Remove Search Hub Homepage and Ads (Removal Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search Hub homepage changes and pop-up ads usually don’t stop after you “switch the home page” once. This type of browser hijack often persists through extensions, browser policies, system-level startup items, or network settings like proxy/DNS.

This guide walks you through a full removal workflow: browser settings first, then system checks, then persistence cleanup. Follow it in order and you’ll have the best chance of stopping Search Hub ads for good.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Use the exact wording for settings below (it matters), and restart your browser after each major change.

What Search Hub Is and Why It Keeps Returning

“Search Hub” is commonly used as a name for a hijacked search/home provider that injects ads or redirects searches to sponsor pages. Typical mechanisms include a malicious extension, a browser “managed by your organization” policy, or a background app that re-applies settings.

That’s why the common “go to Settings and change Home page” approach often fails—someone (or something) keeps resetting those values.

Before You Start: Prerequisites and Safety Checks

  • Know your browser(s): Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari.
  • Write down current values of Home page and Search engine (so you can confirm what changes).
  • If you use a work/school-managed device, avoid removing organization policies without IT guidance.
  • Be cautious with downloads: hijacks often arrive via bundled installers. If you recently installed anything suspicious, remove it first.

If you see browser warnings about malware or persistent redirect behavior, stop and complete the steps below before continuing browsing.

Quick Wins (Do These First)

These quick actions catch the most common hijack setup in minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open your browser and go to the Extensions/Add-ons page.
  2. Disable and remove anything you don’t recognize (especially extensions related to search, coupons, “web protection,” or “assistant”).
  3. Change your browser homepage/search engine to your preferred provider (e.g., Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo).
  4. Restart the browser and check whether the homepage and search results immediately revert.

Remove Search Hub in Your Browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox)

Start with the browser itself. If Search Hub remains after these changes, move to system-level cleanup and persistence checks.

Google Chrome (Windows, macOS)

Chrome hijacks usually show up as a modified Homepage, a modified Search engine, or a suspicious extension.

  1. Open chrome://settings.
  2. Go to On startup → set it to Open the New Tab page (or your preferred option).
  3. Go to Appearance → confirm Show Home button if you use it, then verify the Home page URL.
  4. Go to Search engine → check Search engine used in the address bar and Manage search engines. Remove the Search Hub entry.
  5. Go to Extensions (open chrome://extensions) → remove anything unknown → restart Chrome.

If you see search settings grayed out or a banner like “Managed by your organization,” skip to the persistence and policies section later in this guide.

Microsoft Edge (Windows, macOS)

Edge uses a very similar settings layout to Chrome, but the reset and policies can be slightly different.

  1. Open edge://settings.
  2. Go to Start, home, and new tabs → set When Edge starts to Open the New Tab page.
  3. Go to Search → set Search engine used in address bar to your preferred provider.
  4. Open edge://extensions → remove unknown extensions. Restart Edge.
  5. Open edge://settings/content/search (if present) and check anything that redirects search queries.

If you see “This setting is managed,” you’ll need to address system-level policies and background components.

Mozilla Firefox (Windows, macOS)

Firefox hijacks commonly modify the home page, the default search engine, or inject redirects via add-ons.

  1. Open about:preferences.
  2. Go to Home → set Homepage and new windows to your preferred URL or Firefox Home.
  3. Go to Search → select a trusted Default Search Engine (and remove Search Hub if it appears in suggestions/manage list).
  4. Go to Extensions (type about:addons) → remove unknown add-ons → restart Firefox.

Firefox also has a hidden configuration path. If values keep changing, check the policy section and reset options later.

Remove Search Hub in Safari (macOS, iPhone, iPad)

Safari hijacks are less common than Chrome/Edge, but they do happen—often via profiles, ad-injection apps, or browser content blockers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safari on macOS

  1. Open System Settings or System Preferences → search for Profiles.
  2. In Safari, open Safari → Settings (or Preferences).
  3. Set General → verify Homepage.
  4. Set Search → confirm Search engine.
  5. Safari → Extensions → remove anything you don’t recognize.
  6. Restart Safari.

