To refactor code in IntelliJ IDEA, select the symbol or code fragment, choose the refactoring that matches the change, then inspect any preview or conflicts before applying it. For the documented default Windows/Linux keymap, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T for the Refactor This list; use Ctrl+Z to undo a refactoring. Shortcuts can differ by operating system or customized keymap. This guide follows the IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 Help.
What refactoring does in IntelliJ IDEA
Refactoring changes the structure of source code while aiming to preserve what the application does. JetBrains describes it as “updating the source code without changing the behaviour of the application” in its JavaScript refactoring documentation. The IDE can update code references as part of supported changes, but you still need to inspect the result and run your project’s checks.

Start with the intended change, not a broad text replacement: renaming an identifier, extracting a cohesive fragment into a method, relocating a member, and changing a callable’s parameters are different operations with different effects on callers and references.

How to open the refactoring actions
- Place the caret or select the target. In the editor, select an expression or put the caret on a supported symbol. For a file or folder, select it in the Project tool window.
- Open the refactoring list. On the documented default Windows/Linux keymap, press
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Tto open Refactor This and choose an operation. You can also use the dedicated shortcut for a specific action. - Review the operation’s options. Follow the dialog or inline prompts, check previews and conflicts when offered, then confirm only after the proposed edits match your intent.
- Inspect and test. Review the changed code and run the project’s normal tests or checks. If the change is wrong, JetBrains documents

These shortcuts are documented defaults, not universal bindings. If a shortcut does not work in your keymap, invoke Refactor This or find the action through the IDE’s action search.

Choose the right refactoring

The available refactorings depend on the selected code and language support. JetBrains’ general list also includes Copy/Move, Extract Constant, Extract Field, Extract Parameter, Introduce Variable, Inline, and other actions. Its documented default Windows/Linux shortcuts include Safe Delete (Alt+Delete), Copy/Move (F5/F6), Extract Method (Ctrl+Alt+M), Extract Constant (Ctrl+Alt+C), Extract Field (Ctrl+Alt+F), Extract Parameter (Ctrl+Alt+P), Introduce Variable (Ctrl+Alt+V), Rename (Shift+F6), Inline (Ctrl+Alt+N), and Change Signature (Ctrl+F6). Rename a method and update its usages
- Put the caret on the method name and invoke Rename, normally
Shift+F6on the documented default Windows/Linux keymap. - Enter the new name in the IDE’s rename prompt and review the proposed scope.
- For a public method or another widely used symbol, open the preview and inspect the proposed references in the Find tool window.
- Confirm only when the listed changes are the ones you intend.
Rename is code-aware: it can update references in code rather than merely replacing matching text. It also supports names of files, directories, packages, and modules. Still check the preview, particularly when a public API or many files may be affected. See JetBrains’ Rename refactorings guide.

Extract a method from selected code
- Select the statements or expression that form a coherent unit.
- Invoke Extract Method, normally
Ctrl+Alt+Mon the documented default Windows/Linux keymap. - Choose the new method’s name and review the IDE’s proposed parameters and return value.
- Apply the extraction, then check that the new method and replacement call express the intended logic.
The selected fragment is replaced by a call to the new method. IntelliJ IDEA uses a single detected output variable as the return value. JetBrains documents limitations for generic-type references and for automatically handling multiple outputs; those cases may require a different selection or manual changes. Change a method signature and update callers
- Place the caret on the method and invoke Change Signature, normally
Ctrl+F6on the documented default Windows/Linux keymap. - Make the intended contract changes: rename the method; add, remove, reorder, or rename parameters; or change exceptions.
- If appropriate, choose to propagate a parameter or exception through the call hierarchy.
- Review the affected calls and any reported conflicts before applying the change.
Change Signature is intended to update related call sites along with the method contract. The documented conversion of some method contracts can fail, so review the resulting code and manually adjust any unsupported or conflicting cases. Consult JetBrains’ Change signature documentation.

Move a method or other member
For a static method, the documented Move workflow lets you choose a destination class and preview the result. Select the method, invoke Move (normally F6 in the default Windows/Linux keymap), specify the destination, then inspect the preview before proceeding. Moving changes where a member belongs; it is not a substitute for changing the member’s name or signature. See Move and copy refactorings | IntelliJ IDEA Documentation.
Use previews, Safe Delete, and undo deliberately
- Preview broad edits. Do this for public or widely used symbols and whenever a preview is offered. Inspect affected usages and conflicts rather than confirming on autopilot.
- Use Safe Delete when removing code. It checks whether source-code references remain; it does not replace your own review of whether removal is correct.
- Undo promptly if the result is wrong. JetBrains documents
Ctrl+Zfor undoing a refactoring. Then choose a narrower target or revise the operation. - Run project checks after applying. A successful IDE refactoring is not evidence that the application was tested or that runtime behavior is unchanged.
