Yes. You can replace a TrueHD track in an MKV with AC-3 while leaving the video untouched. The key is to encode the audio—not use passthrough—and to select the intended tracks explicitly. FFmpeg gives you detailed stream control; HandBrake offers a graphical workflow.
What changes when you convert TrueHD to AC-3?
TrueHD audio must be decoded and re-encoded to create an AC-3 track. That conversion is lossy, so the AC-3 file will not be a bit-for-bit copy of the original. If you use FFmpeg with video stream copy, the video is not re-encoded, avoiding video quality loss and the processing that a video encode would require.

Passthrough is different: it copies the existing audio stream as-is. Selecting TrueHD passthrough will not turn it into AC-3. HandBrake lists AC-3 encoding and TrueHD passthrough as distinct choices in its audio codec documentation.

Choose a workflow: FFmpeg or HandBrake
| Tool | Best suited to | What to control |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Explicit control over streams and codecs | Map the intended video and audio streams, copy video, and encode audio as AC-3. Choose whether to include subtitles and other tracks. |
| HandBrake | A graphical workflow | Choose MKV output, select the intended audio track, and set its encoder to AC-3 rather than passthrough. |
FFmpeg documents its audio codecs and stream-selection options in its general documentation and command-line documentation. HandBrake documents its container support, including MKV workflows. A container accepting a codec does not mean every television, player, or receiver can decode or pass it through.

Convert the audio with FFmpeg
Inspect the file and identify the intended tracks
Before converting, check which video, audio, subtitle, and other streams the file contains. Track order varies, and a file may have multiple audio tracks or languages; do not assume the first audio stream is the one you want. Use the stream listing to identify the video and the desired audio, then adapt the mapping accordingly.
Encode the selected audio and copy the video
After identifying the streams, adapt this command pattern. The example maps the first video stream, the first audio stream, and any subtitle streams; it encodes audio as AC-3 and copies video and subtitles:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -map 0:s? -c:v copy -c:a ac3 -c:s copy output.mkv
Replace input.mkv and output.mkv with your filenames. Adjust 0:a:0 if inspection shows the desired audio is another stream. The example does not keep the original TrueHD as an additional track, and it does not include every other input stream. Subtitle copying may not suit every file or playback setup, so check the resulting MKV rather than assuming all streams were preserved. FFmpeg documents stream mapping and output options in its command reference; its codec documentation lists AC-3 encoders.
Choose a channel layout for your playback setup
The appropriate AC-3 mixdown depends on how you listen. A stereo playback path may need a stereo mixdown; a surround system may call for a supported multichannel layout. HandBrake provides mixdown controls and explains surround handling in its Surround Sound Guide. Select for the actual player, receiver, and speaker setup rather than assuming one layout is right for every file.

Convert with HandBrake
- Open the MKV and select MKV as the output container.
- In the audio settings, select the language and track you intend to convert.
- Set that track’s encoder to AC-3. Do not choose TrueHD passthrough if your goal is to create AC-3.
- Choose a mixdown appropriate for the playback setup, then start the encode.
HandBrake’s audio codec guide distinguishes encoding from passthrough, and its container documentation covers MKV support. Confirm which tracks your chosen settings include; preserving the original TrueHD as a separate track depends on the workflow and selected output settings.

Check the output before replacing the original
- Write to a new filename so the source remains available if the result is wrong.
- Confirm the output has the intended AC-3 track and that its language and channel layout are suitable.
- If using FFmpeg, confirm the video stream was copied rather than re-encoded.
- Check whether subtitles, chapters, and any other tracks you need made it into the output.
- Test playback on the actual device and audio path. MKV container support alone does not establish compatibility with every codec on every device.
