Choose Reg-suit if you want to run image comparison in your own code and CI workflow; choose Percy if you want a hosted visual-review workflow with managed capture and baseline approvals. The main trade-off is control and setup responsibility versus a more integrated review product. Your choice also depends on how you want to approve changes and whether Percy Web or Percy Automate covers the browser and device combinations you need.
What Reg-suit and Percy do
Reg-suit: a comparison CLI you assemble into a workflow
Reg-suit is a command-line interface for visual regression testing. You supply the images to compare; Reg-suit compares current images with previous ones and generates an HTML difference report. Screenshot capture is therefore usually handled by your application or test setup rather than by Reg-suit itself.

Its documented run flow can sync expected snapshots, compare images, publish current images and the report, and send notifications through configured plugins. The project lists plugins for snapshot-key generation, S3 and Google Cloud Storage publishing, and notifications through GitHub, GitLab, Slack and Chatwork. You can configure the image directory, difference-rate or pixel thresholds, antialias handling, concurrency and optional x-img-diff-js reporting. The README says x-img-diff-js can provide structural information beyond a simple pixel comparison, including indications of inserted or moved image regions. Reg-suit’s repository documentation describes local and CI use; it does not make Reg-suit an all-in-one managed cross-browser capture service.
Percy: hosted capture, comparison and review
Percy captures snapshots during test runs, compares them with approved baselines, and presents visual differences for review. Reviewers can approve changes or request changes before merge, and teams can configure Percy builds to block GitHub merges. Percy creates builds for triggered visual tests and carries approval state across later builds according to its documented workflow. BrowserStack Docs’ Percy workflow documentation describes visual regression as detecting unintended visual changes in an application.

Percy is not a single capture mode: its project type affects browser selection, integration and licensing. Check the relevant Percy project types documentation before choosing.
Reg-suit vs Percy at a glance
| Decision | Reg-suit | Percy |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | CLI run locally or in CI; your team supplies screenshots and configures integrations. | Hosted visual testing and review workflow that captures and compares snapshots. |
| Snapshot storage | External storage plugins are documented, including S3 and Google Cloud Storage. | Builds and snapshots are managed through Percy’s project and build workflow. |
| Baseline approval | A Git-based snapshot-key plugin is available; the cited repository documentation does not describe Percy-style UI approval granularity. | Git baseline management accepts or rejects a whole build; Visual Git supports snapshot-by-snapshot approval. See BrowserStack’s baseline management guide. |
| Browser and device handling | The repository documents a comparison CLI usable locally or in CI, not managed multi-browser capture as a core service. | Percy Web offers latest desktop and mobile browser options selected in project settings. Automate lets users specify desktop or mobile OS, devices and browsers through a BrowserStack Automate session; availability can change, so verify the live supported matrix. |
| Setup responsibility | Your team configures screenshot capture, CI, snapshot keys, storage, thresholds and notifications. | Percy provides more of capture, comparison, review and baseline management, but project setup and integrations remain necessary. |
| Licensing and cost | The open-source CLI itself has no hosted plan price; storage, CI and engineering costs depend on your setup and are not quantified in the cited documentation. | Web requires a Percy license; Automate requires both Percy and Automate licenses. Current plan prices and snapshot limits are not established here, so verify them directly. Percy documentation says free-plan builds expire after 30 days and other plans include one year of build history. |
How baseline approval changes the workflow
The approval unit matters when a page contains many snapshots. With Percy Git baseline management, accepting or rejecting applies to the entire build. Visual Git allows decisions snapshot by snapshot, which can be more suitable when a build contains both expected and unexpected visual changes. Reg-suit’s documented Git key plugin helps identify snapshots, but the cited repository description does not establish a comparable hosted, per-snapshot approval interface. See Percy’s baseline management documentation for the distinction.

Which tool should you choose?
Choose Reg-suit when your team wants to own the workflow
- Your tests already generate deterministic screenshots and you want to keep comparison in your own code and CI.
- You prefer configuring snapshot storage, keys, thresholds and notifications rather than adopting a hosted review workflow.
- Your team has capacity to maintain capture, CI and plugin compatibility.
These are fit recommendations based on Reg-suit’s documented CLI and plugin model, not a performance comparison.

Choose Percy when you want managed visual review
- You want a review interface and approval state integrated with build and pull-request workflows.
- Percy’s available browser choices match your requirements.
- You can select the right project type and account for the corresponding license.
Percy Web is intended for its managed web visual-testing workflow. Consider Automate when you need specified device and browser combinations and have accounted for its additional Automate license. Check the project type documentation for current distinctions.

Questions to settle before committing
- Which system will capture screenshots, and how will you keep them deterministic?
- Do you want snapshots and supporting infrastructure in your own cloud and CI, or a managed product workflow?
- Should reviewers approve an entire build or individual snapshots?
- Which browser and device combinations are essential, and which Percy project type and licenses would cover them?
- What is the total cost after Percy licensing, Automate if applicable, snapshot limits, storage, CI usage and engineering maintenance?
Screenshot capture alternative: ScreenshotNeo
Reg-suit and Percy address visual regression workflows; if you need a straightforward way to capture website screenshots for tests or other developer workflows, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for either product’s baseline review workflow. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.
For a screenshot capture request, create an API key and run this cURL example. The API returns an image response; the example saves it as WebP.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. One request can also return PNG, JPEG or PDF. The broader feature set includes full-page and CSS-selector captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits and delays, request blocking, headers and cookies, timezone and geolocation, caching, signed image links, async jobs, bulk capture and usage reporting.
