To strip audio from a video in your browser, use a tool that removes the audio track, load your video, export the edited file, and play the exported copy to confirm it is silent. This is different from muting playback: a player’s volume control can silence what you hear without changing the video file.
How to remove the audio track in a browser
- Check support first. Confirm that the tool accepts your video’s container and, where specified, its file layout or codec. Format support varies by service.
- Open the tool and load the video. Select the file from your device or use the page’s file-drop area.
- Choose track removal. Use a control described as removing or stripping audio. A preview mute may affect playback only.
- Export the silent copy. Save or download the result to your device.
- Verify the result. Keep the original, then play the exported file in the app or service where you plan to use it. Check that the audio is gone and the picture plays correctly.
Controls and output behavior differ between tools, so follow the selected service’s instructions rather than assuming every browser editor works the same way.

Why supported formats differ
A video file is a container that can hold separate video and audio streams. Removing audio means producing a new file without the audio stream; simply reducing playback volume does not do that.
For example, audiojs says its tool accepts MP4, M4V, MOV, and 3GP files with a single moov/mdat layout, but does not support fragmented MP4, MKV, WebM, or AVI. ArrayKit lists MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM and says it preserves the source container. These are separate service-specific claims, not universal guarantees that every file with those extensions will work.

Browser media APIs do not remove the need for file-handling logic. MDN explains that WebCodecs provides interfaces for encoding and decoding audio and video, but a tool still needs demuxing to read streams from a container and muxing to write a playable output file. Browser and device codec support can also differ, so a listed container may not be enough to establish compatibility.
Does browser processing preserve video quality?
It depends on how the tool creates the output. The audiojs page says it copies the video stream byte-for-byte and rebuilds the MP4 container without re-encoding the picture. If that method applies to your file, the encoded video stream is preserved rather than recompressed. Do not assume other tools use the same approach; check their documentation for whether they copy or re-encode video.

WebCodecs gives web developers low-level access to browser media encoding and decoding, as MDN Web Docs describes. It is a building block, not by itself a complete video-file editing system. Chrome Developers notes that media processing can be moved to a worker to help keep a page responsive, but that does not establish how a particular audio-removal service processes files. What to check before using a tool with private footage
Both audiojs and ArrayKit say their processing happens locally in the browser and that videos are not uploaded. Those are claims from the services themselves, not an independent audit of their network behavior. If the footage is confidential, read the chosen service’s privacy information and assess its handling before loading the file. Do not assume that every web-based editor processes files on-device.

If the silent file does not work as expected
- The file will not load: Check the tool’s current format guidance, including any restrictions on file layout. A familiar extension alone does not guarantee support.
- The output still has sound: Confirm that you removed the audio track and did not only mute the preview or playback.
- The target app will not play it: Some players may not handle a video with no audio stream as expected. Test the exported copy in the intended app or platform before sharing or using it.
- The picture appears different: Check whether the tool re-encodes video. Only the audiojs documentation cited above makes the specific byte-for-byte video-copy claim.
