Reinstall Your Server OS Before Running DeepSeek: A Safe Setup Plan

Reimaging replaces a server’s operating system; running DeepSeek requires a separate runtime and model or API. Start with the machine you control and the model you plan to use.

Reimaging a server reinstalls or replaces its operating system; it does not install DeepSeek. To run a model, you still need compatible model weights or a hosted API, plus an inference runtime that fits your hardware. First determine whether you control a physical server or a rented instance, then choose the specific DeepSeek model you intend to serve.

What “reimage” means—and what it does not do

A reimage replaces the server’s operating system, typically erasing existing system data in the process. It is an operating-system recovery or setup step, not a DeepSeek installer. After the OS is ready, you must separately configure an inference runtime and obtain model weights, or choose API access instead of hosting inference yourself.

The DeepSeek-R1 model card demonstrates serving with vLLM or SGLang. The vLLM documentation also describes Linux CPU installation paths. Those are software options, not a guarantee that a given machine can run a chosen model at useful speed.

Choose between self-hosting and API access

Self-hosting

With a local inference server, you control the machine, runtime, and model files. You also need to provision suitable compute, memory, storage, networking, and ongoing operations. The model and its precision determine the hardware needs; generic CPU support does not mean every DeepSeek model is practical on a CPU server.

Hosted API

If you do not need to operate the inference hardware, DeepSeek’s API documentation describes an API-compatible interface and currently names deepseek-flash. API model names can change, so check the official DeepSeek API documentation for current names and access details. API use avoids reimaging a server specifically to host inference, though your application still needs a way to call the service and handle its credentials and data appropriately.

Pick the model before choosing server hardware

DeepSeek models differ substantially in size and deployment requirements. A distilled or smaller model should not be assumed to have the same requirements as full DeepSeek-V3, and no single minimum hardware specification is established for every model.

Full DeepSeek-V3

The vLLM deployment recipe describes DeepSeek-V3 as a 671-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, with 37 billion parameters activated per token. For its documented configurations, the recipe specifies:

These are the configurations in the vLLM DeepSeek-V3 recipe, not independent benchmark results or universal requirements for all DeepSeek models. Do not use them to infer that a smaller or distilled model needs the same setup—or that an ordinary CPU server can serve full V3 acceptably.

CPU experimentation

vLLM documents CPU support, with Linux required for its CPU installation path. Consult the current vLLM CPU installation guide for supported setup details. CPU support establishes an available software path; it does not establish acceptable performance for a particular model on your server.

Reimage safely: identify the machine and recovery path

Physical server you control

Before reinstalling, verify you have console access, a known boot or recovery method, and working credentials for the replacement OS. Back up anything you need: reimaging can remove the current installation and its data. If the server supports USB boot, installation media on a USB drive may be one option, but the exact process depends on the hardware and chosen OS.

Rented or provider-managed server

Use the provider’s documented reinstall or rebuild workflow. Controls and consequences vary by provider, and there is no universal dashboard path or boot sequence. Confirm what data the operation preserves or deletes, and make sure you can regain access afterward. Do not assume a physical-server USB procedure applies to a rented instance.

Install the OS, then configure model serving

  1. Confirm your recovery plan. Identify whether you have physical console and boot access or must use a provider’s dashboard or API. Back up needed data and confirm recovery credentials before starting a destructive reinstall.
  2. Install a supported operating system. Follow the process for your specific server or provider. For vLLM’s CPU path, use Linux and consult its current CPU installation documentation rather than relying on generic commands.
  3. Select the runtime for the target model. The DeepSeek-R1 model card demonstrates vLLM and SGLang; the V3 recipe describes deployment configurations for that model. Check the official pages for current commands and versions, which can change.
  4. Obtain model weights from the authoritative model repository, or select an API. Before deployment, check the actual model’s license and the storage, memory, networking, and data-handling needs of your setup.
  5. Test locally before network exposure. Confirm the service responds as expected on the machine before making it reachable from other systems. Serving instructions alone are not a complete security-hardening guide.

What to check before committing to a deployment

  • Model and precision: identify the exact model and intended precision; do not size hardware from the DeepSeek name alone.
  • Compute layout: decide whether the model fits a single machine or requires multi-GPU or multi-node deployment. The cited full-V3 recipe documents specific multi-GPU configurations.
  • Operational control: self-hosting gives you control over the inference environment but leaves provisioning and operation to you; API access shifts inference hosting elsewhere.
  • Data handling: understand where prompts and outputs go, what credentials the service needs, and what exposure your network configuration creates.
  • Current instructions: re-check official runtime, model, and API documentation when installing because supported versions, commands, and API model names may change.