If “Profiles” shows an installed configuration that affects Safari browsing, removing it is usually required.

Safari on iPhone and iPad (iOS, iPadOS)

  1. Open Settings → Safari.
  2. Under Search, confirm the Search Engine value.
  3. Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
  4. If you see a profile installed (often from an adware bundle), remove it.
  5. Return to Safari and verify the homepage and search behavior.

If the setting keeps reverting, a profile is the most likely cause.

Check System-Level Causes (Where Ads Come From)

If the homepage/search engine returns after you set it, the hijack is likely being re-applied by a system component—an installed program, a startup task, a launch agent, or a policy.

Windows 10/11: Unwanted Apps, Startup Items, and Policies

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Remove anything installed around the same time you noticed Search Hub, especially “toolbars,” “browser protection,” “download manager,” “launcher,” “search manager,” or unknown utilities.
  3. Open Task Manager → Startup apps → disable suspicious entries.
  4. Press Win + R → type taskschd.msc → press Enter.
  5. In Task Scheduler, check Task Scheduler Library for tasks that run on logon and trigger browser-related actions. Delete the clearly malicious/unknown ones.
  6. Check policies: press Win + R → type gpedit.msc (Pro editions) and inspect Chrome/Edge policies under Administrative Templates.

If you don’t have gpedit, check domain policy signs; if it’s a personal PC, the presence of “managed” browser settings is a red flag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

macOS: Launch Agents, Profiles, and Login Items

  1. Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Profiles. Remove unknown profiles.
  2. Open System Settings → General → Login Items. Remove anything suspicious.
  3. In Finder, open Go → Go to Folder… and check:
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents
  • /Library/LaunchAgents
  • /Library/LaunchDaemons

Look for recently created or clearly unrelated .plist files and remove only what you’re confident is malicious (or use a reputable security tool to confirm).

Android: Browser Changes and Device Admin

  1. Open Settings → Apps → manage suspicious apps and uninstall anything you don’t trust.
  2. Check Settings → Apps → Default apps → Browser app. Ensure it points to your real browser.
  3. Open Settings → Security → Device admin apps. Disable unknown admin apps.
  4. Open your browser’s settings and reset homepage/search engine to defaults.

iOS/iPadOS: Configuration Profiles That Rewire Browsing

  1. Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
  2. Remove any profile you didn’t install intentionally.
  3. Restart the device if changes don’t apply immediately.
  4. Re-check Safari’s search engine in Settings → Safari.

Remove Malicious Extensions and “Managed” Settings

Search Hub often rides in as a browser extension. But sometimes it’s enforced via policy (so you can remove the extension and still get redirected).

  • Look for entries that can’t be removed or where toggles are disabled.
  • Check for “Managed by your organization,” “Your browser is managed,” or a similar banner.
  • On Windows, look for installed components with names like “Search Protect,” “Web Assistant,” “Search Manager,” “Browser Guard,” or random URL-based names.

When you find a managed browser, removal must include the underlying policy or profile, not just the UI settings.

Clean Up Network Settings (Proxy, DNS, and Hosts)

Ads and redirects can come from proxy/DNS poisoning or a modified hosts file.

Windows Proxy and DNS

  1. Open Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy.
  2. Turn off Use a proxy server.
  3. Open Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network Connections.
  4. Right-click your active adapter → Properties → select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Properties.
  5. Ensure you aren’t using unknown DNS servers. If unsure, choose Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  6. Check hosts file: open Notepad as Administrator → open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and remove suspicious lines (keep only the default localhost entries).

macOS Proxy and DNS

  1. Open System Settings → Network → select your network (Wi‑Fi or Ethernet).
  2. Click Details → Proxies.
  3. Turn off any enabled proxies you didn’t set (HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS).
  4. Verify DNS: go to Details → DNS and remove unknown DNS servers.

Restart your browser afterward.

