repository and editor.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your editor, repository host, subscription, and organization policy.
- Data handling: Establish what is uploaded or indexed, what can be excluded, and which policies govern access.
- Evaluation fit: Match each reported metric to the question it answers; acceptance is not code correctness, and neither alone proves productivity.
