To set up a screenless Amazon Echo speaker, plug it in and use the Alexa app: go to Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo, choose the Echo family option, and follow the prompts to connect to Wi-Fi. If the speaker was already set up and your network details changed, update its saved network in the Alexa app instead of starting over.
What you need before setup
- An Echo speaker and its power adapter.
- A phone or other mobile device with the Alexa app installed. Amazon recommends downloading or updating the app before you begin.
- An Amazon account.
- Your home Wi-Fi network name and password.
Amazon’s standard setup guidance covers Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, Echo Dot Kids, and Echo Pop. The exact screens may differ by model and app version. See Amazon’s Echo setup instructions.

Set up a screenless Echo for the first time
- Plug the Echo into power and wait for it to start.
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select Add Device, then Amazon Echo.
- Choose the Echo device family option and follow the app’s prompts to register the speaker and connect it to your home Wi-Fi.
When setup finishes, the app confirms the device is configured. If the app cannot complete setup, see the troubleshooting steps below before resetting the Echo.
Change Wi-Fi on an Echo that is already set up
- In the Alexa app, select Devices and choose the Echo.
- Open Device Settings, then select Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
- Choose a previously connected network, or select Join another Wi-Fi Network and follow the instructions.
This is the route to use after changing your router, Wi-Fi password, or network. Amazon says common home Wi-Fi on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz is supported using 802.11a/b/g/n. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) networks. See Amazon’s instructions for updating Echo Wi-Fi settings.

Setup for the Echo Spot (2024 release)
The Echo Spot (2024 release) has a screen and uses a QR-guided setup route. Plug it in, scan the QR code shown on the screen, then open the guided setup in the Alexa app and follow the prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and install the latest software update. If you prefer, begin manually by selecting Add in the Alexa app. You will need a mobile device, an Amazon account, and your Wi-Fi name and password. Details are in Amazon’s Echo Spot setup guidance.
Other Echo devices with screens may use a different Wi-Fi update process from the screenless-speaker path above. Use the model-specific instructions in the Alexa app or Amazon Help rather than assuming the same menus apply.

If the Echo will not connect to Wi-Fi
Try these checks in order before resetting the speaker:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Restart the Echo. If it lost internet access and did not reconnect, unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Check the router and internet connection. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If that device also cannot connect, restart the router. If several devices are having trouble, the issue may be with the network; wait and try again if there is an outage, or contact your internet provider.
- Verify the password. If other devices connect but the Echo does not, check that the saved Wi-Fi password is correct. If the password changed, update the Echo’s network in the Alexa app using the steps above.
- Move the Echo closer to the router. Amazon recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) and away from possible interference such as microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics. This distance is a troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee of connection.
- Reduce network load temporarily. Turn off some connected devices and try connecting the Echo again to see whether network load is contributing to the problem.
- Try the other Wi-Fi band if your router has separate network names. If the router broadcasts distinct 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs, try the other one. This is a diagnostic option, not a requirement to use a particular band.
- Check the app and try setup again. Confirm that the Alexa app is current and that the internet connection is working. If setup still fails or the device cannot register, consult Amazon’s Echo setup troubleshooting steps; resetting is a later option after the connection checks.
For additional network-specific checks, see Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
