Nerial, the studio behind Reigns, Card Shark and The Crush House, says it is ending development at the studio after 13 years and 11 published games. The founders call the move “hibernation mode” and say they plan to return to game development after a break; they have not announced a specific reason for the decision.
What Nerial announced
On October 1, 2026, co-founders François and Tamara Alliot said Nerial had decided with its partners at Devolver Digital to end development at the studio. Their statement described the decision as entering “hibernation mode” after 13 years and 11 published games. Game Developer reproduced the announcement.

Game Developer reported that the studio’s remaining employees were being let go. The founders said team members would seek new opportunities and recommended them to prospective studios.

That is not established by the announcement. It says development at the studio is ending, but the founders also signaled an intention to make games again after taking a break: “While this marks the end of Nerial as we know it, it’s not the end of game dev for us.” The wording supports describing a shutdown of studio development, not a confirmed permanent legal dissolution.

Did financial problems cause the decision?
Nerial did not give a specific reason in its announcement. GamesBeat reported that a recent fiscal report described six-figure losses in 2025 due to “significant trading losses” and financial help from Devolver. The report provides context, but it does not establish that those losses caused the studio’s decision; Nerial did not cite them as its reason.
