Self-hosting your files is worth it if you want control over where your data lives and you accept that you become the administrator. It is not worth it if you want Google Drive’s convenience without any upkeep. The two main platforms, Nextcloud and ownCloud, both document self-hosted file sync and sharing. Neither removes the work of running a server, and the encryption they offer has limits you should understand before you move anything.
This guide doesn’t claim a personal migration story. It sets out what the official documentation says, where the trade-offs are, and how to decide whether the freedom is worth the effort for your own workflow.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat “self-hosted” actually changes
Drive is a service: Google runs the servers, updates, storage and recovery. A self-hosted platform is software you install on a server that you operate or arrange. The server may be a machine at home or a rented virtual or managed server. The documentation for these platforms doesn’t set a hardware requirement or recommend a specific device, so a NAS is one option and not a prerequisite. Where the server runs is your decision, and it determines who is responsible for uptime, patching and disk failure.
The realistic candidates
Nextcloud
Nextcloud’s user manual describes a desktop sync client for Windows, macOS and Linux. You copy files into a local synced folder, and changes synchronize across your devices. Mobile clients exist for Android and iOS. Nextcloud also documents sharing directly with users on other Nextcloud, ownCloud or Pydio servers (federation) and presents broader collaboration features.

- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
ownCloud
ownCloud’s official guide describes it as a self-hosted file-sync and sharing solution. Users synchronize local shared directories with the server through desktop and mobile clients. It is a legitimate alternative, but the documentation reviewed doesn’t show it is better or worse than Nextcloud on any particular feature. A community thread asking whether Nextcloud is “still the go to for a Google Drive replacement” shows how readers frame the question. It is not evidence of market share.
Sync behavior: check this against your habits
The Nextcloud manual’s page on desktop and mobile synchronization carries a warning: “Unfortunately, 2-way-sync, a.k.a bidirectional sync, isn’t fully implemented in the Android client yet.” If you edit the same files from an Android phone and expect them to stay mirrored the way Drive’s offline folders do, test that specific case. App behavior changes between releases, so confirm against the current manual.

Access, back up, organize, and share data across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, web browsers, and compatible smart TVs—ideal for creators and advanced home users working across multiple devices.
Desktop sync is the better-documented path. If most of your work happens on a laptop and the phone is mainly for photo or document upload, the gap matters less.
Sharing and collaboration
Basic file sharing and federation are documented. That doesn’t mean every Drive workflow carries over unchanged. Co-editing documents, link permissions for non-technical recipients and comment workflows are the areas to try with real collaborators before you commit. Anyone you share with needs a link or account that works from outside your network, and for a home server that is a setup task you own.

Encryption: the boundary people miss
Nextcloud’s administration manual describes server-side encryption as protecting files on remote storage. It states that this feature does not provide client-side encryption. In practice, the server still handles your data in a form it can decrypt, so server-side encryption protects against some storage-level exposure, not against a compromised or untrusted server. If your threat model requires that the server never sees plaintext, server-side encryption alone doesn’t meet it.

Encryption also adds a failure mode. The manual advises regular backups of the encryption keys, because losing them can mean permanent data loss. Self-hosting does not make you automatically more secure than Google. It moves security from a large provider’s team to you.

The work you take on
- Updates: you apply server and app updates, and you decide how quickly.
- Access: you decide what is exposed to the internet and who can reach it.
- Backups: a synced copy is not a backup, because a deletion or corruption syncs too. Keep a separate backup of files, configuration and any encryption keys.
- Recovery: know how you would restore if the disk or hosting account fails, before it does.
Is it worth it for you?
| If this describes you | Self-hosting fit |
|---|---|
| You mostly sync files between a laptop and a phone for upload | Good fit; test Android behavior first |
| You co-edit documents with many outside collaborators daily | Trial with real collaborators before leaving Drive |
| You need the server unable to read your files | Server-side encryption alone is not enough |
| You don’t want to patch or monitor anything | Poor fit at home; consider managed hosting |
| You want data location and ownership under your control | The main reason to do it |
A low-risk way to find out
- Pick the platform and decide where the server will run.
- Move a non-critical folder and keep Drive as the master copy.
- Test desktop sync, phone upload, and one real share with an outside person.
- Set up a separate backup and do a test restore.
- Migrate more only once the backup and restore work.
The freedom is real: control over location, access and retention. It is worth it only if you will do the maintenance, and no documentation proves it is the right choice for everyone.
