Regex rules recognize a string’s known shape; entropy heuristics flag strings that look unusually random. Either can help find hardcoded credentials, but neither proves a match is a live secret. In practice, scanners may combine both signals with context, related-pattern matching, or issuer checks to make findings more useful.
What each detection method looks for
Regex rules match a recognizable format
A regular expression describes a pattern of characters, such as a provider-specific prefix followed by a constrained token body, or the delimiters around a private key. This works well when a credential format is known and distinctive. Rules can target provider formats, generic credential shapes, or organization-specific patterns. GitHub documents these categories as regex-based detection and supports custom patterns; its supported-patterns reference lists the formats it detects.

The main advantage is that a specific rule is relatively easy to explain: a string matched the expected structure. The limitation is that the rule depends on that structure being known and present. A changed format, unusual encoding, truncated value, or secret without a recognizable signature may be missed. Making a rule broader can catch more variants but may also flag unrelated text.

Entropy is a measure of uncertainty in a string. A scanner can use an entropy heuristic to surface an opaque, random-looking value even when it does not match a known provider pattern. This can extend coverage beyond a fixed catalog of signatures.
#1 Best Overall
Randomness alone does not identify a credential. Hashes, generated identifiers, fixtures, and encoded data may look random; a weak or human-readable password may not. The Yelp detect-secrets project describes entropy-based detection as one technique in secret scanning, while a comparative study of software secrets reporting notes that ineffective entropy calculation can contribute to false reports.
There is no universal entropy cutoff established by these sources. Thresholds depend on implementation choices such as character alphabet, minimum string length, context, and exclusions, so a threshold from one scanner should not be treated as a general standard.
Why scanners may combine the signals
Regex and entropy are not necessarily competing alternatives. A known-format rule can identify a likely credential by structure, while additional checks—including entropy analysis—can refine a deterministic match. In a July 10, 2026 changelog, GitHub describes its pattern detectors as “deterministic detection (i.e., regular expressions combined with additional checks like entropy analysis).” GitHub’s detector-type changelog describes that product terminology; it is not a controlled comparison of the accuracy of regex and entropy methods.
Other signals can help reduce noise or prioritize response. GitHub documents pattern-pair matching, in which related credential components must be found together in the same file, and validity checks for some patterns. Its secret-scanning documentation also describes generic, custom, and AI-detected secret capabilities. Availability varies by credential pattern, repository type, plan, and enabled features.

Compare scanners by more than their detection label
“Regex-based” or “entropy-based” alone does not tell you whether a scanner fits your workflow. Compare the surrounding coverage and response features:
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Known-format coverage | Which provider and generic formats are recognized, and how are format changes handled? |
| Unrecognized values | Can the scanner flag opaque strings outside its signature catalog, and what controls limit noise? |
| False-positive handling | Does it use context, pair matching, allowlists, filters, confidence levels, or review workflows? |
| Credential validity | Can it check a finding with the issuer, and for which credential types? |
| Scan scope | Does it inspect only current changes, or also repository history, branches, and relevant non-code content? |
| Operational response | Can it block a push, create an alert, or support revocation and remediation? |
GitHub says its secret scanning can inspect repository Git history across branches for hardcoded credentials, but access to capabilities depends on repository type, plan, and enabled features. Its detection-scope documentation explains where scanning applies. For pattern pairs, both elements must be in the same file and pushed to the repository; components split across files or repositories do not generate a pair-detection alert.

Treat a match as an investigation lead
A pattern match does not establish that a credential is active. It may be a test value, expired token, or unrelated string. Where a scanner supports issuer validation, a validity result can help prioritize findings, but coverage is pattern-dependent and is not available for every credential type. Confirm the context and, when appropriate, revoke or rotate a real exposed credential according to the issuer’s process.
