The REDMAGIC Astra 2 is a compact, high-performance Android gaming tablet built around a 9.06-inch OLED screen, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a listed maximum refresh rate of 185Hz. Its 363g weight makes it easier to carry than a large tablet, but the small display, uneven software polish and high launch pricing make it a specialized buy rather than an obvious choice for everyone.
Is the REDMAGIC Astra 2 worth buying?
It is worth considering if you want a small Android tablet for demanding games and value portability and fast hardware above a larger viewing area or a polished, uncluttered software experience. The hardware is compelling on paper, and TechRadar reported very strong performance in its review. The trade-off is that the Astra 2 costs substantially more than its predecessor did at launch, while its most attention-grabbing display feature is not supported by most games.

For owners of the original Astra, the upgrade case depends on whether the current tablet struggles with the games they play. REDMAGIC says that if an Astra already handles those games comfortably, there may be no immediate reason to upgrade. REDMAGIC’s comparison and upgrade guidance frames the Astra 2 as an evolution, not a necessary replacement for every owner.

The Astra 2 pairs a 9.06-inch, 2,400 × 1,504 OLED panel with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. REDMAGIC lists its RedCore R4 gaming chip, AquaCore Cooling System 2.0 and Liquid Metal 3.0 cooling as part of the design. These are manufacturer specifications and engineering claims, not proof that every game will maintain a particular frame rate or temperature.

China-market naming also differs: GSMArena identifies the Astra 2 as the Gaming Tablet 5 Pro in China. That name alone does not establish that Chinese and global configurations are identical. GSMArena’s review provides that naming context.
How powerful is it for gaming?
TechRadar describes the tablet as very fast and reports Geekbench 6 scores of 3,725 in single-core and 11,678 in multi-core testing. In that review, Destiny: Rising ran smoothly at either High Rendering Quality with Ultra Frame Rate (120fps), or Ultra rendering quality with High Frame Rate (60fps). These are results reported by that reviewer, not a guarantee for other games, settings or devices.

The processor and dedicated gaming hardware give the Astra 2 a strong performance proposition. REDMAGIC’s cooling system is designed to manage heat, but the available review evidence does not establish a controlled comparison across games that would justify a universal claim about sustained frame rates, temperatures or superiority over competing tablets. Actual results depend on the game, software, environment and settings.
What does the 185Hz screen mean in practice?
The panel’s 185Hz figure is its listed maximum refresh rate, not a promise that games will render at 185 frames per second. The game must support a high frame-rate mode, and its optimization, version and region can affect whether that option is available. TechRadar says few games use the display’s maximum rate; REDMAGIC also cautions that support varies. A compatible game can still benefit from a high-refresh display at a lower frame rate, but the headline number will not transform every game.

The 9.06-inch OLED display offers sharpness and the contrast associated with OLED, but it is still a small screen by tablet standards. TechRadar notes that its 16:10 aspect ratio may not suit every landscape action game. The portrait orientation can be more versatile for reading and browsing, and the review lists Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
Portability, software and everyday compromises
Easy to carry, limited in screen area
At 363g and 6.9mm thick, the Astra 2 is notably portable for a gaming-focused tablet. That makes it attractive for play away from a desk or for users who also want a compact reading and browsing device. The same compact size means less room for game controls and less viewing area than a larger tablet provides.

Software polish is the main review caveat
The tablet runs Android 16 with REDMAGIC OS 11.5. TechRadar praised the hardware and gaming performance but described the software experience as cluttered and unpolished. That is the reviewer’s assessment of usability, rather than a measurable hardware limitation; readers who prioritize a clean interface should weigh it alongside the strong specifications.

REDMAGIC lists an 8,300mAh typical battery and 75W charging. Battery life and charging time are not fixed outcomes: REDMAGIC says they vary with use and test conditions. The Malaysia product page lists a Type-C cable and says the charger is not included, so check the contents of the local package rather than assuming a wall charger comes in the box. The Malaysia product specification page gives that market’s package detail.

Connectivity claims also vary by region and source. REDMAGIC Singapore’s July launch article lists Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 6.0, and describes wired output up to 4K@120Hz or 8K@30Hz. Its dual USB-C ports are described as supporting audio and charging up to 75W. A later global comparison lists Wi-Fi 7 instead. Do not treat those different regional statements as one universal specification; consult the sheet for the exact market and configuration. REDMAGIC Singapore’s launch details are specific to its regional page.
Launch pricing and availability
TechRadar reported global shipping beginning August 26, 2026, with availability in the US, UK, Australia and much of Europe. Its August 19, 2026 review gave launch prices of $749 / £599 for the 12GB/256GB model and $849 / £679 for 16GB/512GB. It separately reported Australian global prices of $699 and $799 for those configurations. These are dated, market-specific launch reports, not current price guarantees; stock, taxes, shipping and local pricing may have changed. Check the seller serving your region before deciding.
TechRadar also described the starting price as $200 / £160 above the original Astra’s launch price. That comparison applies to the launch pricing reported in its review, rather than a current price comparison. TechRadar’s review covers its performance observations, limitations and dated pricing.

Who should choose the Astra 2?
- Consider it if you want a small, powerful Android gaming tablet and are comfortable paying a premium for its portability and gaming hardware.
- Look elsewhere if you want a larger screen, expect every game to run at 185fps, or put a polished software experience ahead of gaming-focused specifications.
- Original Astra owners: weigh the upgrade against your actual games and current performance; the manufacturer does not recommend replacing a tablet that already runs them comfortably.
- Before buying: verify the local connectivity sheet, available memory and storage configuration, package contents, current price and regional stock.
