Yes: you can run a Windows 98 guest in a browser using v86, an x86 PC emulator. It is more than a picture of the old desktop, but it is not a complete or guaranteed reproduction of a physical Windows 98 computer. The v86 project says Windows 98 works “reasonably well,” a qualification worth keeping in mind.
What does “Windows 98 in your browser” mean?
v86 emulates an x86 PC in the browser, using an x86-to-WebAssembly just-in-time compiler. Windows 98 runs as a guest operating system inside that emulated computer; the experience is not merely a visual imitation of Windows windows. The v86 project lists Windows 98 alongside several other Windows releases as working “reasonably well.” That describes general compatibility, not support for every device, program, or feature.

How to open the Windows 98 profile
- Visit the v86 Windows 98 profile in a browser. The profile presents Windows 98 as the selected system.
- Start the emulated system using the controls on the page. The interface can change, so follow the current on-screen prompts.
- Allow time for the guest system to start. The emulated machine may not behave as quickly or reliably as a physical PC.
What the image inputs are for
The profile provides optional inputs for CD, floppy, and hard disk images. They let a user supply disk images to the emulated machine; they do not mean that physical discs or drives are required. The profile currently displays a version identifier dated March 31, 2026, but interface and build details may change.

Only use disk images you have the right to use. v86’s code is distributed under the Simplified BSD License, while the project notes that some third-party components have separate licenses. That emulator-code license does not grant a license to Windows 98, commercial software, or any disk image.

What to expect—and what not to assume
- It is an emulated PC: Windows runs as a guest in an x86 emulator, rather than as a modern operating system theme.
- Compatibility is qualified: v86 describes Windows 98 as working reasonably well, not as fully compatible with every application or hardware feature.
- Modern web browsing is not assured: A 2016 account of the experience described Minesweeper and boot options for CD or floppy images, but also reported that browsing a modern website in the emulated browser could stall. Those are historical observations, not guarantees about the current profile.
- It is not a full reproduction of a particular old PC: Emulation does not establish that every device, peripheral, or software package from a physical Windows 98 setup will work.
Why the experience is still worth trying
For a quick nostalgia visit, the browser profile offers a way to explore a Windows 98 guest without setting up a retro computer. The distinction matters: v86 emulates a PC, while a visual simulation would only imitate the desktop’s appearance. The project’s compatibility statement and optional image controls help set expectations, but they do not promise a complete archival or software-compatible replacement for the original hardware.
