How do I remove the cloud icon from my desktop? First check where it appears: beside a file, in the taskbar or menu bar, or as part of a Desktop folder that is syncing to the cloud. Those are different things, and the right fix depends on your computer and whether you want to hide an indicator or stop syncing files.
Identify which cloud icon you mean
| Where you see it | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Beside a file or folder | A provider-specific status badge. It can indicate whether an item is stored locally, syncing, or needs to be downloaded. | Identify whether the provider is OneDrive, iCloud Drive, or Dropbox, then check that provider’s status-icon guidance: OneDrive icons, iCloud Drive file status, or Dropbox status icons. |
| Windows notification area, macOS menu bar, or Linux system tray | The cloud app’s control or status icon, rather than a file on the Desktop. Dropbox documents its app icon in these system locations; Microsoft documents OneDrive notification-area and menu-bar icons. | Decide whether you want to hide or relocate the app icon, or stop the app from syncing. These are different actions. See Dropbox’s desktop-app guide and Microsoft’s OneDrive icon guide. |
| Your Desktop files appear to be inside a cloud folder or are available on other devices | A backup or sync feature may be using the Desktop folder. | Use the provider’s Desktop backup or sync settings, and review where existing files will remain before changing them. |
A cloud badge is not a reason to delete a file. In particular, deleting an item from iCloud-synced Desktop or Documents deletes it from every device signed in to that Apple Account; deleted items remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Downloading an item or choosing Remove Download changes its local-copy state, not the need to keep the file. See Apple’s iCloud Drive guidance.

Stop OneDrive from backing up Desktop on Windows
Use this path if OneDrive is backing up your Windows Desktop and you want to stop that folder backup. Microsoft says that with Desktop backup enabled, “the items on your desktop roam with you to your other desktops where you’re running OneDrive.” The setting is in OneDrive’s backup controls, not the folder-selection setting.
Recommended Free Tools
- Select the OneDrive cloud in the notification area. If it is not visible, check the hidden-icons area.
- Open Help & Settings, then select Settings.
- Open Sync and backup, then select Manage backup.
- Turn off the Desktop toggle and read the choice in the dialog before confirming.
Microsoft’s dialog lets you choose to keep the files only in OneDrive, which removes them from the computer, or only on the PC, which removes them from OneDrive. Inspect the files and choose based on where you need them. If any are cloud-only, download them first by right-clicking and choosing Always keep on this device. See Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-backup instructions.

Do not confuse Desktop backup with Choose folders
To stop syncing an eligible OneDrive folder to this PC, the Windows route is OneDrive Settings > Account > Choose folders. Unchecking a folder removes it from the computer but leaves it available online. Microsoft notes that important PC folders, including Desktop, cannot be unchecked there. To change Desktop backup, use Manage backup instead. See Microsoft’s folder-selection guidance.
Stop iCloud Desktop and Documents syncing on a Mac
If iCloud Drive is storing your Mac’s Desktop and Documents folders, turning off the feature does not automatically move the existing files back into newly created local folders. Apple says files already saved in Desktop and Documents stay in iCloud Drive; new local Desktop and Documents folders are created in your home folder and are initially empty.

To make existing files available in the local folders, move the files you want from iCloud Drive into those folders yourself. Apple also describes an iCloud Drive (Archive) location for a kept local copy when iCloud Drive is turned off or you sign out. See Apple’s instructions for iCloud Drive on Mac.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you only want to remove the app icon
A tray or menu-bar cloud icon belongs to the sync app; it is not a Desktop file badge. Hiding or relocating a system-tray icon, quitting the app, pausing sync, unlinking an account, and uninstalling the app are not interchangeable. Microsoft documents pausing or quitting OneDrive, unlinking a PC, and uninstalling OneDrive as separate ways to stop or remove the app. Choose the action that matches your goal rather than changing Desktop backup settings just to affect an app icon. See Microsoft’s OneDrive stop and uninstall guidance.

For Dropbox, the icon provides access to the app and its sync and storage status. The available way to hide or move it depends on the operating system and version; consult the relevant OS settings after identifying them. Do not assume quitting Dropbox merely hides its icon.
