Netflix can autoplay on your TV in two different ways: it may automatically start previews/trailers when you highlight something, and it may automatically continue to the next episode after one finishes. The fix is usually a Netflix profile setting, not a TV setting.
This guide walks you through the exact switches that control Netflix autoplay, then covers what to do on popular streaming devices when your TV keeps resuming or launching Netflix automatically.

Why Netflix Might Be Autoplaying on Your TV
Most of the time, Netflix autoplay is driven by settings inside your Netflix profile. Your TV simply follows what Netflix requests when the app opens or when an episode ends.
Less often, your TV may be turning on and launching the Netflix app due to device control features like HDMI-CEC (CEC/Anynet+/Bravia Sync) or a “resume” behavior after standby.

What You’ll Need Before You Start
- Your Netflix login and the profile that’s actually used on your TV.
- Access to a device where you can change Netflix profile playback settings (phone, tablet, or a computer is easiest).
- If needed, your TV’s remote to update apps and clear caches/data.
Turn Off Netflix Autoplay (The Setting That Matters Most)
Start by turning off Netflix’s playback autoplay options for the exact profile on your TV. This is the most reliable fix across Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV/Google TV, Samsung, LG, and gaming consoles.
On a phone or computer (recommended)
- Open a browser and go to
netflix.com. - Sign in to your Netflix account.
- Go to Account.
- Under Profile & Parental Controls, select the profile you use on your TV.
- Find Playback settings.
- Turn off any relevant autoplay options, including:
- Auto-Play previews (previews/trailers start automatically)
- Play next episode automatically (continues after an episode ends)
- Save changes and fully close Netflix on your TV, then reopen it.
What the toggles actually control
| Symptom on your TV | Setting to change |
|---|---|
| Highlighting a title starts playing a trailer/preview | Auto-Play previews |
| After an episode ends, the next one starts by itself | Play next episode automatically |
| Netflix opens and starts playing immediately when you launch the app | Usually still profile playback settings + device resume behavior |
Device-Specific Steps
After updating the Netflix profile setting, the steps below help when your TV still resumes Netflix automatically or continues playback behavior due to the device app.
Roku
Roku is usually solved by changing the Netflix profile autoplay settings, but app cache issues can keep the old behavior.
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Select Netflix.
- Choose Remove channel, then reopen the channel store and reinstall Netflix.
- Launch Netflix and confirm the profile settings are turned off in Playback settings on netflix.com.
Apple TV
On Apple TV, the Netflix app’s resume behavior can make it feel like autoplay is still on. Updating and reinstalling can reset the app state.
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Go to Apps > Netflix.
- Update Netflix if an update is available.
- If it still autoplay-resumes, remove Netflix and reinstall it from the App Store on Apple TV.
- Open Netflix, then verify you’re using the same Netflix profile whose Playback settings you changed on netflix.com.
Amazon Fire TV (Fire TV Stick)
Fire TV devices often show “resume playback” behavior after standby. Clearing app data can help.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Settings on the Samsung TV.

- If autoplay behavior remains, reinstall Netflix: remove the app and install it again from the TV’s app store.
- Check External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and toggle it off temporarily to test.
LG Smart TV
LG TVs can wake devices and change inputs through HDMI-CEC variants. Testing with that off can confirm whether it’s a device-control issue.
- Open Settings on the LG TV.
- Go to General > About This TV and update software if available.
- Update or reinstall Netflix from the LG Content Store (remove and reinstall if updates don’t help).
- Open Settings > Connection > HDMI Settings.
- Find SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) and turn it off temporarily to test.
Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One
On Xbox, autoplay issues are commonly profile-based, but corrupted app state can also cause “instant resume.”
- On a phone or computer, change Netflix profile playback settings on
netflix.com(Auto-Play previews and Play next episode automatically off). - On your Xbox, go to My games & apps.
- Highlight Netflix, press the Menu button on your controller.
- Select Manage game & add-ons (or similar wording).
- Select Uninstall, then reinstall Netflix.
- Launch Netflix and confirm you’re signed into the correct Netflix profile.
PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4
PS consoles follow the Netflix playback setting, but reinstalling can clear any app state that keeps resuming.

