A publisher plugin retrieves the selected baseline, reg-suit compares it with the current images and creates a difference report, then the plugin publishes the new snapshots and report to the configured destination.
How the reference store fits into a reg-suit run
- Your project generates current screenshot images in the configured
actualDir. - A key-generator plugin chooses which prior snapshot set should serve as the expected reference. The official plugin list describes its Git-hash key generator as using the Git branch graph to identify the commit to compare against.
- The publisher plugin retrieves that keyed snapshot set from the configured store into reg-suit’s working directory.
- reg-suit compares the current images with the retrieved references and creates an HTML report of differences.
- The publisher plugin publishes the current snapshots and comparison result. A notifier plugin can also send results to services such as GitHub or GitLab.
The reg-suit README describes run as syncing expected snapshots, comparing, and publishing with notification enabled. Its separate commands make the store’s role especially clear: sync-expected fetches the selected reference set, compare compares it with actual images, and publish uploads the current images and comparison result. Where the reference images are stored
The reference store is not one fixed reg-suit database or a storage service built into every installation. The publisher plugin and project configuration determine the destination. The official README gives AWS S3 and Google Cloud Storage (GCS) as examples; its plugin list describes the S3 publisher as fetching previous snapshots from an S3 bucket and pushing current snapshots and the report, with GCS as another option. A separate community repository documents a GitHub publisher plugin with GitHub Releases and GHCR backends. That is an option documented by that plugin’s maintainers, not evidence that every installation has it or that it is an official reg-viz-maintained publisher. Details are in the plugin repository.

Because the publisher controls storage, the backend, credentials, and retention behavior depend on the plugin and configuration. You cannot tell which store a project uses from the term “reference store” alone.
Where to look in a project configuration
The README’s regconfig.json example has core and plugins sections. In that example, actualDir is required and workingDir is optional, defaulting to .reg. Publisher-specific settings belong in that publisher plugin’s configuration. The README’s S3 example sets bucketName, but that is an example, not a universal setting; it also documents environment-value placeholders for plugin configuration.

regconfig.jsonand identify the configured publisher underplugins. - Check that plugin’s settings to find the destination and any credentials or environment-variable references.
- Check the selected key-generator configuration to understand which earlier snapshot set will be fetched.
- For exact behavior such as retention or authentication, consult the documentation for the configured plugin and storage provider; these are not universal reg-suit settings.
