Ars Technica reported on October 5, 2026 that it can free up to 12GB. Treat that as a possible outcome, not a promise: the space you get back depends on your Mac and on how quickly macOS cleans up.
What RemoveMacAI is and who it works for
The project repository, maintained by Om Lahore, describes it as a way to “Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and remove its downloaded models.” Requirements per the README:

- An Apple silicon Mac. Apple lists Macs with M1 or later as compatible with Apple Intelligence on macOS 27.
- macOS 27. The project says macOS 26 and earlier are unsupported.
Nobody independent has audited the tool, and I have not run it. Everything below about how it behaves comes from the project’s own documentation or from press coverage of it.

How much space will you actually get back?
Several different figures are in circulation, and they measure different things:

The README also says macOS deletes released model files on its own schedule, so Storage settings may keep counting them for a while after removal. Don’t conclude the tool failed just because the number hasn’t dropped right away.
What gets turned off
The README lists these among the affected features: Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, several summary features, Mail smart replies, inline text predictions, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up, and Xcode predictive code completion.

The project says dictation keeps working because its speech models are separate. Some apps and system capabilities that rely on Apple’s on-device models will stop working, though. Check the list before you run it, especially if you depend on Siri or Writing Tools. The tool also supports keeping selected features, so you don’t have to turn off everything.

The tool installs a configuration profile that you must approve in System Settings. It then removes models through Apple’s asset service. In the README’s words: “Models are removed through Apple’s asset service. System Integrity Protection stays enabled and no files under /System are modified directly.” These are the maintainers’ claims, not audit findings.

Installing and running it
The README documents three routes:
- A one-line installer.
- A Homebrew package.
- A downloadable archive with checksum verification.
The binary is ad-hoc signed but not notarized. If you download it in a browser, you may need to remove the macOS quarantine attribute before it will run. Because you’re running an unnotarized utility and approving a profile, read the repository and the install script first, and prefer the checksum-verified download if you’re cautious.
The documented workflow
- Run the status command to see the current state, or use the dry-run option to preview changes without applying them.
- Run the default command. It shows your current state and asks for confirmation. If you want to keep some features, use the documented selective-retention option.
- Approve the configuration profile in System Settings when prompted.
- Wait for model removal to finish, then check status again. Storage figures may lag.
Check the README for the exact command names and flags, since they may change between releases.

If removal fails
The README says that if model removal fails or can’t be confirmed, the off command exits with status 1 and leaves the profile active. It recommends reading the warnings and checking status before you retry. Do not delete protected system files by hand to force the result. That is not part of the documented procedure.
Undoing it
Run removemacai revert. The repository says removing the profile restores your previous settings. Models may download again when a feature needs them, so you’d spend that storage again if you turn Apple Intelligence back on.

Should you use it?
It makes sense if you never use Apple Intelligence and the storage matters, for example on a small SSD. Skip it if you rely on Siri, Writing Tools, or Photos Clean Up, or if you’re uneasy about running unaudited, non-notarized software. The sources here don’t include an independent comparison with other removal methods, so treat RemoveMacAI’s behavior as documented by its maintainers. Reread the current README and Apple’s support page before you run it, since requirements may change.
