Best Smartphones of 2026: A Practical Buying Guide

TechRadar’s 2026 shortlist spans premium iPhones, a feature-rich Android flagship and a lower-cost Pixel. Compare their reported specs and choose by budget, size, camera needs and platform.

There is no single best smartphone for everyone in 2026. In TechRadar’s current guide, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are its top iPhone picks, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is its top Android pick, and the Google Pixel 10a is its budget choice. The right one for you depends on price and availability where you live, your preferred operating system, camera needs, screen size, battery priorities, and how much software complexity you want.

These are TechRadar’s category selections, based on its lab testing and reviewer experience—not a universal ranking or a new side-by-side test. Check current US pricing, stock, and the exact regional model before buying.

How to choose the right phone

Start with the trade-offs that matter in daily use rather than choosing by headline specifications alone.

  • Platform and ecosystem: If you prefer iOS or already rely on Apple devices, consider the iPhone 18 Pro models. If Android is your preference, compare the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s feature-rich approach with the Pixel 10a’s lower-cost positioning.
  • Budget: The Pixel 10a is TechRadar’s budget pick and is described in its guide as under $500. Confirm the current price in your market; promotions and regional availability can change its value.
  • Camera use: The Galaxy S26 Ultra offers two telephoto cameras with 3x and 5x optical zoom. The iPhone Pro models have main, ultra-wide, and telephoto cameras, and TechRadar reports a variable-aperture main camera. The Pixel 10a has main and ultra-wide rear cameras.
  • Size and handling: The shortlist spans 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays. A larger screen can suit media and multitasking, but may be less comfortable for one-handed use; try the exact model if handling matters to you.
  • Battery expectations: Review test results can help compare phones within one publication’s method, but do not treat them as guaranteed runtimes or assume different publications’ tests are equivalent.
  • Storage and support: The Pixel 10a is reported with 128GB and 256GB storage options. TechRadar’s guide reports seven years of updates for both the Pixel 10a and Galaxy S26 Ultra; check the manufacturer’s current terms for your region and model.

TechRadar’s 2026 shortlist

The figures below are reported in TechRadar’s 2026 guide. Battery durations are results from its Future Labs test, not promises of everyday screen-on time. Real use varies with settings, signal, apps, and workload.

Which iPhone 18 Pro should you consider?

TechRadar selects the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max jointly as its best iPhones. Both are reported to have 48MP main, ultra-wide, and telephoto rear cameras, plus a variable-aperture main camera. The guide describes that camera design as helping deliver more natural background blur and control over focus; reviewer Jacob Krol characterized the results as “better details, more natural blurring and focus points, and excellent highlights.”

Choose by size and tested endurance

The Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display. In TechRadar Future Labs’ test, the Pro ran for 16 hours 17 minutes and the Pro Max for 18 hours 27 minutes. Those are results from that publication’s test method, not guaranteed daily runtimes.

Consider the upgrade trade-off

TechRadar describes the Pro models as expensive and their changes as iterative for owners of the prior generation. If you already have a recent iPhone, weigh the specific camera or screen improvements you would use against the cost of upgrading rather than assuming a new generation is automatically worthwhile.

When the Galaxy S26 Ultra makes sense

TechRadar names the Galaxy S26 Ultra its best Android phone. Its reported rear camera setup combines a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultra-wide, and two telephoto cameras offering 3x and 5x optical zoom. That spread is useful for buyers who want different framing options without relying only on digital cropping.

The guide reports a 6.9-inch screen, a 5,000mAh battery, seven years of upgrades, and a 16-hour-10-minute Future Labs battery-test result. These details make it a feature-dense flagship candidate, but the guide also cautions that its many software features may feel like too much for someone who wants a simpler phone. Try the interface or review its settings and apps if ease of use is a priority.

Why the Pixel 10a is the budget pick

TechRadar calls the Google Pixel 10a its best budget phone and describes it as under $500. Treat that as the guide’s positioning, not a guaranteed price: local pricing, discounts, and stock may differ. Its cited specifications include a 6.3-inch display, a 5,100mAh battery, 48MP main and 13MP ultra-wide cameras, and 128GB or 256GB storage choices.

The guide says Google offers seven years of major Android OS and security updates. Before purchase, verify the price, storage variant, availability, and exact support terms for the phone in your country. Google’s US phone store is at Google Store phones.

How to interpret the battery figures

TechRadar’s Future Labs results give one consistent point of reference within that guide: 16 hours 17 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 hours 27 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and 16 hours 10 minutes for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. They do not establish how long a particular person’s phone will last between charges. Screen brightness, mobile coverage, camera use, gaming, and background activity can all affect runtime. The guide does not state a Pixel 10a battery-test duration, so the listed 5,100mAh capacity should not be mistaken for a tested runtime.

Check before you buy

  1. Confirm the exact model and region. Product names, storage options, network compatibility, and availability can vary by market. Check the manufacturer’s page for the model sold where you live.
  2. Compare the current total price. Look at the storage variant you actually want and account for any required accessories. Prices and promotions change; the shortlist does not establish today’s local price.
  3. Decide whether size and software suit you. Compare the 6.3-inch models with the 6.9-inch options in person if possible, and consider whether you prefer a simpler interface or a larger set of features.
  4. Match camera hardware to your habits. Optical zoom can matter for distant subjects; a main and ultra-wide setup may be enough for everyday scenes. Think about the photos and videos you actually take.
  5. Verify support claims. Check the current manufacturer support terms for your country and the exact device before relying on an update period.

TechRadar’s ranking is a useful starting point, not a universal answer. Consumer Reports’ search listing described its roundup as lab-tested and highlighted battery life and camera setup, but its detailed rankings and methodology are not established here. For a decision, compare the exact models and current local terms that matter to you.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
