You can cut notification clutter without turning every app off: adjust noisy apps individually, make low-priority alerts less intrusive or deliver them in a batch, and use a scheduled Focus or Mode when you need a temporary filter. The exact controls depend on your phone, software version and the options each app supports.
Choose the right level of filtering
Start with the narrowest control that solves the problem. An app-specific setting affects one source; an app category can separate types of alerts within that source; a Focus or Mode filters notifications for a particular time or activity. Presentation controls—such as sound, banners and lock-screen visibility—can reduce interruptions without preventing an alert from arriving.
| Control | Scope | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-app settings | One app | Reducing noise from a specific source | Whether the app offers separate notification types |
| Silent or less-visible delivery | One app or category, where supported | Keeping notices available without a sound or prominent display | How the device presents silent alerts and lock-screen notices |
| Scheduled Summary | Selected iPhone apps | Checking lower-priority notifications at chosen times | Keep time-sensitive alerts immediate where that choice is available |
| Focus or Mode | A time window or activity | Temporarily filtering interruptions while allowing chosen people or apps | Allowed-list entries, schedules and critical-alert behavior |
Reduce notification clutter on iPhone
Adjust the app that is making the noise
- Open Settings > Notifications, then select the app.
- Choose where its notifications can appear, such as the Lock Screen, Notification Center or as banners. Adjust sounds, badges and previews separately to match how much attention the app deserves.
- If the app offers Customize Notifications, use it to change supported alert types individually. Some apps also provide notification controls inside the app itself; not every app has category-level options.
Apple’s iPhone guide for iOS 27 describes these per-app controls and notes that available options depend on the app. See Apple’s iPhone notification settings guide.

Batch lower-priority alerts with Scheduled Summary
Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, turn on the summary, choose delivery times and select the apps to include. This is useful for notices you want to catch up on but do not need to see immediately. Keep urgent communication on immediate delivery when that option is available.
Filter a particular activity with Focus
Open Settings > Focus, choose a Focus or create one, then select the people and apps allowed to notify you. Add a schedule if you want it to activate at regular times. Check the allowed lists before relying on the filter so you know which notifications can still get through. Apple describes Focus as a way to filter notifications during a period reserved for an activity; its cited setup guide is versioned to iOS 26. See Apple’s Focus setup guide.

Treat Apple Intelligence options as optional
On supported iPhones, Apple Intelligence can summarize notifications and offer a Reduce Interruptions Focus. These features depend on eligible hardware and supported language and region, so they are not baseline instructions for every iPhone. Details are in Apple’s notification summaries and Reduce Interruptions guide.
Reduce notification clutter on Android
Turn down a noisy app or category
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, then choose the app. If those labels differ, search Settings for “Notifications.”
- Turn off only the categories you do not want if the phone exposes categories; leave useful types enabled. Some apps have additional notification controls in their own settings.
- Where offered, change low-priority alerts from alerting to Silent. Google says silent notifications remain in the notification shade without sound or vibration. If the main issue is visual clutter, also review notification dots and lock-screen display settings.
Android menus and features vary by device and manufacturer, so the route and available categories are not universal. Google’s Android notification controls guide covers app notifications, silent delivery and notification history; category instructions are also available in its category-specific guide.

Use a Mode for a defined time or activity
Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb, or choose a custom Mode, then set filters for people, apps and interruption types. Add a schedule when you want the filter to turn on automatically. Names and controls vary by device, and Google notes that some Mode instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Review Google’s Modes and Do Not Disturb guide for the relevant device guidance.
Do not assume that every system or emergency notice follows the same rules as ordinary app notifications. Check the alert settings and regional rules on your own device; Google’s Modes guidance also identifies critical notifications as an exception to ordinary filtering.

Apply changes gradually and check what gets through
- For a few days, notice which apps and types of alerts interrupt you repeatedly.
- Change one source at a time. Try removing its sound or banner, hiding it from the lock screen, setting it to Silent, or including it in Scheduled Summary when supported.
- For a particular context, create a Focus or Mode and inspect its allowed people, apps and alert exceptions before turning it on.
- After using the new setup, restore a missed app or category, or change its delivery method. There is no need to undo filters that are working.
When notification controls differ
- On iPhone: the cited notification guide is for iOS 27, while the cited Focus guide is for iOS 26. Your installed version may show different features or labels.
- On Android: settings vary by manufacturer and device, and some Modes instructions require Android 14 or later. Search Settings for “Notifications” if a menu path does not match.
- Across both platforms: an app may not offer category-level controls, and emergency or critical alerts can follow separate rules. Check the options on your device instead of assuming every alert can be filtered in the same way.
