Remix Roadmap: What Bytes #321 Previewed for React Router v7

Bytes #321’s September 2024 recap previewed explicit routes.ts configuration, type-safe routing, and focused web-standard packages, but it was not a current release-status report.

What was coming next for Remix? In its September 9, 2024 issue, Bytes #321 recapped a livestream by Ryan Florence and Michael Jackson and previewed three connected ideas: configuring React Router v7 routes in routes.ts, making routes more type-aware, and building small web-standard packages intended to work with or without Remix. These were roadmap directions described in a 2024 newsletter—not confirmation of what is shipping today.

What Bytes #321 said was coming

The issue framed Remix as an “ecosystem of principles, patterns, and packages,” rather than only a framework. Its recap focused on three roadmap themes:

  • Explicit route configuration: A routes.ts file would define React Router v7 routes as an array, rather than relying on a file-based convention.
  • Type-safe routing: The proposed route configuration was described as enabling more intelligent type awareness across an application. The issue did not specify implementation details or quantify a productivity benefit.
  • Focused web-standard packages: The team described small packages, each intended to do one thing, follow web standards, and interoperate both inside and outside Remix. Examples named in the issue were file-storage, form-data-parser, and headers.

The package examples illustrate the broader framing: useful building blocks could have value beyond a single framework. Their inclusion in the newsletter does not establish their present maintenance or release status.

What the route changes would mean

Routes defined in configuration

In the preview, routes would be declared together in an array in routes.ts, instead of being inferred from a file-and-folder naming convention. That points to an explicit configuration model. The newsletter does not lay out the syntax, migration steps, or trade-offs in detail, so it should not be treated as a migration guide.

More type awareness

Bytes connected the proposed configuration to type-safe routing: route information could inform types across an application. It did not promise a particular degree of checking, describe generated types, or claim that every navigation or data operation would become type-safe. Those specifics should be verified in the documentation for the version a team plans to use.

How this fit the project’s development approach

In a November 11, 2022 article, Remix Co-Founder Ryan Florence wrote, “Today we are completely opening up our development process.” The article described a public process in this sequence: “Proposal → Roadmap → RFC → Develop → Ship.” In that account, contributors submitted proposals, administrators accepted work into the roadmap, owners were assigned, and an RFC preceded development. This documents how Remix described its process then; it does not establish that every step remains unchanged.

For historical context, Shopify announced on October 31, 2022 that the Remix team was joining the company. The announcement described Remix as an open-source web framework and said Shopify would use it across projects, including Hydrogen. That announcement does not, by itself, establish current ownership, staffing, roadmap decisions, or runtime support.

What this preview does—and does not—establish

Bytes #321 is an archived account of a 2024 roadmap preview. It establishes what the issue said the team was exploring: array-based route configuration for React Router v7, improved route type awareness, and small web-standard packages. It does not establish whether any individual item has since shipped, changed, or been deprecated. Before relying on one in a project, check the current official React Router or Remix documentation and release materials for the version in question.
