To bring customer trust back, first find what has damaged it—not just what looks dated. Diagnose where people lose confidence, then fix the behavior behind it: unclear data use, constrained choices, unreliable tasks, confusing feedback, or poor recovery. A visual redesign can make those improvements easier to understand, but it cannot substitute for sound privacy practices or verified security.
Find the trust break before redesigning screens
“What to fix to bring customer trust back” has no universal screen-by-screen answer. The priority depends on what users experience in this app. Start with a short diagnosis that combines what customers report with what they actually encounter.
- Review support contacts and app-store reviews for recurring concerns, especially around privacy, account access, payments, and failed transactions.
- Inspect task funnels for abandonment, repeated attempts, and steps where users change their minds or seek help.
- Look at permission opt-outs and settings changes alongside the feature that prompted them.
- Observe usability sessions focused on core tasks, including what people think the app is doing and what they expect to happen next.
- Check reliability incidents and support issues against the affected user journeys.
Separate a visual dislike from a deeper trust break. A dated interface may be frustrating, but unexplained data collection, uncertain payment status, or lost work points to a more consequential problem. These are diagnostic signals, not standalone measures of trust; interpret them in the context of customer feedback and observed tasks.
Make data collection and permissions proportionate
Users should be able to understand why the app needs information or access, what the app will do with it, and how to change their choices. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines advise: “Be fully transparent about what your product does and why.” They also recommend collecting only what the product needs to function and handling it with care (Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Designing for privacy).

Map each request to a user task
List the data collected and permissions requested, when each request appears, which feature depends on it, where the data goes, and how a user can change or withdraw a choice. Then ask whether the request is necessary for the task in progress. Avoid asking for access before a user reaches a feature that needs it.
Explain the request at the moment it matters
Use plain language to say why the information or permission is needed and what the feature will do with it. Android’s Core App Quality guidance says sensitive permissions should be directly related to core use cases and their implications prominently disclosed (Android Developers: Core app quality guidelines). Platform rules and implementation details differ; make the explanation accurate to the actual data flow, not merely reassuring.

Remove choices that feel coercive or deceptive
Review consent and privacy settings, notification prompts, recurring payments, cancellation, and account deletion. Compare the options as a user would: are equivalent choices similarly visible and understandable? Can someone decline, change a decision, or leave without needless obstacles? Are the consequences clear before they commit?
The European Data Protection Board’s Guidelines 03/2022 on deceptive design patterns in social media platform interfaces address deceptive patterns specifically in social media interfaces; the final version is dated 24 February 2023. That scope should not be generalized into a legal conclusion for every app. Check the requirements that apply to the product’s market and category.

Make core tasks predictable and recoverable
People need to know whether an action is working, complete, blocked, or failed—and what they can do next. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines put it this way: “Give them the freedom to act, keep them informed about what’s happening, and make it easy to recover from mistakes” (Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Designing for privacy).
- Use consistent controls and familiar conventions for the platform the app runs on.
- Show useful status and error feedback, especially for consequential actions such as sending a payment or saving account changes.
- Preserve entered information and in-progress work through navigation and common interruptions when it is safe to do so.
- Make it straightforward to go back or undo actions that can be reversed.
- Test standard back navigation and whether state is restored after users leave and return. Android’s Core App Quality guidance includes checks for both behaviors (Android Developers: Core app quality guidelines).
Put accessibility and reliability in acceptance criteria
A redesign that looks polished but fails for users with different access needs, devices, or network conditions remains unpredictable. Make accessibility and interruption handling explicit parts of acceptance, not a final visual review.

- Check readable text, contrast, themes, touch-target size, and behavior across screen sizes.
- Verify that people can complete key flows with assistive technology.
- Exercise core tasks when notifications or calls interrupt, when connectivity changes, and when users leave and return to the app.
- For Android, the Core App Quality guidance calls for touch targets of at least 48 dp and says teams should check that targets remain accessible across sizes and configurations. It also recommends a progress indicator or similar cue if startup takes longer than two seconds. These are Android quality checks, not universal legal thresholds for every platform (Android Developers: Core app quality guidelines).
Assess security separately from interface clarity
A clear permission explanation tells users what the app says it does; it does not prove the underlying system is secure. Pair UX review with engineering review of data flows, permission use, network handling, authentication, and vulnerabilities. Match security testing to the sensitivity of the data and the consequences of failure.
NIST SP 800-163 Rev. 1 (2019) describes a mobile application vetting process for assessing whether apps meet an organization’s security requirements and identifying vulnerabilities (NIST SP 800-163 Rev. 1). Treat security claims as claims about assessed controls, not as a result of new colors, privacy copy, or interface polish.

Validate the changes against the original failure
Test realistic versions of the app with the people and tasks implicated by the diagnosis. Check whether users can complete the task, understand relevant data and permission explanations, make and change choices, and recover without losing work. Include accessibility, platform conventions, interruptions, and security implications in the review. Compare the results with the specific problems that led to the redesign; there is no established trust-lift figure that can be applied to an app in general.
The UK Government’s Code of practice for app store operators and app developers, updated 24 October 2023, provides a security and privacy baseline. Its relevance does not settle what legal duties apply to a particular app: check current, jurisdiction- and category-specific requirements.