When the Setting Isn’t Showing (Common Causes)
If you can’t find autoplay toggles on Netflix, don’t assume the problem is unsolvable. These issues are common and fixable.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Using the wrong profile
Your account can have multiple profiles. If your TV uses a different profile than the one you updated on netflix.com, autoplay will continue.
- On your TV, check the profile name shown at the Netflix login screen.
- On netflix.com, edit that same profile under Profile & Parental Controls.
- Reopen Netflix after saving changes.
Kids profile / restricted profiles
Some profile restrictions can limit settings visibility or behavior. If your TV uses a Kids profile, try switching to another profile temporarily to confirm whether the autoplay setting is available.
Netflix app is out of date
Old Netflix apps can behave inconsistently. Update Netflix from your TV/app store, then power-cycle the TV.
TV resumes Netflix after sleep/standby
Some TVs automatically reopen the last app when you turn the TV back on, which can look like autoplay. The fix is usually reducing resume behavior or turning off HDMI-CEC.

Troubleshooting If Autoplay Still Won’t Stop
If autoplay won’t change after updating the Netflix profile, use the steps below in order. Each one fixes a real, common failure mode.
Clear the Netflix app data/cache (where available)
Cache/data clearing forces the Netflix app to rebuild its state. Use the device-specific instructions above for Roku, Fire TV, Android TV/Google TV, Samsung, LG, Xbox, and PlayStation.
Reboot in the right order
- Turn off the TV.
- Unplug the TV power for 15–30 seconds.
- Unplug the streaming device (Roku/Fire TV/Apple TV/console) for 15–30 seconds.
- Plug in the streaming device, wait for it to fully boot.
- Plug in the TV and try Netflix again.
Update system software and Netflix app
On many TVs, software updates are a prerequisite for app stability. Update the TV OS and then update the Netflix app from the device store.
Sign out and back in to Netflix
If Netflix settings sync didn’t apply to your current session, a sign-out resets the session context.
- Open Netflix on the TV.
- Go to Account/Profile > Sign out (wording varies by device).
- Sign back in and confirm you’re on the correct profile.
Check HDMI-CEC / Bravia Sync / Anynet+ behavior
If your TV is turning on and starting the Netflix app when other devices power on, HDMI-CEC can be the culprit. Temporarily disable HDMI-CEC/Anynet+/Bravia Sync to test.

Common Mistakes
- Changing autoplay settings on the wrong Netflix profile.
- Disabling preview autoplay but forgetting “Play next episode automatically,” or vice versa.
- Expecting the TV to stop “resume playback” after standby without changing resume/CEC behavior.
- Not restarting the Netflix app after saving changes on netflix.com.
FAQ
Can I stop Netflix from autoplaying without using a web browser?
It depends on your device. Many TVs don’t expose the full Netflix Playback settings UI. The most consistent method is changing Playback settings on netflix.com, then reopening Netflix on the TV.
Why does Netflix keep starting the next episode even after I turned off autoplay?
Double-check that you turned off Play next episode automatically for the same profile used on your TV. Also clear the Netflix app cache/data if the app still behaves like it’s using older settings.
Does Netflix autoplay depend on my TV or streaming device?
Netflix autoplay behavior is mostly profile-controlled in Netflix. Your TV/device settings can still affect whether Netflix launches quickly or resumes after standby, but the core autoplay toggles live in Netflix Playback settings.

Will disabling HDMI-CEC stop Netflix autoplay?
If the issue is actually “Netflix opens when my console/streaming box wakes,” then yes—turning off HDMI-CEC features can stop that chain reaction. If Netflix is autoplaying inside the app, you still need to disable Netflix playback autoplay.
What if I don’t see the autoplay toggles on netflix.com?
Make sure you’re editing the correct profile. If you’re using a Kids or restricted profile, try another profile to confirm. If Netflix’s UI still doesn’t show the toggles, sign out/in and update the Netflix app on your TV.
Bottom Line
To stop Netflix from automatically playing on your TV, turn off the right Netflix profile Playback settings—especially Auto-Play previews and Play next episode automatically. Then restart the Netflix app and, if needed, clear cache/data or reinstall.
If Netflix still “starts by itself” when your TV wakes or when other devices power on, test HDMI-CEC/Anynet+/SIMPLINK/Bravia Sync settings. That’s usually the difference between autoplay inside Netflix and autoplay caused by device control.