Chrome/Edge DNS-over-HTTPS and Search Engine Overrides

  1. Chrome/Edge → open their settings → search for DNS or Secure DNS.
  2. Disable Secure DNS temporarily to test whether redirects stop.
  3. If the problem disappears, re-enable Secure DNS using a known provider (or set it to your ISP’s recommended setting) and re-check search engine assignments.

Scan for Remaining PUPs and Persistence

After removing extensions and changing settings, run a full scan to catch leftovers. Use reputable security software and keep it updated.

  • On Windows, a reputable scanner can detect adware components and reinforcers that reinstall browser changes.
  • On macOS, use well-known malware scanners if the hijack persists after removing extensions and profiles.

What to look for in results

  • Anything labeled as adware, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program), hijacker, or browser modifier.
  • Files scheduled to run at startup, background services, or launch agents.
  • Persistence mechanisms tied to your browser (extensions with reinstaller behavior).

How to verify the removal actually worked

  1. Close all browser windows.
  2. Reopen the browser and check: homepage/new tab, address bar search engine, and any redirect behavior.
  3. Search for a neutral term and verify that results come from your chosen search provider—not sponsor redirects.
  4. Wait 10–30 minutes and repeat checks in case the hijack runs on intervals.

Troubleshooting: If Search Hub Still Shows Up

When Search Hub returns, it’s almost always one of these: a policy/profile, a hidden extension, or a system component reapplying settings.

Symptoms and fixes checklist

Symptom Most likely cause What to do
Homepage keeps reverting within minutes Reinstaller extension or system startup task Remove unknown extensions, disable startup apps, check Task Scheduler (Windows) or Launch Agents (macOS)
Settings are grayed out / “Managed by your organization” Browser policy enforced by system or profile Remove profiles (iOS/macOS) or investigate Windows policy/profile tooling; remove the responsible component
Search redirects occur but homepage looks normal Search engine override or DNS/proxy Verify address bar search engine, disable Secure DNS/Proxy temporarily, check hosts
Pop-up ads keep appearing on multiple sites Adware extension or a background app Remove extensions, uninstall suspicious apps, run a full system scan

If you want maximum certainty, consider creating a new browser profile (Chrome/Edge) after system cleanup, then retesting. A new profile reduces the chance of hidden cached state or extension carryover.

Comparison: Browser Reset vs. Targeted Removal

There are two practical routes when time is short: reset the browser or remove everything surgically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Targeted removal keeps your bookmarks and most preferences, but requires patience to find the source.
  • Browser reset is faster but can remove extensions, search customizations, and sometimes site settings.

If Search Hub returns after a reset, the root cause is outside the browser (system persistence, policy, or profile).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only changing the homepage without removing extensions.
  • Removing the visible extension while ignoring a managed policy banner.
  • Restarting only the browser when the reinstaller is tied to system startup (restart the OS).
  • Leaving proxies/DNS in a non-default state after troubleshooting.
  • Installing “free cleanup tools” from the same type of sites that caused the hijack in the first place.

FAQs About Removing Search Hub Homepage and Ads

Will removing Search Hub extensions stop all ads?

Often, yes—if the extension is the source. But if ads persist after extension removal, check system-level tasks, profiles, and proxy/DNS settings.

Why does Search Hub come back after I change my homepage?

That behavior usually means a persistence mechanism is reapplying settings (a background program, scheduled task, launch agent, or browser policy/profile).

Is a browser reset enough?

A reset can help if the hijack is confined to browser state. If Search Hub returns, you need to remove the underlying app/policy and then retest.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know if it’s a policy instead of an extension?

Look for managed indicators like “Managed by your organization” or settings that are locked/greyed out. In that case, you must remove the policy/profile source.

Does this work on iPhone and iPad too?

Yes, but the most common cause is a configuration profile. Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and remove unknown profiles.

Bottom Line

To Remove Search Hub Homepage and Ads effectively, you need more than a one-time homepage change. Remove unknown extensions/add-ons, verify search settings, then hunt for persistence via system startup items, profiles, and network settings.

If you follow the workflow above and still see Search Hub, the issue is almost certainly outside the browser UI—treat it like a persistence problem, not a cosmetic one.
