That is a wider range than earlier coverage discussed, but it does not mean every PlayStation 5 can be jailbroken: consoles on newer firmware fall outside the project’s stated compatibility range.
What Relapse supports
The Relapse project describes its exploit chain as compatible with PS5 firmware 7.00–13.60. That range is the project’s stated support, not a guarantee that every console in it will run the chain reliably. Ars Technica reported on September 30, 2026, that the exploit worked up to firmware 13.6 and connected that ceiling with Sony’s mid-September release of version 14.00. The public project’s own range is the more precise compatibility statement.

For a particular console, the relevant comparison is its installed system software version against that range. A console already updated beyond 13.60 is not covered by the project’s stated compatibility. This does not establish that no future exploit could support newer software; it only describes Relapse as publicly documented here.
How the exploit works, at a high level
Relapse is a chain of vulnerabilities rather than a single menu option. The project describes a browser stage followed by a kernel stage. In broad terms, the first stage uses browser-related memory vulnerabilities; the second escalates access to the operating-system kernel. Ars Technica summarized the chain as a WebKit vulnerability leading to kernel write access and an ELF loader.

The project says the chain establishes kernel read/write access and can run unsigned code through payloads. That is significant access, but it should not be confused with a hypervisor exploit or a full custom firmware release. PSN.GG characterizes Relapse as kernel-level and distinguishes it from separate hypervisor-level research. This article does not provide instructions for running the exploit.
What “jailbreak” means in practice
Relapse does not appear to make a permanent change that survives every reboot. PSN.GG reports that it is tethered: after a reboot, the console returns to its ordinary state and the exploit must be launched again. That makes it different from persistent custom firmware.

The project documentation also warns that the browser stage may take several attempts and that the kernel stage can hang or panic the console. Its README says, “The software is provided as-is, without warranty.” It also places responsibility for risks such as instability, data loss, and account bans on users. These are warnings in the project documentation, not a prediction that every attempt will cause those outcomes.

Remaining on an older firmware version can preserve compatibility with a project whose stated ceiling is 13.60, but it can also limit access to newer games and online services that require later system software. The exact requirement depends on the game or service; check its current requirements individually rather than assuming one version applies to all.

That leaves a practical choice for owners of compatible consoles: keep a version within the stated range and accept the limitations and risks, or update for newer software support and lose compatibility with this particular public chain. Updating should not be treated as reversible, and the project’s version range alone does not establish whether any future workaround will exist.

PlayStation LifeStyle reported that Sony released system software 26.06-14.10.00 on October 1, 2026. The update notes quoted in that report say, “We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.” and “We’ve improved system software performance and stability.” The report does not identify Relapse, so the available information does not confirm that this update specifically patches the exploit.
Sony’s product security page accepts vulnerability reports and links to the PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. That provides a channel for security disclosures; it is not, by itself, evidence of a particular response to Relapse.
