Reimaging erases data, so first create backups outside the server and confirm you know how to restore them. The exact controls and effects on IP addresses, attached storage, and network settings depend on your hosting provider.
What to check before reimaging
HestiaCP says it must be installed on a fresh operating system installation. Its current Getting Started documentation lists Debian 12 or 13 and Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, or 26.04, with 64-bit AMD64/x86_64 and ARM64/aarch64 architectures. It also says non-LTS operating systems are not supported. Because supported versions can change, check the current HestiaCP requirements before choosing an image.

HestiaCP publishes these resource guidelines: minimum 1 CPU core, 1 GB memory without SpamAssassin and ClamAV, and 10 GB HDD; recommended 4 CPU cores, 4 GB memory, and 40 GB SSD. These are HestiaCP’s stated requirements, not independent performance benchmarks. If your server will run SpamAssassin and ClamAV, do not treat the qualified 1 GB minimum as sufficient for that configuration.

Back up data and confirm it can be restored
A provider-level reimage is destructive. Keep backups somewhere the reimage cannot erase, and make sure you understand the restoration path before confirming the wipe. A backup job or snapshot existing is not the same as having verified that you can recover the data.
HestiaCP documents account backups and restores. The command v-backup-user username creates an account archive; its documented restore command is v-restore-user username backup-file.tar. The restore function accepts backups created by HestiaCP and VestaCP. Follow the HestiaCP backup and restore documentation for the current process, including where the archive is stored and how to move it off the server. HestiaCP also documents remote backup protocols including FTP, SFTP, and Rclone.

A HestiaCP account archive and a provider snapshot are separate recovery layers: the archive is handled through HestiaCP’s backup process, while snapshot creation, retention, and restoration are controlled by the hosting provider. Read the provider’s snapshot rules rather than assuming a snapshot is an independently tested application backup.
Check what your provider’s rebuild will change
There is no universal reimage button or guarantee that server identity and attached resources behave the same across providers. Consult the official documentation for your specific server product and confirm these details before proceeding:

- Which operating-system images and versions are available, and whether the image uses a supported 64-bit architecture.
- Whether rebuilding wipes the root disk and what happens to attached volumes.
- Whether the public IP, hostname, firewall rules, and network settings are retained.
- Whether existing backups or snapshots remain available, and how to restore them.
- How to access the provider console if SSH is unavailable after installation.
The provider examples below illustrate why those details must be checked rather than assumed:
- Vultr Cloud Compute: its server reinstall guide says reinstalling wipes the file system and resets configurations. Its documented console path is Products → Compute → instance → Server Reinstall, followed by confirmation.
- DigitalOcean Droplets: its rebuild guide warns that data without a backup, snapshot, or local copy is irretrievable. It says rebuilding retains the Droplet IP; destroying and recreating a Droplet can release it. That IP behavior is specific to DigitalOcean’s documented rebuild process.
Reimage the server with a supported operating system
- Open the provider’s documented rebuild or reinstall flow for the correct server instance.
- Select a fresh Debian or Ubuntu version currently listed as supported by HestiaCP, and confirm the image is for AMD64/x86_64 or ARM64/aarch64 64-bit systems.
- Check the instance identity and the provider’s final confirmation screen. Do not proceed unless your external backup is available and you accept the stated effects on disks, volumes, IP, hostname, and configuration.
- Submit the rebuild and wait until the provider reports the operating system is ready. The time required depends on the provider and instance; the cited documentation does not establish a universal duration.
Install HestiaCP, then restore and check your services
Connect to the rebuilt server using SSH or the provider console and obtain root access. HestiaCP requires root for installation. Its standard documented flow downloads hst-install.sh from the HestiaCP release repository and runs bash hst-install.sh; use the live installation guide for the current command and available options.

After installation, restore the HestiaCP account archives using its documented procedure. Then check the services and site-specific details your server depends on, such as domains, mail, databases, DNS, certificates, scheduled jobs, and attached storage. The appropriate validation steps depend on the server’s workload; HestiaCP’s restore documentation does not define one universal checklist.

Rebuild the existing server or move to a new one?
Rebuilding in place may preserve an instance identity under a provider’s documented rules, but it still destroys data on the disks being reimaged. Creating a replacement server can keep the old one available while you migrate, but requires transferring data and checking how the new instance’s IP, hostname, storage, and network configuration differ. No universal downtime or migration duration is established by the cited provider guidance.
Choose based on your recovery plan, not on an assumption that either path is automatically safer. Before deciding, compare whether you have a restorable HestiaCP archive, a provider snapshot with known restore behavior, a supported OS image for the target, and a clear plan for preserving or updating network and service settings.
