The Samsung Galaxy XR is a technically ambitious mixed-reality headset with exceptionally sharp displays, effective gaze and hand controls, and Android XR’s floating apps. But its high price, forehead pressure, tethered battery and separately sold controllers make it a difficult buy for anyone who wants a comfortable, ready-to-play headset. Expert Reviews’ hands-on review, published on 20 August 2026, gives it a mixed verdict: impressive technology, with meaningful trade-offs.
What the Samsung Galaxy XR costs—and what you get
Price depends on region and source. Expert Reviews lists a UK reviewed price of £1,699 and says the official controllers cost £200 when bought with the headset or £249 later. Those are the review’s quoted prices, not a guarantee of current UK pricing. Samsung’s US product page displayed $1,799.99 for the 256 GB model on 7 October 2026; Samsung had also announced that amount as the US launch price in October 2025. These are separate regional observations, not directly comparable offers.

The headset is sold without the official controllers. That matters if you want to use Game Link for PC game streaming: Expert Reviews says the official controllers are required. Samsung announced a separate travel case as well. The headset’s 545 g weight excludes its tethered battery, so that figure does not represent the full kit worn or carried.

Samsung specifies Micro-OLED displays with 3,552 × 3,840 pixels per eye and refresh-rate options of 60, 72 or 90 Hz. Its stated field of view is 109° horizontally and 100° vertically. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Expert Reviews praises the image sharpness in use, making display clarity the headset’s clearest strength.

Samsung lists a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform, 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage. The specs suggest a high-end device, but the review reports occasional slowdowns and a limit of four open apps; opening another minimizes the least recently used app. Those are the reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee that every user will encounter identical performance.
How Android XR and controls work
Galaxy XR is the first product on Android XR, a platform developed by Samsung, Google and Qualcomm. Samsung describes Gemini as integrated at system level and presents voice, vision and gestures as ways to interact with the headset. The review reports that Android apps can appear in floating windows, and its reviewer used productivity, video and game apps. That is a report of the reviewer’s experience, not a claim that every app works equally well in XR.
Expert Reviews found gaze selection and hand gestures generally effective, but not infallible: tracking can fail when hands are outside the cameras’ view or when controls sit low in the field of view. The included interaction approach may suit browsing windows and selecting controls, while PC game streaming adds the extra controller cost and requirement.

Comfort, battery and practical drawbacks
The reviewer experienced forehead pressure during extended wear and did not find the fit ideal even after acclimatising. They also noted light leakage around the visor, which affected darker video viewing. These are hands-on observations and may not describe every face or fit, but they are important considerations for a headset intended for long sessions.
Samsung estimates up to two hours of general use or up to 2.5 hours of video watching. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent battery-test results. The battery is separate and tethered, so the headset is not an all-in-one untethered device in the usual sense.

Galaxy XR makes the strongest case for someone who specifically wants Samsung’s high-resolution mixed-reality hardware and Android XR’s spatial app environment, and who accepts the price, battery arrangement and fit trade-offs. It is harder to recommend as a general-purpose headset when controllers for Game Link cost extra and the reviewer encountered comfort and performance limitations.

Expert Reviews names Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 as reference points, but the evidence here does not establish a like-for-like winner. The review described Quest 3 as including controllers and costing around £500 in its UK context; that is a dated reference, not a current price quote. The useful comparison is the whole experience: display quality, comfort, ecosystem, PC gaming support, battery and the total cost of the required kit.
