Redis by Proxy: Percona Targets a Major Hurdle to Valkey Adoption

Percona is developing an open-source proxy to reduce application changes when moving from a single Redis endpoint to Valkey Cluster. Release dates and compatibility remain unconfirmed.

Percona is developing an open-source proxy intended to let applications built for a single Redis instance connect to a Valkey Cluster with less application-side rewriting. The proposal targets a real migration friction point, but it is not yet evidence that the problem is solved: The New Stack’s October 8, 2026 report described public code, a release candidate and general availability as future targets, and did not establish that any had been delivered.

What Percona’s Valkey proxy is meant to do

Valkey-proxy is a planned intermediary between an application and a Valkey Cluster. The aim is to present a simpler connection point to software that expects to talk to one Redis instance, while the proxy handles aspects of communicating with the cluster. Percona’s goal, as reported by The New Stack, is to reduce the amount of application code teams need to change when moving to clustered Valkey.

That is an intended compatibility layer, not a promise of a drop-in migration. The report does not specify supported commands, clients, application patterns, or the proxy’s handling of cluster-specific behavior. Until those details and implementation results are public, teams should treat “without rewriting their apps” as the project’s objective—not a verified outcome for every Redis application.

Why moving from one Redis endpoint to a cluster can require changes

An application designed around a single Redis endpoint can make assumptions that no longer hold when its data service is distributed across cluster nodes. The migration challenge described in the report includes node topology, routing requests to the right place, and differences in command behavior. Merely replacing a server binary does not necessarily resolve those application-level assumptions.

Percona’s proposal is to put a proxy between the application and Valkey Cluster so teams may not have to build all of that cluster awareness into their applications themselves. That could reduce migration work, but it does not establish that every difference in commands, transactions, failure behavior, security configuration, or operations disappears. Those are among the areas a prospective user would need to assess against the proxy’s eventual documentation and testing.

What was announced—and what was still a plan

The New Stack reported that Percona had developed an initial version internally, received approval in late September 2026 for the project to become part of Valkey, and was moving code from private repositories into the public project. The report gave these target dates:

What the Freshworks partnership does—and does not—show

The report identifies Freshworks as an early user and design partner working with Percona to uncover issues during development. That is evidence of early participation, not a published validation result. The report includes no compatibility matrix, workload description, benchmark, production-readiness assessment, or test methodology, so it cannot support a claim of universal compatibility or proven production performance.

How to evaluate the proxy when implementation details are available

Before relying on a proxy to make a migration transparent, technical teams should look for concrete answers to questions the announcement did not settle:

  • Protocol and command coverage: Which Redis-compatible commands and Valkey features are supported, and what happens when an application uses an unsupported command?
  • Application patterns: Which clients and connection behaviors have been tested, including scripts, transactions, and pub/sub?
  • Routing and failures: How does the proxy route requests across nodes, and what should applications expect during node failure or failover?
  • Security and operations: What are the authentication and TLS requirements, deployment options, and observability features?
  • Maturity and governance: Is the code public, what license and release status apply, and how are maintenance and project participation handled?
  • Evidence: Are there reproducible compatibility tests or independent workload results relevant to your own application?

These are evaluation criteria, not claims that the proxy already supports each capability. A pilot using the actual client, commands, topology, and failure scenarios of the intended deployment is more informative than the project’s broad compatibility goal alone.

How this fits Percona’s Valkey work

Percona separately publishes Valkey packages and migration guidance, and offers Valkey database support. Those materials establish that Percona works with Valkey; they do not establish that its support services cover Valkey-proxy specifically.

Percona’s general manager for the Redis/Valkey ecosystem, Kyle Davis, told The New Stack that “there’s not really any good open source solution for this.” That is Davis’s assessment of the available options, not an independently established survey. The report also notes his view that Envoy does not fully understand the Valkey protocol and cannot support everything Valkey can do; it provides no head-to-head test, so this should not be treated as a settled comparative finding.
