A cracked phone back can often be replaced, but the right part and repair method depend on the exact phone model. “Phone back” may mean rear glass or a complete back cover, and some models have components attached to that part. Identify your model first, then choose between a model-specific DIY repair and professional service. A bulging cover is different from ordinary cracked back glass: it can indicate a swollen battery, so stop and seek qualified service.
First identify the damage and the exact phone
Find the phone’s full model and variant in Settings, on its packaging, or through the account you use with its manufacturer. Do this before ordering parts or following a guide: procedures and components differ between models, even within one product family. Samsung, for example, directs owners to the repair guide for their specific model.

Then check whether you have cracked rear glass, a broken or loose back cover, or a cover that is lifting or bulging. Do not treat a bulging back as a routine glass replacement. The Galaxy S25 repair guide warns that a bulge may indicate a swollen battery; stop ordinary repair plans and arrange qualified help.

Prepare safely before opening the phone
- Back up important data. Samsung Ireland’s instructions call for a backup before repair. Power the phone off and disconnect cables.
- Follow the exact model’s battery and setup guidance. The iPhone 15 and Galaxy S25 guides advise lowering the battery charge below 25%. Samsung Ireland’s instructions instead say to fully discharge the battery. These are model- and source-specific directions, not one universal rule. Check the current instructions for your phone. Samsung also warns that leaving the SIM tray inserted during disassembly may damage the device.
- Protect yourself from shards. For broken glass, Samsung recommends a protective cover and safety equipment. Its US guidance specifies safety goggles and cut-resistant gloves and describes using an acrylic cover to contain debris. iFixit advises covering cracked glass with tape; on the iPhone 15, it recommends overlapping packing tape over badly cracked glass. Tape can also help a suction cup grip.
- Set up a suitable work area. Samsung Ireland calls for a ventilated area and safety equipment. Keep the work surface clear and use the precautions specified in your phone’s repair guide.
Match parts, adhesive, and tools to the model
Buy by exact model and variant, not by appearance alone. Check whether the replacement is rear glass or a complete back cover, and whether it includes any attached components. Samsung recommends authorized genuine parts and cautions that third-party parts may not function properly. If considering an aftermarket part, verify its stated compatibility and understand that the cited sources do not establish that generic parts fit across phones.
Adhesive is part of the repair, not an optional finishing touch: the cited iPhone 15 and Galaxy S25 guides require replacement adhesive. Depending on the specific procedure, tools may include opening picks, a suction cup or handle, and a suitable heating bag or other heat source. Samsung’s guide also lists protective equipment and a protective cover. Confirm the exact kit and part requirements in your model’s guide before starting.

Why heat and disassembly require care
Adhesive holds the Galaxy S25 back cover to its frame. iFixit’s guide describes warming it with a heated iOpener for two minutes, or using a hair dryer or heat gun to soften it. That is an example for that model, not a universal timing or temperature. The guide warns that improper heat-gun use can destroy the display or battery. The iPhone 15 guide cautions against heating beyond “hot to the touch” because its battery is susceptible to heat damage. Do not improvise a generic temperature or apply uncontrolled heat.

Follow the model-specific replacement and checks
Do not use a general article as a substitute for a step-by-step repair guide for your exact phone. Before sealing the replacement, follow the guide’s inspection and function checks. In the Galaxy S25 instructions, iFixit advises checking functions before resealing, cleaning camera smudges with a lint-free cloth, and aligning replacement adhesive with the cover’s cutouts and contours.
Post-repair checks can be model-specific. For the iPhone 17 Pro, iFixit notes that the back glass includes the wireless charging unit and that wireless charging may require Apple Repair Assistant after replacement. This does not establish the same requirement for other iPhone models or other phones.

What to expect after a rear glass replacement
A new back does not prove that a phone has regained its original water resistance. Samsung Ireland states: “IPXX performance cannot be guaranteed when it is repaired by user or non-skilled person.” The statement is specific to Samsung’s Ireland repair instructions; do not interpret a successful DIY repair as certification of any phone’s sealing.
