FFmpeg does not provide a universal native config file for orchestrating a fleet of separate jobs. A manifest centralizes shared defaults and per-stream settings; your launcher turns each entry into its own FFmpeg command. For the same encoded program going to several destinations, use FFmpeg’s tee muxer instead.
Choose the right control model
First decide whether you are managing independent streams or distributing one identical feed. That choice determines whether you need separate FFmpeg jobs or a single process with tee.

FFmpeg’s command-line model handles ordered inputs and outputs, explicit stream maps, and options scoped to the next file; it does not document a universal multi-job orchestration file. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes the underlying model. The manifest-and-launcher design below is an application-level pattern, not built-in FFmpeg syntax.

Store common defaults once and put the settings that differ under each stream. YAML or JSON can work; choose a format your launcher can reliably parse and validate.

frame_rate: 25This is conceptual YAML, not executable FFmpeg configuration. The launcher must read each row, resolve the key reference securely, assemble a command with that stream’s input, explicit maps, encoder options, and destination, then start a separate process. The example server URL is illustrative; obtain the actual server URL and stream key for each YouTube event from Live Control Room.
Keep credentials out of the manifest
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Use YouTube’s stream-settings guidance to locate the event connection details. Store keys in an environment variable or secrets store appropriate to your operating system and deployment; keep secret values out of source control, shared logs, screenshots, and public examples. If a key is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room and update the secret reference used by the launcher.

Make the launcher predictable and recoverable
The launcher is the part that turns centralized settings into running jobs. Treat its behavior as your own deployment design: FFmpeg and YouTube documentation do not prescribe a universal manifest schema, service manager, backoff interval, or credential store.
- Validate before starting. Check each entry for a unique name, a readable input, a YouTube server URL, a resolvable key reference, at least one valid map, and usable encoder settings. Fail clearly rather than silently starting a partial or misconfigured job.
- Build one command per independent stream. Pass options in the order FFmpeg expects: input options before their input, then explicit
-mapselections, encoding options, and the output destination. Keep each job’s settings separate so one stream’s overrides do not accidentally apply to another. - Separate logs and process state. Write a log per stable stream name and record process exits. This helps distinguish a failed input, an authentication problem, an encoder error, and an unreachable destination.
- Use a supervisor for restarts. Return unexpected exits to a service manager or supervisor with an intentional backoff policy. Avoid an immediate, unlimited restart loop: repeated failures can flood logs and obscure the underlying fault.
- Monitor more than process existence. Alert on process exit, stale output, stream-health warnings, and low storage. A live FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Use tee only for the same encoded feed
If one program should be sent to multiple destinations with the same encoded audio and video, FFmpeg’s tee muxer can encode once and fan packets out. It is not a playlist scheduler, and it does not independently control unrelated channels. FFmpeg documents tee in its format documentation.

Tee cannot automatically select streams, so the explicit maps matter. You may also need to specify each output’s format, as shown, and escape special characters in URLs or tee options according to your shell and FFmpeg syntax.
Set YouTube-compatible output and check capacity
Use current YouTube encoder recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and match the output to the sustained capacity of the machine and network. Recommendations can change; check YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring the jobs.

- Choose settings per stream. Set resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current guidance for that output. Put shared values in defaults only when the streams genuinely use the same settings.
- Budget aggregate upload. Add the outgoing bitrates for all concurrent streams, then leave headroom for network variation and other traffic. A connection’s advertised maximum is not proof it can sustain that combined rate continuously.
- Estimate encoding load empirically. Concurrent transcodes consume more resources than a single job. Test the actual inputs, encoders, frame rates, and number of jobs on the hardware you plan to use; there is no documented universal stream count for a given computer.
- Test representative content. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health. Use private or unlisted events for setup checks, then confirm both picture and sound before relying on the workflow.
- Watch local storage. If recording locally, check archive growth and disk capacity. Continuous recordings can fill storage even when the outgoing stream remains healthy.
Account for YouTube’s stream and archive limits
Concurrent streams
YouTube Help says a channel can have 10 active streams, with up to 3 active streams per stream key at once; both limits apply concurrently. These are YouTube account limits, not a promise that a particular encoder or uplink can sustain that many streams. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for the current limits.
Automatic archives are not guaranteed for a 24/7 event
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a complete recording matters, plan a local recording and segmentation strategy or divide the programming into event-length sessions. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
