Tom’s Guide writer Elton Jones says he asked ChatGPT to plan an affordable fall weekend in New York City with a $100 budget. The itinerary pointed him toward free events and a fungi festival—and, in his telling, revived the delight of a school field trip. It’s a personal account, not proof that AI planning gets everyone out of the house. The useful lesson is more practical: ChatGPT can generate a promising itinerary, but event details and costs still need checking.
What ChatGPT planned for the $100 weekend
In an article published October 8, 2026, Jones shared this prompt: “I only have $100. Plan a perfect fall weekend with the most fun and affordable activities for me in New York City, with that in mind.” He described a three-day plan that mixed free activities with inexpensive food and other possible purchases. The figures below are the article’s estimates, not independently audited totals.

| Day | What the article reports | Estimated cost reported |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | A free museum visit, an evening walk and an inexpensive dinner. The article highlighted MoMA’s UNIQLO Friday Nights, which it described as free for New York State residents from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with an advance reservation. | $18 |
| Saturday | ALIVE NYC by Daybreaker, the African Restaurant Week Festival and Kréol Fest 2026 were listed as free possibilities in Brooklyn; the article mentioned RSVP for some. | $35 |
| Sunday | A Central Park outing followed by the NYC Fungus Festival at The Battery. The article described the festival as free and mentioned mushroom discussions, nature walks, workshops, local artists and food vendors. It said the main plan and backup purchases brought the weekend to the $100 limit. | The article says Sunday’s plan and backup purchases used the remaining budget; it does not give a separate Sunday estimate. |
These are descriptions of what Jones reported, not current venue guidance. The event listings and MoMA admission details have not been independently confirmed here. Dates, hours, eligibility, admission and reservation requirements can change, so do not rely on the article’s listings as a current schedule.
Why the fungi festival mattered to the writer
Jones said the festival brought back the feeling of childhood field trips. That is the story’s personal payoff: an unusual activity prompted him to reconnect with a kind of curiosity he felt he had lost. It is not evidence that ChatGPT use improves wellbeing or that other people will have the same reaction.

How to use ChatGPT for a local weekend plan
ChatGPT can help turn a place, time frame, interests and budget into activity ideas. OpenAI’s travel examples include building itineraries, budgeting for trips and finding local events. To get a plan that is more usable than a generic list, specify:

- Your exact city or neighborhood and the dates you plan to go.
- Your total spending limit, including transit, food, tickets and taxes or fees.
- Your interests, preferred pace and whether you want indoor or outdoor activities.
- Mobility or accessibility needs, dietary constraints and weather preferences.
- A source link and a backup option for each time-sensitive event.
Then ask it to show the estimated cost of each item and the travel time between stops. Make clear whether the budget is a hard ceiling, and ask it to leave a buffer for unplanned expenses rather than spending every dollar on paper.

ChatGPT’s web search can surface current information and links, but a result is not the same as confirmation from the venue. OpenAI’s help page on searching the web says local results may use approximate location and cautions that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.

- Open the organizer or venue’s own listing. Confirm the event is happening on your chosen date and at the stated location.
- Check the full cost and eligibility. Look for ticket charges, required purchases, residency rules, fees and whether “free” requires advance booking.
- Confirm logistics. Verify opening hours, RSVP or reservation rules, transit time and whether the activity is indoors or outdoors.
- Recheck close to departure. Event schedules and weather-dependent plans can change; keep a nearby alternative in case a listing falls through.
Those checks matter especially for the particular 2026 events in Jones’s account: the cited article provides the reported details, but authoritative organizer confirmation for the named festival listings and the specific MoMA policy was not established here.

The article is a useful example of AI-assisted discovery: a prompt with a location, season and budget produced a draft itinerary that included options the writer says he had not considered. Its $18 Friday and $35 Saturday estimates, and its claim that Sunday’s plan and backups used the remaining budget, are story-specific estimates—not a guarantee that another visitor can repeat the weekend for $100.

Use the itinerary as a starting point, not a booking plan. Compare the actual out-of-pocket cost, neighborhood and travel time, hours, setting and reservation requirements against your own needs. The activities that made this outing memorable were ultimately real-world experiences; ChatGPT helped surface possibilities, while the details still needed verification.
