You can replace a Surface Pro battery yourself only if you have the exact battery for your model, the model’s own service guide, the adhesive and tools that guide calls for, and a workspace that meets Microsoft’s battery-safety requirements. Most Surface Pro battery jobs require opening a display that is bonded in place, and a built-in lithium-ion battery carries fire and injury risk if it is damaged or installed incorrectly. If any of those conditions is missing, an authorized repair service is the safer route.
Start with your exact Surface Pro model
The procedure, parts list and tool set depend on the generation and variant. Microsoft’s Surface Service Guide Center lists separate guides for each named model, including Pro 7/7+, Pro 8, Pro 9, Pro 11th Edition, Pro 10 for Business, and the Pro 12-inch and 13-inch variants, and each guide covers disassembly, reassembly and repair. The list itself is not a compatibility chart, so a battery, adhesive or tool that fits one generation should never be assumed to fit another.

Confirm the battery is the problem
Microsoft’s support article How to check the battery capacity of your Surface explains how to check capacity and view replacement options. Run that check first, because it tells you more than symptoms do.
Several symptoms commonly prompt a battery replacement. The Pro 8 guide lists these as possible signs that replacement may be due:
- The battery no longer holds a charge.
- The device shuts down unexpectedly.
- The device needs to be charged more and more often.
These symptoms are reasons to investigate, not a diagnosis. A failing charger, a software power setting, a worn cable or a fault elsewhere can produce the same behavior, so confirm with the capacity check before opening the device.

Safety requirements before you open anything
Microsoft’s Repair Safety Guidelines – Surface treat the built-in lithium-ion battery as a hazard during replacement. Incompatible or modified batteries, improper installation and improper handling can cause overheating, expansion, venting, leakage or a thermal event, with consequences that include fire, injury, death, data loss and property damage. Before you start, the guidelines call for:

- Battery Condition: Brand New; Voltage: 7.57V; Capacity: 45Wh 5940mAh
- Replacement Part Number: G3HTA038H / DYNM02 2(1ICP4/52/108+1ICP4/45/114)-2.
- Compatible Models: for Microsoft Surface Pro (5th Gen, 1796, 2017) ; Surface Pro 5 (2017); Surface Pro 1796; Surface Pro FJU-00001 FKG-00001 FKJ-00001 LJJ-00001 ; Surface Pro 5 Core i5 i7 m3 ; Surface Pro 6 (Model 1807/1809/1796, 2018) KJT-00015 KJU-00015.
- Grade A cells mitigate the risk of battery leakage and maximize output stability. Built-in circuit protection, enhances safety of usage and extends battery life
- Note 1: In order to find the right model, please open the back case of your laptop and check the model number of your original battery. When using the new battery, discharge it to 5% (not 0%) and then charge it to 95%. Repeat this cycle 3-4 times
- Genuine Microsoft parts, available from Microsoft or from authorized partners such as iFixit. Do not use a reused, non-genuine or modified battery.
- A workspace free of flammable debris.
- Adequate ventilation.
- An appropriate fire suppressant within reach, or a fireproof enclosure within 20 feet of the work area.
The model guides add their own preparation steps. The Surface Pro 5 and Surface Pro 8 iFixit guides recommend reducing the battery charge below 25% before disassembly. The Surface Pro 8 guide also says to shut the device down and disconnect cables first. Apply these only to the model whose guide says them.
Never puncture, bend, crush or keep using a damaged or swollen battery. Microsoft’s safety guidance describes the hazard but does not provide a complete consumer disposal procedure, so take a damaged battery to a local battery recycling or hazardous-waste point and follow your area’s rules.
Display access is the main repair risk
On most Surface Pro models the battery is reached through the display, and the display is the part most likely to be damaged. Each model’s approach differs, so read the section that matches your device.

Surface Pro 7
The iFixit Pro 7 guide warns of a significant chance of screen damage. It also describes removing the motherboard as an optional step to protect the screen while you access the battery. Weigh that option against the extra disassembly it adds.
Surface Pro 8
The Pro 8 guide involves opening the display and replacing the screen adhesive. Plan for new adhesive and thermal materials before you start, because reassembly depends on them.
Surface Pro 12-inch
Microsoft’s official Surface Pro 12-in procedure specifies a Surface Display Debonding Tool, a bonding frame, ESD-safe equipment and other specialized tools. This is the most equipment-heavy path described here, and it is not a job for a basic toolkit.
Parts and tools to gather
- A battery confirmed for your exact model and variant. Do not buy a generic “Surface Pro battery” and assume it is compatible.
- The adhesive the guide calls for. The Pro 5 guide calls for replacement battery adhesive. The Pro 8 guide calls for replacement screen adhesive and thermal materials.
- Opening tools. Opening picks and a spudger are common across the guides. The first-generation guide also lists an iOpener and Torx drivers. Use the drivers your own guide names.
- Specialized display tools and ESD protection for newer procedures, such as the debonding tool and bonding frame in the Pro 12-inch procedure.
Do not assume the tools for one model cover another. Check each item against the guide for your model before you buy it.

DIY or authorized repair
The two realistic routes are a do-it-yourself replacement or a professional repair through an authorized provider. Compare them on the points that matter most for your device:
| Factor | DIY replacement | Authorized repair service |
|---|---|---|
| Access to the exact compatible battery and model guide | You must source the correct battery and read the model guide yourself | The provider handles sourcing; availability for your model is not stated here |
| Display damage risk and tools | Risk is real on models that require prying the display; specialized tools may be needed | The provider carries the tools and bears the handling risk |
| Meeting Microsoft’s battery-safety workspace requirements | You must provide the workspace, ventilation and fire suppressant or enclosure | The provider’s workspace is not described in the sources cited here |
| Local parts and service availability | Depends on your country; check the part and retailer for your model | Depends on your region; check the provider’s current coverage |
| Total cost | Battery, adhesive and tools; current prices are not stated here | Repair fee plus parts; current prices are not stated here |
Choose DIY only if you can meet every requirement in the safety section, have the correct battery and adhesive, and are prepared to risk the display. If the display is damaged, the repair becomes more expensive, so factor that into the decision.
Preparation sequence
- Identify your exact Surface Pro generation and variant from the device and the Microsoft service guide list.
- Open the Microsoft service guide or the model-specific iFixit guide for that exact model, and read the whole safety and disassembly section before ordering parts.
- Run the battery capacity check described in Microsoft’s support article.
- Order the battery, adhesive, thermal materials and tools that your model’s guide lists.
- Prepare a workspace free of flammable debris with ventilation and a fire suppressant within reach or a fireproof enclosure within 20 feet.
- If your guide says so, reduce the battery charge below 25% and shut the device down with cables disconnected.
Replacement time and difficulty vary by model, so no single time estimate applies to every Surface Pro. Part numbers, prices and regional repair availability also change, and this article does not list them. Confirm them for your model and country before you buy.
