A macOS app that works in its build folder can fail after installation if one of its Mach-O files still points to a dynamic library at an absolute path on the developer’s machine. To make a bundled app relocatable, inspect the executable and every bundled library, replace machine-specific dependency names with paths that resolve inside the app, then sign the finished code.
The title’s DeepSeek Harness installer failure and count of 24 absolute paths are the author’s reported incident, not a count independently established by Apple’s documentation. The repair principles below apply to relocatable macOS apps generally.

Why can a macOS app fail after you move it?
A Mach-O file records names for the dynamic libraries it needs. If a dependency is recorded as a full path—for example, a path under a developer’s build or installation directory—macOS may look for the library at that same location on the recipient’s machine. Moving the app does not rewrite that reference, so the path can point nowhere.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApple distinguishes absolute paths from path forms that resolve relative to the executable, the Mach-O file that contains the reference, or runtime search paths. For libraries included in an app bundle, Apple recommends a relative path. Its MTLLibrary.installName documentation states: “Use a relative path when you include the dynamic library as part of a bundle or app.”

Using @rpath can support relocation, but it does not make an app self-contained by itself. The library and its dependencies must actually be bundled, and the relevant runtime search paths must resolve to their locations.
How do you find absolute dylib paths in a Mac app?
Inspect the built app or the installer’s actual app payload—not just the project settings. Apple’s guidance for embedding nonstandard code structures in a bundle uses otool to inspect dependency names and run-path load commands.

- Inventory Mach-O files. Identify the app’s executable and every bundled dynamic library or framework binary. Dependencies can be nested: a library may itself load another library.
- List dependencies. Run
otool -Lon each executable and library. Review every listed install name and record which file contains it, whether it is absolute, and which bundled file it is intended to reach. - Inspect runtime search paths. Run
otool -lon relevant Mach-O files and examine theirLC_RPATHload commands. Check the executable and any libraries whose own dependency resolution needs a run path. - Check the complete graph. Do not stop when the main executable looks clean. Verify that every bundled library’s dependencies also resolve to the intended in-bundle targets.
The exact list of affected binaries and paths is specific to each build. The reported 24 paths in the DeepSeek Harness incident should be treated as that project’s count, not as a general property of macOS installers.
Which path style should a bundled library use?
| Path style | What it resolves against | When it can fit |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute path | A fixed filesystem location. | Only when the library is deliberately installed at that fixed location. It is brittle for a self-contained app intended to move between machines or directories. |
@executable_path |
The directory containing the process’s main executable. | When the library location is defined relative to that executable. Account for the executable’s actual location inside the bundle. |
@loader_path |
The directory containing the Mach-O image with the dependency reference. | When a dependency should be found relative to the referencing executable or library. Check nested-library cases. |
@rpath |
Runtime search paths available to the loading context. | For relocatable executable-and-library layouts, provided an appropriate run path is present wherever needed. |
Apple’s archived article Run-Path Dependent Libraries describes a directory structure in which executables and dependent libraries can be relocated together. Apple marked that article as updated on July 23, 2012, and says the feature is available in OS X 10.5 and later; it is useful for the underlying mechanism, not a substitute for checking current toolchain and macOS behavior.

How should libraries be laid out inside the app?
Bundle layout and path references have to agree. Apple’s bundle guidance places macOS dynamic libraries and frameworks in Contents/Frameworks, executables in Contents/MacOS, and other resources in appropriate bundle resource locations. See Apple’s bundle embedding guidance and bundle content placement documentation.
For a common layout with an executable in Contents/MacOS and libraries in Contents/Frameworks, calculate the relative relationship from the actual loading context. Do not copy an rpath from another project without checking where its executable and libraries sit. A library loaded by another library may need its own dependency references and a suitable run-path context.

How do you fix an install name or @rpath?
Prefer a build-time correction
If you control the library build, configure it to use relocatable install names and suitable run paths before producing the app. Apple describes rpath-relative references as the preferred structure for relocatable code. Fixing the build avoids carrying machine-specific paths into later app builds.

Rewrite Mach-O load commands when rebuilding is not possible
For a closed-source or otherwise unmodifiable library, Apple documents install_name_tool as a way to change a library’s identifier, rewrite dependent install names, and add or adjust rpaths. Apply changes to the Mach-O files that contain the relevant load commands; changing only the main executable will not repair dependencies recorded by bundled libraries.

The specific old and new names, files to edit, and run-path values depend on the app’s bundle layout and dependency graph. Derive them from inspection rather than applying a generic command with guessed paths. After editing, inspect each changed file again with otool -L and otool -l.
What should you verify before distributing the app?
- Dependency names: Confirm that changed references point to the intended bundled libraries rather than a developer-specific absolute location.
- Run paths: Confirm that the executable or relevant loader has an
LC_RPATHthat resolves the selected@rpathreferences in the actual bundle layout. - Nested dependencies: Recheck libraries as well as the main executable; no unresolved machine-specific path should remain in the dependency graph.
- Final artifact: Validate the app as packaged for distribution, not only a development copy. Test installation and launch from a different location than the build tree when that is part of the release scenario.
- Signing and notarization: Make Mach-O edits before final signing because they change code. Then follow Apple’s current direct-distribution signing and notarization guidance for the target macOS, Xcode version, nested code, and packaging method.
Apple’s older TN2206 is a historical code-signing note. Its discussion of Gatekeeper and outside-bundle dynamic libraries reflects the versions it covered; do not treat it as an unqualified statement of current macOS behavior.
