To refresh a page after a person has stopped interacting with it, use a JavaScript inactivity timer and reset it when meaningful input occurs. A timed HTML refresh reloads after a fixed interval, while the Page Visibility API detects when a tab is hidden or shown; neither behavior is the same as detecting user inactivity. Choose the trigger that matches what you actually want, and give people control over disruptive updates.
Choose the trigger that matches the behavior
| What should cause an update? | Approach | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A fixed amount of time after the page loads | HTML meta refresh | Reloads the full document after a set delay; it does not check for user input. |
| No relevant keyboard, pointer, or touch input for a period | JavaScript inactivity timer | Runs after the selected inactivity period, provided the timer is allowed to run. |
| The visitor returns to a hidden tab | Page Visibility API | Detects the tab becoming visible so the page can fetch fresh data or take another action. |
Reload after a fixed interval
If the requirement is simply “reload five minutes after the page loads,” a meta refresh is the simplest option. MDN’s example is <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="300" />, where the value is in seconds. MDN says the timer starts after the page has completely loaded, following the load and pageshow events. The 300-second value is an illustration, not a recommended interval. MDN’s meta refresh reference

Place the element in the document’s <head>. This reloads regardless of whether the visitor is reading, typing, or otherwise active, so it is not an inactivity solution. For a page that needs updated information, consider fetching only the data that changed instead of reloading the entire document.

A real inactivity timer needs two parts: a definition of meaningful activity and a timeout that is restarted whenever that activity occurs. The events below are common starting points, but select them for the way people use your page. For example, a touch interface needs touch input considered; a keyboard-driven workflow should reset the timer on keyboard input.

const idleAfterMs = 5 * 60 * 1000;
let idleTimer;
function handleIdle() {
// Prefer prompting before reloading if a visitor may have unsaved work.
const shouldReload = window.confirm("This page has been idle. Reload it now?");
if (shouldReload) window.location.reload();
}
function resetIdleTimer() {
window.clearTimeout(idleTimer);
idleTimer = window.setTimeout(handleIdle, idleAfterMs);
}
["pointerdown", "keydown", "touchstart"].forEach((eventName) => {
document.addEventListener(eventName, resetIdleTimer, { passive: true });
});
resetIdleTimer();
This is an implementation pattern, not a guarantee that every browser will fire the timeout at an exact moment. Browser timers can be delayed, especially in background tabs. The example also treats only the listed events as activity; adapt the event set to the application rather than assuming that all interaction is covered.
In production, a custom prompt or “Update now” action is usually more considerate than an immediate full reload. If a visitor is editing a form, preserve or warn about unsaved data before replacing the page. Provide a way to stop, extend, or adjust the timeout when automatic reload is genuinely necessary.

Update when a visitor returns to a tab
If the goal is to check for current information when someone comes back to a tab, listen for visibilitychange and test document.visibilityState. This detects whether the document is visible or hidden; it does not tell you whether the person has been inactive. MDN’s Page Visibility API reference

});
Replace refreshData() with the page’s actual data-refresh function. A focused or blurred window is not a reliable substitute for visibility: a window can lose focus while its page remains visible. Background and inactive tabs may also have timers throttled, so do not promise an exact update time. A full page reload is not automatically required when only part of the page’s data is stale.

Make timed updates accessible and predictable
An unexpected reload can interrupt reading, destroy form state, or disorient visitors, including people using screen readers. W3C’s informative technique F41 warns that short, unannounced meta-refresh intervals without a way to turn refreshing off can leave screen-reader users too little time to read and may disorient sighted users. It relates to WCAG Success Criteria 2.2.1 (Timing Adjustable), 2.2.4 (Interruptions), and 3.2.5 (Change on Request); whether a particular page conforms depends on its design and applicable WCAG version. W3C Technique F41
- Prefer a clear “Update now” control when an automatic update is not essential. W3C identifies a mechanism for requesting an update as an alternative to automatic updates. W3C’s Change on Request guidance
- Explain what will happen and when; provide an option to pause, extend, or disable timing where applicable.
- Protect unsaved work and avoid moving visitors away from the content they are reading without warning.
- When automatic updating is necessary, update only the content that needs refreshing if that can meet the requirement.
W3C’s F41 guidance puts the principle plainly: “Content developers should avoid periodic refresh and allow users to choose when they want the latest information.”
