The RedMagic Astra 2 is a compact Android gaming tablet whose 9.06-inch, 185Hz OLED display is its clearest advantage. In Anthony Spadafora’s hands-on review for Tom’s Guide, it also outscored the iPad mini 7 and Lenovo Tab Gen 2 in the publication’s reported performance tests. But its dated review prices start at $699, its battery test trails Lenovo’s, and the layout can make a controller awkward to use. It suits buyers who prioritize a small, fast-screen gaming tablet over the lowest price or the simplest handheld setup.
What makes the Astra 2 stand out?
The display is the defining feature in Spadafora’s review. Tom’s Guide reports a 9.06-inch OLED panel with a 2,400 × 1,504 resolution and a 185Hz refresh rate. The combination gives this compact tablet a sharper, faster-refreshing screen than a typical general-purpose tablet, while OLED supplies the contrast that makes games and video pop.

In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 measurements, the panel reached 659 nits in SDR and 1,030 nits in HDR. The review also measured 198.8% sRGB coverage, 141.5% DCI-P3 coverage, and a 0.31 Delta-E color error result. These are the publication’s measurements of its review unit, not guaranteed results for every unit or viewing condition.

How does its performance compare?
Tom’s Guide reports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with either 12GB of LPDDR5X memory and 256GB storage or 16GB and 512GB. In the review’s benchmark results, the Astra 2 led the iPad mini 7 and Lenovo Tab Gen 2 in both Geekbench 6 and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited:

| Lenovo Tab Gen 2 | 1,125 | 3,417 | 1,063 / 6.37 fps |
These are the figures Tom’s Guide reported in its 2026 tests. They show how the three devices performed in those benchmarks; they do not establish that every game will run at a particular frame rate or that the tests were conducted under identical conditions.

The reviewer played demanding Android games and also tried PC games through the separately downloaded GameHub app. The experience was mixed, so treat GameHub as an optional experiment rather than a promise that all PC games will work smoothly. The Astra 2 is still an Android tablet: check whether the games and services you actually use are supported before choosing it over another platform.

In that test, the Astra 2 lasted longer than the iPad mini 7 at 60Hz, but Lenovo lasted longer at both of its tested refresh rates. The Astra 2’s 60Hz and 185Hz results were relatively close in this particular test; real battery life can vary with brightness, apps, network use, and gaming load.
Is it portable, and what are the trade-offs?
The Astra 2 measures 8.15 × 5.28 × 0.27 inches and weighs 0.8 pounds (363g), according to Tom’s Guide. Its 9.06-inch screen makes it a small tablet rather than a full-size gaming slate. The listed hardware also includes an 8,300mAh battery, 9MP front and 13MP rear cameras, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0.

Tom’s Guide reports two USB-C ports: one USB 3.2 Gen 2 port with DisplayPort and one USB 2.0 port. The review describes using the tablet with an external display and connecting USB-C smart glasses for film viewing. The more capable port’s position is a practical drawback for handheld play: Spadafora found a Razer Kishi Ultra setup awkward because of the port placement. A telescopic controller may suit some players, but do not assume a particular controller will fit or connect comfortably without checking its compatibility and layout.
The review also notes that a case is not included. If you plan to carry the tablet or prop it up for play and video, factor in finding a compatible case or stand; the review does not verify a specific case model.

What did it cost in the review?
Tom’s Guide listed prices of $699 for the 12GB/256GB configuration and $799 for the 16GB/512GB configuration in its September 26, 2026 review. Those are dated review prices, not confirmed current offers; stock and pricing can vary by seller and region.
The higher-capacity model adds memory and storage, but the available information does not establish a performance difference between the two configurations. Choose based on your storage needs and the price you can verify at purchase, rather than assuming the larger model is necessary for gaming.
Who should consider the RedMagic Astra 2?
- Consider it if: you want a compact Android tablet with a high-refresh OLED display and strong performance in the benchmarks reported by Tom’s Guide.
- Think twice if: long battery life is your top priority, you need a convenient controller fit, or you expect a case to be included.
- Check before buying: whether your preferred games run on Android, whether GameHub supports the PC titles you care about, and whether your controller, display adapter, or case fits your intended setup.
The Astra 2’s appeal is specific: it combines a small form factor with an unusually capable display and gaming-focused hardware. The review makes a strong case for its screen and benchmark performance, but its controller ergonomics, missing case, and battery comparison matter if you want one device to serve as a friction-free handheld or all-day tablet.
